Thank you for the LIKE Tip of how to land a big fish with tenkara rod - Steps: 1. Keep the line tight instead of fighting with fish. Wait until it is calming down 2. Guide the fish to shallow water with the line tight. gentle pressure. 3. Always grab the tippet first before netting the fish

This video is outstanding. thank you
Thats pole is amazing wow the flex
Too many chiefs
Thank you
This is an amazing video. Thanks for sharing it and thanks to Robert!
Wow Im glad I seen this ! ! !
I gotta tell ya, this video, especially the part about 'tucking the butt' when they run, has already saved me a few fish. I have been Tenkara fishing for a few years now, I understood how and when to steer the fish(side to side with a big fish), now I am armed with the knowledge of how to save a running(directly away from me) fish. Thank you very much. Nothing worse than having a hole in your skill set or waders!
I use a dragontail 12 ft rod and a 15ft keiryu rod and I usually nymph or use either size 12 kebari or 14-16 dry fly elk hair caddis. 4x for the heavier flys and 5x for the lighter ones. I have noticed I get a lot of action with a sasoi method then I ever do casting upstream. Any thoughts on this
SO GO CATCH A BIG TROUT AND SHOW US INSTEAD OF TALKING ❓❓❓👎😡.....BLAH BLAH BLAH
You’re not even gunna show catching any fish?
Why are we calling this tenkara? Mericans been fly fishing like this with cane poles for centuries. Maybe rich fly fishermen dont feel safe in the DEEP South.
Wow, I feel very lucky to have come across this video before I started Tenkara fishing lol
The best explanation of how the rod works during the fight. Is there a continuation? video abruptly ended
Heeeeeeey, I'm your 1000th subscriber. Good luck to your channel.
Nice catch
Outstanding demonstration. I was not aware of the power curve but now i will use this to my advantage. Thanks so much.
Hello. Tell me what kind of fishing rod (name and length). Thank you for the video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
check out TenkaraTanuki.com
Excellent video. You've inspired me to drive up the Highway 395 and I'm leaving this weekend for an extended fishing vacation. I have two technical qualms with this video though. 1) "The eastern Sierra is no trees" There are a lot less trees than the western Sierra, but there are still plenty of forests. If you drive a few minutes west from Bishop or Mammoth you'll see. Are you sure that you're still in the Sierra Nevada? The Sierras don't extend all the way to the Nevada border except in the regions very close to Lake Tahoe. For example, Bridgeport is not in the Sierras, it's in a high-elevation valley between the Sierras and the Bodie Hills, and formally it's in the Basin and Range Province. There are a lot less trees there due to the rain shadow effect of the Sierras. Lahontan cutthroat trout (LCT) are from the Lahontan Basin and the eastern Sierras are only the very western edge of their native range. 2) Regarding "protected fish so catch-and-release only period": The LCT is a protected species, but under the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) it's listed as Threatened not Endangered, so the feds have some leeway how they manage the species' populations. For the three cutthroat trout subspecies listed in the ESA (Lahontan, Paiute, and greenback) the feds have turned over responsibility for the management to the states and anglers are allowed to catch and keep the trout if state law allows it. California has its own ESA and there are no cutthroat trout listed on it, so the law generally treats them the same as rainbow trout. The biggest problem with preserving the LCT (and there are many problems) is that they can breed with rainbow trout (RT). The hybrid offspring are called cutbows and sometimes the cutbows are fertile so this messes up the LCT gene lines in areas where LCTs and rainbow trout exist together. There are RT in both the Carson River and the Walker River and in all tributaries that they can reach, very likely including the filming location(s) in this video. That's why catch-and-keep is legal -- because the LCT could very well be a LCT/RT hybrid and it's difficult for anyone except a professional ichthyologist to tell the difference. California protects the LCT by protecting the pure strains in actively-managed sections of river/creek upstream from fish barriers. If you look at the freshwater fishing regulations you'll see that By-Day Creek (tributary of the East Walker River) and all tributaries, and the Carson River, East Fork and all tributaries above Carson Falls are totally closed to fishing year-round. It's because there are pure strains of LCTs living tnere and there's no way for rainbow trout to swim there because they're blocked by fish barriers. Those two examples are just off the top of my head, there are at least a dozen more like that. Most of them were stocked there from trout in Independence Lake. So if you're fishing in the Carson River or in the Walker River watersheds in a place where it's legal to fish then just follow the regulations and you'll be fine. If you catch-and-keep-and-eat a cutbow trout then you're not harming the LCT as a Threatened species.
It’s a big thing finishing with Tenkara rods where I’m from mostly used for sea mullet coming into fresh river water any advice on a 6m pole that is light weight to be held with one hand and strong enough to pull of 1kg fish
Any rod above 5 m recommended two hands because the inertia is too large.
Great video! I fly fish the Merced river a lot and now I’m considering tenkara
I wanted to thank you so so much again for the info on the power curve. I caught a 16 in bass today on my Aventik Nano 9 ft rod today using your training. It works perfectly!!!
SHUT UP AND LET THE MAN TALK
Just use a fly rod lmao
Unfortunately, everything I learned about landing a big fish with a fly rod is totally the opposite of natural physics. In other words, it was wrong and exhausted the fish, breaking the rod...
Wow! I learned a ton from this. Very helpful for someone new to tenkara, and not really experienced with fishing in general.
This is some of the best tenkara coaching I've ever seen.
Never thought about steering the fish like that👍
The power curve is no joke!! I inadvertently had a 12 ft alligator on the end of my line after it went after the little bass I had just caught. I remembered the concepts from this video still thinking, "No way, this rod is going to fly apart in just a few seconds". Twenty seconds later with my rod in that perfect power curve C, I finally got my line out of his mouth with my hook and tippet still attached!!! And the rod was still in perfect shape. Power curve works!! Side note, he was caught on an Aventik 9 ft Nano...

