Return loop for N scale
มุมมอง 1542 หลายเดือนก่อน
I get the return loop wired and running, using a diode matrix system to control the turnouts and a rectifier to make sure the loco only goes in one direction, even when the polarity is reversed. This allows for the direction to be changed on the controller, without changing the direction of the locomotive while it is in the return loop.

    This penalty be a case of winding an armature for a tree, for your layout?

    • @Waterkloofmr
      @Waterkloofmr 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not a sadist! Trying to get the breakdown train around the layout is difficult enough while there are 5 other operators busy.

  • @Amayii
    @Amayii 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It's a fun idea to make a train operator run a penalty lap for running a red sign or causing a derailment. What other rules do you have and use while operating a train? When I was a teenager in the early 2000s I would love to role play driving the train as realistically as possible and coming up with different loads and things that would happen along the way on-board of my passenger cars. I always wished I could put a camera in the front, or in a passenger cabin while looking out of the window. Especially during night runs and I lit up the whole town with lights inside the houses and improvised streetlights with LEDs I glued and soldered onto ice cream sticks. Have you ever considered getting a modern mini action camera like the Insta360 GO? It can provide both a live stabilized image and record in high definition at the same time. You could even use FPV Goggles. It's probably a bit big to hide it on a locomotive without using special fiber optics so it's probably best hidden in a Caboose or freight -like car.

      Thank you, I am saving to buy a 60 fps camera, but the go pro models are a little too big to go through the tunnels and hidden cilmbs on my layout. I recall having a cab ride on the Apple Expresz when one of my school friends was working as the fireman on the 2Ft gauge railway.

    Lionel introduced their first HO scale ALCo FA in 1959. It went through a number of design changes and liveries over the years, before Lionel gave up on their HO line in 1966. In the 70s, now under General Mills' MPC division, Lionel tried offering HO trains again- the ALCo FA returned with a new drive system, slightly retooled shell, and both some new and old liveries. The mechanism was good initially but later cheapened with a pancake style mechanism, and ultimately Lionel abandoned HO again after 1978. In 1989 it briefly returned to house the Lionel Railscope. This model, the 0555, was offered in sets (but not seperately) from 1963 to 1965. The mechanism in yours, Lionel called "helic drive"- it was introduced with their 1963 diesels, and kept until sometime in 1964 or 1965 when they went to a crown gear drive instead. Prior to the helic drive, Lionel used rubber O rings, and instead of traction tires they had both trucks be powered. The rubber O ring drives mostly run very smoothly and quietly, but changing the belts is a pain. Lionel HO is pretty interesting, but it can be difficult to work with because most of the parts are no longer available, or only available at steep prices. Also awkward is that Lionel's HO couplers use non-standard pivots, and the shanks are set lower than a normal horn-hook coupler. I usually work around broken couplers by splicing replacement coupler heads onto the original shanks, but it's a lot of work to go through.

    • @Waterkloofmr
      @Waterkloofmr 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you so much for this information. I used a kadee "ring" that comes with some of their couplers to make the hole for the pin small enough for the Lionel coupler mounting pin, and used a normal horn hook coupler.

    • @leverettrailfan5414
      @leverettrailfan5414 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Waterkloofmr if you used a normal horn hook, the coupler height is probably a little low, but generally that's only a problem if you keep the trip pin (since it'll snag on switches and stuff if it's too low). Sometimes it can cause issues with couplers not wanting to mate or stay mated because the heights don't match. There is a person on eBay who sells replica couplers, but they're prohibitively expensive- a set of 12 is around 40 USD. Imho, getting creative with parts you have on hand is a much better deal than that!

    Thanks so much for sharing. Did you kit bash the Lima coaches to make the combi coach? Which (Kadee?) couplers did you use for the passenger cars and are they body or boge mounted? The 16A looks beautiful - did you use a Mehana chassis for it? Your layout looks great and I really enjoy your "sky" based backgrounds too. Hoping that you don't experience too many more blackouts when running the trains.

    • @Waterkloofmr
      @Waterkloofmr ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Herriot7, yes, the combine is a kitbash, cutting a lima Trans Karoo and baggage car in half and rejoining them. I use a combination of nr 5 or nr 4 kadees. (will give you an indication of how old my passenger stock is) All couplers are body mounted, bogie mounted is looking for derailments and with long sections of hidden track and other sections that are difficult to reach, I stay away from bogie mounted couplers. Yes, I used a Mehano chasis for the 16DA, currently working on a 16E but it is on a Lima 4-6-2 chassis. The Lima motor has however received a service where all flash are cleaned from the gears, the motor is oiled and the brush tension is adjusted for best performance. Thank you for the compliments, the backdrops are printed by a company, Fatboy and Co, here is Pietermaritzburg, South Africa Regards Henry van Wyk
