Down climbing the fixed lines - top of Stiver's Gully, Bold Mountain, Eklutna

A class 4 scramble area with some pretty big consequences if you make even a small mistake. I was honestly scared. The horrendous condition of the extremely frayed fixed lines made me a bit nervous. A cliff to the right, hundreds of feet straight down into a neighboring gully, and a long roll with even more hundreds of feet of fall to the left definitely had my attention. This is what I felt wa...

It was impossible not to feel your joy and excitement. At the end of sept I hiked from flagstaff to the canyon. Camped at bright angle campground then went back up. Never got to the north side. Then hiked back to flagstaff. Going back in 25 to see more of the canyon and flagstaff area. Great job👏👏🥂🥳
Jaw dropping!
@@thedoorider I agree!!
Awesome video! I love your energy and enthusiasm. Well done! Congratulations 🎉, you nailed it!
@@Pwag20 so glad you enjoyed it!!
I live close to the Canyon. I always tell first time visitors to skip Bright Angel and go on SK to Oohahh Point. My favorite view.
It worked out so well with the BA side being closed to the river. I got to see OohAhh and camp in Cremation Canyon!
Ur stunning
@@Iwanttolivemydreamlife so sweet of you. That sunrise tho 😍
THE most genuine, well prepared, well packed, well trained, and well executed trek through the Canyon, on TH-cam. This is how it's done! Thanks for taking us along!! Absolutely epic adventure.
WOW! Now that's a huge compliment! Thank you so much!
❤❤❤
@@indiangirltravelstheworld V!!!!!! Next year around Thanksgiving I’m planning a group trip. You better pencil it in! Love you 🥰
@rebeccatherestless yaaasss! love you more .. I rewinded the last scene so many times seeing your stoked n happiness of finishing the hike. Love ya n miss ya!