Excellent
Own the zone versus match the hatch! Love it!
Thank you from a newb. Replacing my broken tip from grabbing the line on my first Tenkara fish. Got too excited and rushed him in. Crack. So sad. Good news is it cost $15 to get new tips. Got an extra for good measure.
Yesterday are very pretty those Lahanton
Just got my first Tenkara rod and waiting for the level lines, tippet etc. This, has been so, so informative. Thanks. Looking forward to getting out and dialling my casts ready for the season to start!
Great advice can't wait to try your tips thanks for sharing your advice!!
Seems pretty much like what I've been doing with a western fly rod and reel and double taper line--up and down stream curves, J-cast, wiggle cast, dump cast. Something like the Spey or Belgian cast, perhaps? Sounds easier to get a unobtrusive and accurate presentation, though, and easier with the long rods to avoid drag! Come Spring I will be trying this out! I've been moving towards simplification and less gear, anyway--and this looks like it!
It is very similar. The only difference is the line. Rob uses the level 10lb test; the line is off the water. The hard part is controlling the depth of the fly.
I just watched a petite and short lady catch a big-sized fish on TikTok. In the comments, someone mentioned the rod being a Tenkara. But I didn’t understand how she caught the fish w/out reeling it in. Can you help me understand?
first, the reel doesn't catch fish. Most effective way in catching with a fly rod s a short line fishing like Euro-mymphing or using tenkara rod. Both method with or without a reel still out fish with a long line fishing. Tenkara rod is more effective in catching than fishing with a reel rod. Fish are every where. A fly fishing rod with a reel is a distraction from fishing.
@@TanukiFishing I guess you'd have to see the video to understand what I'm talking about. I still don't get it. But thank you anyway for replying. I do appreciate it. :)
@@Merrytonic Tenkara rods use a "fixed line" attached (tied) to the tip of the rod. If you watch some of the above video again, I think you might notice it this time round. Typically this is a special tenkara-specific braided line somewhere between 7ft and 20ft long depending on the rod length and the particular fishing situation; it's generally a little longer than the rod itself. To this line a length of tippet (usually thin, clear monofilament) is attached and to this tippet the fly is tied. Once the fish is hooked, the angler draws the rod up from a position leaning away toward the fish to a vertical position (the rod now has a good bend in it). This eventually brings the line and fish toward the angler as the fish tires during the fight. At this point, the angler will usually reach for a net to land the fish (which has the effect of lengthening the angler's arm by a foot or two or more). An angler can also hand the line (grab it) instead of using a net, but it can be risky because most people are not very well able to cushion a late run by a large fish, which can result in a broken tippet or knot failure at the fly. Sometimes, since the line is a little longer than the rod and because the rod is bent, effectively making it shorter still, the angler will actually hold the rod behind them by extending the arm, which can bring the fish closer to be netted. Smaller fish rarely need to be netted (wet your hands prior to handling the fish to protect it's slimy coating which prevents bacterial infections in the fish among other things) and can be easily hand lined and released (mostly) unharmed. In rare cases, an angler hooks a real lunker and gets help from a mate to nets the fish or literally backs out of the water to beach the fish on land instead of risking a tricky netting. Hope this helps.
Thank you very much for making the above video. I found it very helpful, practical and efficient…Karl.
This was super helpful!!
My buddy told me about these rods over the weekend I'm extremely curious about this! I'm curious what Rod you would select to get into Tanuki/Tenkara fishing for Pyramid Lake, NV?
I wish this video was better so I could comprehend some of these techniques more. Looks like it was a series of still pictures lol.
Thank you.
Incredible!
That is truly different and interesting!
This is straight-up brilliance. Much appreciated!
Great video. Literally went out the next morning after watching this and hook up onto a 2 ft brown trout. Can you supply a link to the academic study of the Carmen gate?

Finally found a video that explains casting the way I needed to hear it! Every other video was 12-10 or 12-2. Which wasn’t very helpful. Thanks!
