I only have one Scottish ancestor to my knowledge and she wasn't a convict as far as I can tell. Her husband was though and considering the 24 year age gap and their marriage when she was just 17 I'm guessing Henry was a worker on their farm in Central West NSW. Otherwise I'm not sure how he got the blessing to marry their daughter. They eventually had 8 children despite the age difference. Henry died at 61 in 1860 and Mary died of apoplexy at 46 in 1869

My great uncle, Joseph Benedetto Cachia, leading steward E/LX 20812 from Malta died on that ship on that tragic night. He was 36 years old and is listed as MPK (Missing Presumed Killed) in the official records. He was not supposed to be on shift that night but had swapped his shift so that his colleague could go on a date. There were several other Maltese seamen and servicemen who died on the HMS Royal Oak as well. God grant Eternal Rest to all those who died on that ship on that night and all those who died at sea during the war.

The torpedo doesn't penetrate. It actually goes under the keel of the target and detonates there. This causes great stress on the keel and can inflict massive damage if aimed at the right spot. In order for this to happen, the U Boat sets the depth of the torpedo 1 or 2 meters below the draft of the target. The reason the magnetic torpedoes didn't work was because the magnetic detonator did not function properly. The torpedoes would pass under the boat and the sensor designed to recognize when the torpedo was under the boat malfunctioned, resulting in the torpedo passing through to the other side and continuing. This is likely what happened with Prien's torpedoes.
