Fitting new forks to a Honda CBF1000 - are my rookie skills up to it? 4K
The original forks on my 'new to me' CBF1000 aren't in the best condition so I've managed to source some new original Showa ones - now it's time for this motorbike maintenance rookie to fit them and see if they give any improvement. Will it all prove to be worth it?

Well, in true 'best laid plans...' style, I no longer have my CB1100RS. My intent had always been to pay the balloon at the end of the PCP and keep it. However, savings earmarked for this have had to be used elsewhere and with just 18 months left on the agreement, finding the balloon payment afresh would not be feasible. So, a rethink... I decided to sell the RS and buy another, albeit much che...

    Haggard rider, stick with the cb1100 Honda, it's a fantastic bike and you will be really happy with it, but don't buy a vfr800 it was the most bent up riding position I've ever had on any bike. And a really cold ride no warmth comes from riding it, your knees freeze as the fairing doesn't keep the wind from your knees and not any heat from the motor as it's a water cooled, stick with the cb1100 it's air oil cooled and won't corrode out. I've had my cb1100 for 12years and it is a keeper. Cheers mate andy from Australia

    Hi Haggard, interesting topic as i have an '18 RS also in grey & am considering risers. I'm only 5' 9" (29" leg) so the net change in ergonomics will not be the same. I accept that accessories chosen are down to the individual but i like the top box on my RS but dislike those horrid hand shield things. Thanks for posting

    • @haggardrider6903
      @haggardrider6903 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the bar risers gave more upright position, but I actually preferred the ergos with not risers fitted - you pays yer money..... As for the handguards, like or loathe them, they really did help keep the hands from freezing, even with heated grips.

    How do you find it compared to a 70 Plate EX version Are the riding position very different, RS more forward and EX more relaxed for cruising etc I like the look of both 🏍️🧐

    • @haggardrider6903
      @haggardrider6903 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi @Sale_Shark. The bars on the RS are around 75mm lower than on the EX so a much more sporty position. I think the pegs may be further back too, but don't quote me on that. When the bike first arrived, the bars certainly had a 'clip-on' look to them but I never got bad wrist ache (I broke both wrists as a kid, not really been right since) and certainly no back ache. But, if you want a relaxed ride, go for the EX, if you prefer a more overall sporty bike, the RS is for you.

    Wonderful bike, I have the EX. I find the gearbox can be sensitive to the chain slack, it doesn’t like too much. A properly adjusted, cleaned and lubed chain made a considerable difference to the slickness of my gearbox. Your 4th to 3rd reluctance isn’t normal on this bike, I would make sure your servicing dealer is using the correct grade of oil and that clutch adjustment is within the normal range.

    • @haggardrider6903
      @haggardrider6903 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sale_Shark, the RS has lower bars than the EX and so a slightly more forward lean, but certainly not a sports bike lean, and you can always put on bar risers for more lift and pull-back if you need to. I had no wrist or shoulder pains though. If you call the EX a relaxed riding position, the RS has a more 'attentive' one if you follow. The RS has better suspension, better handling (although still 'lazy') and, to me, feels more planted than an EX which always felt a bit squirrely. Both are good bikes.

    Why change it? 1. It has a metal tank, abs, and no superfluous electronics (you will never have to replace the skyhook/esa/keyless ignition sensor etc) so it won’t be a PITA in five years 2. They are quite rare - didn’t sell a load because most people want 150bhp in a 130kg bike (most bikers would be better off losing 20kg of dead weight off their stomach and then they could buy a heavier bike…but hey) 3. Love mine. Exact same as yours. 3k miles (ish) in. Not noticed any of the issues you mention on mine… Don’t know if you’ve noticed - but one of the differences on these compared to previous gen RS seem to the small adjustment wheel on top of the gas cylinders on the rear shocks - can’t find any reference to these in the manuals? Do you think they actually do anything? Can’t get air cooled in-line 4’s anymore- it’s a keeper in my view.

    • @haggardrider6903
      @haggardrider6903 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm suspecting the 4th to 3rd'issue'may be more to do with me than the bike. The adjuster on the gas cyinder is for, supposedly, compression damping - I say supposedly as I've not messed with the suspension at all so cannot confirm either way! It's P92 in the RS owner's manual.

      @@haggardrider6903 Thank you - I've been looking at a CB1100RS manual on-line..not my actual book. My rear compression damping settings are 'off' from the standard (one was at position 4, one was at 2 actually). I hadn't noticed the rear also has rebound damping - I shall be experimenting! (check-out MotoJitsu's rebound damping / suspension video). Non adjustable suspension was a big criticism of the previous model. Front forks have this duel bending valve system (SDBV)..preload adjustable only as per the original CB1100RS.

