Also, can I do it in a plant that is only 1 year old? It looks tall and thick enough to hold the bags with soil, but the plant is only one year. Thanks!

I used to work in Singapore, staying at 113 Depot Road, used to walk through a house on the road. Depot Road to go to work at Boat Quay. I think your system makes the natural way of growing bamboo more complicated, one, you distroy the major trunk, secondly, when you cut the braches you need to wait more time inorder to grow new braches before you put your cocopit, why if you directly put cocopit without harming the bamboo? The bamboo is easily growing plant you do not need to apply any chemicals or any kinds of artificial aid.
