The question of transcendence has also come up in unexpected ways. More and more people involved in AI, such as philosopher Nick Bostrom, are taking seriously the idea that we might be living within an AI simulation, like in the film The Matrix. Speculation about the Simulation has brought up the possibility of a higher intelligence that could create worlds and create our world. It has forced people to consider the idea that this material world is not the ultimate reality, and that there might be a level of reality above or beyond it, on which it depends for its existence. The question of God and a creative, transcendent intelligence is coming alive in a new way because of the questions raised by AI.

    I find it interesting that when one becomes a Carthusian, they give up their name and identity and are even buried without any marking. Yet somehow Bruno is mentioned in every video and conversation about Carthusians, so is he allowed to be remembered and only him. Even though there were seven at the start. It seems a bit inconsistent this.

    My thought is that the universe is a figment of God’s imagination and unlike the author of a book, He can and did step into it. AI, because it is of this world, it can never reach the level of God’s intellect. At best, it could self-destruct in its attempt to reach beyond the confines of this universe.

    The immortality question is the wrong one. It’s not so much a question of whether one would want to live forever; it’s a question of do you want to eventually get old and experience the associated inevitable decline. Needless to say no one would voluntarily choose any degenerative and fatal disease and that is what we seek to overcome through future healthcare. However its not just about disease prevention, it’s about maintaining youthfulness and optimising how we function which for some people may be simple things like eliminating allergic type reactions which can severely limit quality of life even if one is youthful and free of disease. Mental health and happiness is also extremely important and finding ways to augment our minds either through AI, engineered biomes, gene therapies or any other safe means would make living radically longer something that is welcome as opposed to a major burden which is how some people might frame it. With all round better mental and physical health people would be more inclined to not wanting to die. This is my take on it for now.

    I want to be with Jesus.; the one who called me into being so that I may be one with Him forever. Sharing in Jesus eternal life. Sharing in the eternal life of the one who made all things and for whom all things were made. I don't want to be separated from Jesus in my full consciousness of self any longer than necessary.

    4:13 "Some of the pessimists Catastrophize about what's called the Singularity, the possibility that an artificial superintelligence could ... wipe out the human race". That's not exactly what the term "singularity" means. A technological singularity just means that self-improvement exponentially builds on itself so quickly that humans are incapable of predicting what will happen after the singularity. I'd say most believers in techno-singularity are AI-optimists, particularly one of the foremost proponents of the concept, Ray Kurzweil, who wrote "The Singularity is Near".

    An excellent useful summary of the range of views of specialists. I liked the lion cub analogy very much. I hope you don't mind a couple of observations. 1) I think your viewers would benefit from definitions of AGI and ASI. AGI is around the level of human intelligence, ASI is clearly beyond. 2) You're using 'singularity' in a non-standard way. It's normally used to mean when the progress curve steepens so much that it is reaching into unimaginable territory (ASI). This is argued to be plausible if/when AI self-improvement really gets traction. Of course there would be plenty of risk around that, but 'singularity' in this context isn't used to denote the moment when possible existential risk becomes actual which is generally thought to be much earlier. Many x-risks only needs AGI because of the advantages that AI has over human intelligence (e.g. tireless, massively better comms). 3) The belief in near AGI partly comes from the expectation that Moore's Law will continue to operate, but also the hunch that 'observed scaling laws' which show that increasing hardware/compute/data leads to improved intelligence will continue to hold for some time before a plateau is reached. For myself I guess I'm in your believer category (AGI by the end of this decade not implausible, and I'd bet against having to wait until the end of the decade following), and with strong pessimistic sympathies. My top concerns are not among those you list, I'm concerned that it will transform the nature of our individual and societal experiences more than anyone asked for. None of this I'm sure about, but I fear that we'll pull apart as we talk to AI more and each other less and as shared culture gives way to bespoke content created on individual demand, and I fear that we'll go mad (I don't have a better word) due to the loss of purpose and status when much of human endeavour ranks as mediocre quality. But very few would choose to return to pre-fire, and hopefully this will pan out to the same conclusion, because it surely won't be halted.

    • @davidanderson5310
      @davidanderson5310 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "I'm concerned that it will transform the nature of our ... experiences more than anyone asked for". This is also my top concern about AI. My own analogy is that AI will be to us like reading & writing was to Socrates: an end to his way of life, where "really" understanding something meant memorizing and knowing it deeply using only your own brain. In the future, when AI does most of our thinking for us, I hope that humans will continue to exist and find some sort of meaning in life.