    I've done over 2000 miles on my 69 plate CB1100RS and seem to be appreciating it more and more as the miles go by - great exhaust note, fast enough, handles well, and I actually like the weight as it helps the bike sit firmly on the road, pushing it around the garage can be a struggle though. I swapped from a katana, good bike but now my arms are longer as it just wanted to be off. So I looked around and being a Honda fan I picked like yours. The only other bike I would consider would be the 1400 gsx . I had one and regret selling it. Very similar bike , old school , powerful and looks fantastic in the white and blue. So keeping the Honda would be my advise, it's a Honda it's smooth , fast enough, cheap to own, great looking and won't age . I mean, just sit having a drink and look at it, fantastic hunk of metal that is ultimately a well made bullet proof bike cream of the crop. Keep safe buddy.

      Yup, lived there from age 5 to when I got married at 23, left the area, then back to Castlecroft and Wombourne before finally leaving in '99. Remember the Bridgnorth Road before the speed limits. From the Crypt to the Sabrina Cafe! Fun times

    Had one of these for 3 or 4 weeks now. Love it I know the speed at 4 thousand revs in top 😀. Nice riding though and a bit beyond my capabilities at the moment

      Yes, quick enough at 4k rpm aren't they! It's certainly a bike you can grow into easily and get used to it's capabilities.

    Hi, I’ve got a triumph Daytona which I have owned for the last six years and 28,000 miles! Was thinking of retiring on a 950 cruiser or going back to my roots. After passing my test in the 80s I bought a 750 four and lived,which way would you go? It makes my teeth itch 🪃

      Hi Paul, the CB, either the RS or the 'softer' EX could be a good choice if you're ok with the weight (which goes when you're riding anyway). Ample enough power, surprisingly rapid when you want it to be with max torque delivered at only 5500rpm. Admittedly not much below that so at times you need to prepare for your overtakes. Having had a CB1100 D before, I like the RS with it's better suspension, lower, slightly clip-on looking bars and bigger tyres. Whatever you decide and get, enjoy the ride - and stick around!

      Many years ago it was a CB175 and a Beezer C15, then a break from bikes for 40 years when, on a whim, I got a GSX650F, a Z650 a then a CB650F, a 2013 CB1100D and now the RS - which is definitely the best bike but some wonderful memories of the C15

    Wow I’m genuinely surprised at you’re figures and findings. I was barely getting 140 miles to a tank. I found the seat agony after 30 minutes. The leg comfort was was ok if I didn’t ride on the balls of my feet. I’m similar size to you by the way. The forward lean was actually comfortable for long journeys and higher speed sections. I’d be really interested to know if you find the bike really reluctant to turn in and if you found the gear ratios strange. They are beautiful bikes and so well made glad you got on with yours much better than I did. 👍

      There's not much opportunity for enthusiastic riding around here - way too busy, so that may account for the range difference? But, genuinley, I'm getting mid 50's mpg constantly. Yes, before I lost my 5st, I found the seat agony after 30mins like you, after my weight loss, I do now find it 'acceptable for 90 mins or so. As you say, it is a bit 'lazy' (even more so now I'm 5st lighter!) to turn in and certainly needs encouragement, a sports bike it will never be! Not found an issue with the gearing, certainly not for my style of riding, so long as you use the power band - you need to get into the right gear for overtaking, get it to 4k rpm and it'll certainly shift. Below that, not so much, it's not a twin for sure!

      @@haggardrider6903 Well done on the weight loss, great effort. Probably a tactic I should follow. I moved on to a 2015 CB1100ex which had a bigger tank and much more relaxed riding position. With its high bars for leverage and skinny tyres it was very agile and handled very well actually. Yeh the top gears on the RS felt like overdrives to me but could have been asking too much from the bike and probably could have given it more time to adapt. Thanks for the reply. Keep enjoying the bike.

    Lovely part of the country - well done for riding through winter, I presume you've protected the bike with ACF50 or similar? I must admit that when there's salt on the roads I avoid riding mine. I'm with you on the flexibility of the engine (and the weight issue!) I also love the exhaust note and the retro styling, a seriously underrated bike in my opinion.

      Thank you John. Yes, I use XCP, and also rinse off the bike off with a hose/jet wash if it has been a wet ride. Love the smell of a hot bike in the garage!!

    Interesting - I also have an RS and the only think I've changed is the seat (swapped for a Corbin seat - ugly but comfortable) :-) I'm a litttle alrger than average, so for me the legs are a little cramped (33" inside leg) but not bad by any means.

    • @haggardrider6903
      @haggardrider6903 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went the cheaper way of losing weight so now the seat is a bit more comfortable for a little bit longer. On a previous, standard CB1100, I bought a comfort seat from Samurider in Japan - very expensive but very comfortable, looked like the original K1 seat.

      Hi Stanley, sorry for the delay in responding!! Managed to get out yesterday for a decent ride - boy, have I missed the RS!! Yes, I am absolutely still enjoying it. I've done just shy of 4000 miles as of today, first annual service will be in May at standard Honda rates. Servicing is annual on my mileage, the first service cost £169. Mileage rate is currently 57mpg over the 4000 miles.