You're a rockstar! I enjoyed the heck out of your series of vids. Fantastic job mastering the Canyon and kinda awesome to see a fellow Alaskan there (although I don't live there any more, but my family does have a cove at Big Lake named after us). Thanks for all the video you shot and put together! I started backpacking there in 2007, going back yearly, and then switched to running there in 2015, and return each year in late May and mid-Aug. to run and shoot videos.
I am hooked! I will definitely be back yearly!
@@rebeccatherestless The Canyon sings a Siren's song, so yep, you'll go back. lol And don't worry about never having that "first time" experience again. There's something about the Canyon and being down inside, combined with every time you go back, you'll dial in your training, gear and how you do it, more and more, and try different times of year (avoid June/July), so it becomes a bit of an addiction. You're a hard charger, and you did incredibly well, as if you've been there a dozen times. And rocking a 65lb pack going down the S. Kaibab!!! RIP to those monster quads! lol
@@austinado16 I can't wait to go back! And yes, my quads and calves are beefy! Built like a pack mule, not a trail runner for sure LOL! I had someone criticize me on FB for taking so many days, but it was the perfect amount of time to really enjoy the space. (that guy got blocked pretty quick LOL!) There's no way this Alaskan is going to go during the summer. I picked the perfect time and am already planning to go back for Thanksgiving again next year!
@@rebeccatherestless Your adventure in the Canyon was yours to take, no one else's. There's umpteen ways to enjoy being down in, and I think yours was pretty epic, especially with the little side trip out on the Tonto with no water source (requiring extra weight to be carried). You got the complete experience, and just as important, you did it like a pro who's been there quite a few times. You did it solo, and you had the fitness to just hammer out every day, even when wrecked in the last mile or 2. Seriously impressive. If you go in May, the Canyon is all green and sort of lush, and temps at the bottom are still pretty nice. If you go in the Fall, like late Sept/early Oct. the North Rim has Aspen trees that turn orange and yellow.
@ ohhhh! May sounds nice. My work season is from April to November but if I ever get a late start then it’s definitely game on for May! Thank you so much for all of your compliments! It means a lot coming from someone with experience 😃
Love all the scenic views. The mules going down and on the bridge... neat.
The 48 minutes was pared down from about 6 and half hours of film LOL! Something new around every corner!
Very entertaining!! Thanks
@@gregwhelan5708 thanks for watching!
YEZZZZ! Love the excitement you emit. Enjoy.
It was a fun trip! I had a blast!
How does such a fat driver ride on a narrow track? not enough consideration to buy a WT or a SWT?
There’s a first. Never heard of sno bungee, what frocking awesome idea.
Is that your Cains Quest 850?
Yes! This is Scott's gopro footage. I'm riding ahead of him on the 850
@rebeccacharles9380 nice she's still goin
Vous êtes pas des peureux
Is this by rohn?
Yes.
Quit one tracking! Your pussy riders ! Non of you got any adventure in you ! Quit following the track In front of you ! Make a choice then be different!
Love it! Great riding and beautiful scenery.
Awesome job ladies
Loved hearing you laughing at the beginning! So much fun!
You’re a badass
Rebecca. Greetings from Chukotka, Russia. This is a terrible thing. Where is the snow? Is the prize in this race worth the trouble for a snowmobile?
This is in a "snow shadow" on the north side of the Alaska Range. Often there is little to no snow there. It's totally worth it for the adventure!
How much do riders pay to participate? Do the organizers help them fix the equipment? Or are they all taking part in a race to survive? And how much do the winners get paid for winning places?
My favorite Caïns vidéo thanks 👑👑🏆🥇🥈🥉
I love the sound of that 850 etc
That day was the most memorable climb of my life! That was so much fun camping on the East Fork in Eklutna. Thank you!
I guess I have to give it another go next year. I can't believe I didn't go the last 600 feet 🤦♀️
Rebecca Charles It was better safe than sorry. Especially, when there’s the potential of rain. Going down the grass ramp would have sucked. I want to do again!
Was here twice, absolutely beautiful trail
Thanks for helping my cousin's out!! You ladies are bad ass!! Congratulations on an awesome race, hope to see you two in 2022 :)
Wish I could have made it up into the mealies this winter, but breaking the motor in my old summit makes it a bit difficult, amazing too see though!
Nice! Really interesting to see the places. Hopefully youll keep posting more these clips!
I wish I had more footage than just these 2 videos 🤷♀️ Time for mountain climbing videos until next winter 😁
What are you riding sounds like a 600 ? I've never seen anyone successfully pull a sled out backwards .Great video !
850. Normally wouldn't go backwards, but he was wedged into the ice shelf
Been following this race for 10 years and the helmet cam footage is non existent, thanks for posting. Hope to see some more.
It's pretty much non existent for a reason 😁 this was the only footage I got before getting rid of the camera. Too much distraction 🤦♀️🤷♀️
I take that back. I have one more video uploaded here from riding after this rescue. Check it out!
@@rebeccatherestless I found it, great footage. I assumed that was what happened usually...no time to mess with the cameras.
Thank for sharing
Darn stucks are contagious
Isn't that the truth... I got sucked off the trail not even a quarter mile up and the boys helped pull me out 🤷♀️
What do you like better polaris or Brp, you have lots of seat time on brp by now 😉
Wow Alaska is so beautiful, I'm from labrador city and have been following you and Careen on cains quest I saw you have a gopro on you must have some cool footage, awesome job you guys 👏
They should race someplace where there’s snow. Almost every time I watch one of these races it looks like a dirt bike would be better suited to the conditions. 😀
That's just that area. Do some research on mountain range snow shadows. This is the tallest range in north America.
We had some really crappy climate change winters in AK. Recently in the past 2 years we have had winters that are more similar to normal. Who knows how long the current trend will last? I hope it does but I don't have much confidence.
@@thatalaskaguy holding pretty well so far!
@@erickfish1400 it seems like Fairbanks is getting all of our snow. Right now this is the worst winter we’ve had since ‘95-‘96. We have around 2’ of snow on the ground in some places but the wind blew most of it away. The snow we do have has no base and is very thin in most areas. Complete garbage conditions. Even fatbiking is no fun with the constant wind and signal digit to below zero temps. We’ve had 4 good winters since 2010. Not a great record.
@@thatalaskaguy damn sorry man. Only January and quite a few folks are over it already. Can't imagine this being anyone's first winter anywhere in Alaska. I hope it improves for you, at least the wind could quit maybe.
What make and model sled? Nice video.
That year was a 2015 Polaris Adventure. Moved on to an XCR in 2018. Reduced the number of pre race mods I had to do.
Who got stuck
One of us. Not me that time 😉🤣
Wow, that was a whole. Luck no one was seriously hurt
Great video Rebecca. I believe that is me in front of you. Would this be before or after that tree jumped out on the trail and got me!
It is you!
That tree was bold to jump out like that!
These views though! Wow!
I'm always in awe of the views. I spent 50 minutes out of the total climb just taking pictures and videos 😂 (per the analytics of my tracking app, Relive)
where there isn't any snow , is it always like this or does it vary from year to year?
It's just about always like that.
thank you
Let me elaborate. The snowless area called "The Burn" is north of the very tall Alaska Range. Weather comes from the south and gets blocked by the tall mountains creating a "snow shadow" where very little snow falls. Hope this explains it!
How did you keep your sled from overheating on the bare trail?
Theres little bits of snow that the studs kick up into the heat exchanger, but honestly, these Polaris sleds handle the lack of snow very well and rarely see excessively high temps, even in the burn.
Nice work girl! Thanks for the fantastic vid!!
