    I loved this movie a while ago. I’ve slowly realised how much better queer representation there could be. With rent too. I think my queer, musical-loving preteen self just liked these movies bc I didn’t know any better. Love thy neighbour was the best part of the movie.

    The one good part about this movie is Andrew Rannells' "Love Thy Neighbor". That's it. That's the good part.

    Oh, come on, this movie is not that bad. Here's the list of details in the movie I saw. 1) Nick Boomer (Nico Greetham): As I first watched the movie, I saw Greetham who played the role of Nick Boomer. I mean, it's much to the surprise to all Power Ranger fans like me. 2) Kevin Shield (Nathaniel J. Potvin): Potvin, who was also in this film. I mean, he did pretty well on Disney XD's MECH-X4. But, I should've finished watching the final episode of that. 3) Sheldon Saperstien (Kevin Chamberlin): Okay, okay, so I know that Kevin Chamberlin was in this film. I always remembered him as Bertham from Disney Channel's Jessie.

    Trevor Noah once said "by saying only gay and Trans people can play gay and Trans characters, you are forcing to out people who might not be ready to be out"- I agree. The movie was a bit messy, and long, but somehow, the good parts moved me still.

    Love how ALYSSA'S MOM is on the poster (even though she's super homophobic and controlling), and she's shown being friendly with the people she was awful too in the show, but neither?? of the "main" characters?? are on the poster??

    I didn't know that James Corbin was straight. That said, they probably hired him because he's the guy you hire for movie musicals.

    I REALLY hated this film, mostly because, well, like you said, not only is the structure GOD AWFUL and all over the place, but the messages, tone, and symbolism are all lost! I'm not a member of the LGBTQ+ Community but i felt equally as insulted because it's a really important thing in modern society and this does probably the worst job representing that. The characters feel really weak. Some given not enough screen-time, some given TOO much screen-time. I specifically hate James Corden in this, because his character adds pretty much nothing and is useless to the plot. He can't act or give a realistic, genuine performance that doesn't either feel forced or under-played. We desperately need a film that touches on this subject in the 21st Century and the fact it's taken us this long is just insulting and ridiculous.

      Does Emma still force her partner to come out?

    Great video, I actually liked the redemption arcs and did not see the issue with it until you pointed it out. I'm biased though because I'm a sucker for angst with happy ending and I love when family are reunited. Thank you for pointing out how it's a lbgtq movie for straight people, I'll be mindful of that when watching lgbt+ movies frow now one. I don't know if it was done on purpose but I did not care much about the actual romance because Emma seemed blend and had no chemistry with Alyssa. I was also more invested in Alyssa, her mother and their relationship dynamics because she mentioned it was partly because of her father being absent. And I love Kerry Washington. Watching your video maybe it was intentional.

      Glad you enjoyed it! I agree with the relationship though, Emma and Alyssa didn't have much chemistry on screen. I also think Alyssa and her mom had an interesting relationship and I would've loved to see it explored more. Thanks for watching :)

    Honestly I'm not sure I want to watch this movie. That clip of Andrew Rannells singing Love thy neighbor that Netflix uploaded is amazing. That's enough for me.

      That was a pretty fun scene! I'd recommend giving it a watch if you're curious, it just wasn't personally my thing

    Hi! Someone who had the INCREDIBLE privilege of seeing The Prom on Broadway with the full original cast back in 2019. The movie could have fixed some of the og productions flaws (like expanding Greenelan’s relationship, for example) but instead made everything worse. I’m curious, what are your thoughts on the handling of Mrs. Greene in the musical?

    • @meowdeer
      @meowdeer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they did a poor job expanding/exploring Mrs. Greene's relationship with Alyssa. There are a lot of nuances when it comes to homophobic parents and their lgbt kids. I think that this could've been a really interesting aspect to dive into, but the film oversimplified things and it seemed very incomplete. That's just my opinion on it though!

    God, I LOVED this review, it literally says all I think about the movie, but I have one issue Why did you choose to put the scenes of the Atlanta production to compare with the movie instead of the Broadway one, since the movie is an adaptation of the Broadway version it would make more sense to use that instead of the other one, but I’m just asking, it’s fine either way <3

    • @meowdeer
      @meowdeer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! I ended up using scenes from the Atlanta production since it was harder to find specific clips from the Broadway production that were decent quality. I should've made this clear in the video, that was my bad. Good catch though!

    okay this was SO well made, but beyond that incredibly insightful and important. it was so clear the prom was made for straight people to feel good about themselves and i think this video explores that really well.

    I've watched the movie before the broadway production (thank god for people uploading clips online), but I got to say, your review is on point. I thought the movie was not that problematic, until this. I'm quite bias to the broadway production because I know they've poured so much into the story (developing it for years), but again, everything you pointed out is heartbreaking because unfortunately it all makes sense.

    I totally agree, the show was great (barring Book 2), and Nickelodeon handled it poorly, REALLY POORLY. One thing you could have included was how Nickelodeon only renewed the show for one season at a time, after the preceding season finished, meaning that they couldn’t develop the story arcs over several seasons in the same way that The Last Airbender could.
