Follow me as I convert this historic barn, into an eco friendly, sustainable, permaculture based small holding. I will be custom building the upcycled interior and will eventually cover more of the small holding lifestyle.
I also do a lot of outdoor activities/extreme sports, so some random adventure edits make it into the mix as well.
Nettle barn is set in a valley on the edge of the peak district, Derbyshire, UK. It has a thriving natural habitat on which I aim to improve, designing and living with nature. Conveniently it also has a great small community of like minded people.
Although building a house uses lots of new materials, this being a tiny house uses a much smaller quantity and when it comes down to the fittings and fixtures I aim to use as many recycled materials as possible. This will also give it a quality, unique finish which will never fall out of fashion and need re-doing with a whole load of new materials.

Food forest year 2 tour zone 8B UK October 2024
I planted this food forest 1 year and 8 months ago now so I thought it would be nice to do an update tour to show how everything is getting on. I've planted a variety of different fruit and nut trees mixed in with different broad leaf trees and an understory of fruit bushes to create a biodiverse woodland that works with nature in a balance to grow food using permaculture principles. I'll do an update video every year to document the progress of the forest.

Nettle Barn Conversion Ep 13 Fireplace built from reclaimed blue bricks for log burner, tiny house
มุมมอง 80810 หลายเดือนก่อน
Fitting the log burner is such a big step! Really gives a feeling of home to this old barn conversion. And building it out of the reclaimed blue bricks which were part of the old dairy floor makes it even more special. The thick solid base will heat up from the radiated heat of the stove and hold that heat as a thermal store to keep heat in the house throughout the night long after the fire has...

See Ep 8 for building of the studwork and explaining why I've done it this way. This will all then9 be covered by an extra layer of insulated plasterboard to bridge the wooden studs and add thickness, giving a very good layer of insulation to this 170 year old stone barn. ...

really enjoying the journey, thankyou.
The difference from a few months back is crazy! Summer did well x
I know right. Can't wait to see it explode and evolve over the next couple of years!
can you please release episode 17 please
😂 I'm building my kitchen as fast as I can! Not long now
most eautiful floo i've ever seen. Hats off sir!
Thank you so much :)
Looking good.
Wouldn't it be easier to lay one full block at the perimeter rather than 3 courses of brick?
It's a long time ago now so I can't remember the full decision making on this but I think it needed to be engineering bricks
Turned out lovely mate
Thanks dude your 2 videos answered all my questions, really appreciate it
Good stuff, glad my woffle isn't wasted :)
Timmy do you have twitter or an email???
Thanks timmy. This was awesome
Looks fantastic. A lot of character packed into this little home.
Thanks :)
Nice one Tim, enjoyed the last few episodes. Great that you’ve learned and done it all yourself
Cheers dude, means a lot
Great use of natural timber from your own property very sustainable friendly.
Cheers
Top job Tim it looks great well done.
Thank you :)
Great work! Keep the vids coming!
Billy Petherick just sanded one of the floors in his chateau and he used an orbital sander with a vacuum attached. He found that it is less aggressive than the big commercial one
When you first lay it though you need to sand it a lot to get it all flattened off
Floor looks great and yes, they might be teak.
Thanks :) Yes, someone else has suggested teak
Hard to tell from a video, but depending on the age of the building they were reclaimed from they could well be mahogany or perhaps teak. Stunning job anyway, looks genuinely superb. I have an outbuilding I want to convert and your videos have been literally invaluable to me, would I be able to see your plans/technical drawings for when I submit for planning? Happy to give you some money for them
They were in a church originally. Not sure which one but probably very old. Of course. Message me on Instagram and I'll help you out with what I can. It's @nettle_barn
How did you become proficient in so many trades mate? 🪂
A dad that was a builder by trade and did everything himself, building my Dad's house with him, fully renovating my last house, lots of knowledgeable friends and a fair bit of Internet. There's nothing you can't do
@@timmynettles Such a wealth of knowledge mate.
Another great update Timmy. Really coming on! There were times where you were putting down the floor in this video and I was thinking "I'm not sure about that" but the finished article looks great. Love the detail you go into, your enthusiasm and the progress it is making. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks means a lot :)
Mahogany or not, it's beautiful! Cannot believe I watched this from being a ruin until now. It really is my favorite little house on the TH-cam.
Top follower 👊 glad you like the floor :)
Me too, thoroughly enjoyed every episode, hope there will be an open day!
Super job, looks great
Looks great dude! I’ve been following your build for ages you’ve done a wicked job. Nearly there 👌
Cheers 👊
Good tips here thanks!
Learning loads from this thanks!
Looks amazing. A real hobbit house !😉
Best compliment yet :D
It's fantastic to see the design differences people have. I am remodeling my house and have gone a different direction to you. However, I love bringing in natural items. Your bits from the hedge brilliantly fitted and well thought design are impressive indeed. I just installed the light in my guest bath and with the paint and tile it seems you are under water! Should be done by the end of the month and I can send you a video if you are interested. Looking forward to your next video!
Well done. Making use of 2 hand materials
Great update and the work looks fantastic. Look forward to the next one
Love the dog
Once again you are thinking outside of what is normally done. Bravo on the brilliant way to save space and have full treads for each foot as one alternates levels using stairs. The home is beautiful!
Absolutely loved watching the progress, Timmy, your family must be very proud of you.
Excellent
First comment Timmy. Keep her lit.
Cheers Timmy, very useful and the pointing looks great. I have a simiar job to do so will be getting the sds out. One tip for anyone who is planning on working with lime, wear gloves and glasses. Lime in your eye aint good!
Incredible work that
Cheers Wayne 👊
My wife and I are converting our shippon so finding your build fascinating. Great work, we’ve watched the whole series this afternoon. BUT! Will you be uploading a video showing the finished thing. I really hope so :-)
Glad it's been useful :) Yeah, all the fun insides to do now! It's going to be very quirky. Video of the space saving alternating tred staircase coming very soon
@@timmynettles can’t wait!
Wow 11:08! That looks amazing! ❤
Watching this totally inspired. Thank you for documenting the process! It must be so satisfying to watch back for you as well I hope. Well done!
Thank you! Yes it is. And will be even more so in years to come :)
Looking great Timmy!
Thanks 👍
Why the re-up?
Awesome
Great job mate, very well done
Enough, is their anything you cant do, great videos with good commentary, fantastic series five ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Thanks! 😊
More vids please T, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Lots more to come :)
Lovely! Got a lot of pointing to do.. How many hours / days would you say all the pointing (including prep) took? And you must've used a lot of bags of lime and sand? Thank you!
I'd say it was 2-3 weeks work and no idea how much materials I used now
Awesome Timmy.
dude buy a decent camera....great project.....
