Packed pavilion takes CAAD drawing to its limits at the exhibition 3D paperArt, part of the final leg of the Shanghai World Expo.
A number of students (Min Chieh Chen, Dominik Zausinger and Michele Leidi) from the Computer Aided Architectural Design Master's course at the ETH in Switzerland have devised a cardboard pavilion with the help of computer technology. The pavilion is situated outside the Shanghai Museum of Arts and Crafts as part of the exhibition 3D paperArt at the World Expo.
The structure features a number of variable truncated cones made from corrugated cardboard, which were glued together and fastened with tie wraps. The 409 cones that make up the pavilion each have a different size, fitting together like a puzzle to form a network of circles.
The overall goal of the pavilion is to demonstrate how architects can use CAAD to customize the design process. Here, each step was optimized by selfmade computers, from design to production, packing and shipping.
Packed pavilion will be on show until the end of November, 2010.

Humans do strange things. So much exertion to create something with the appearance of a material being reused. It's a very beautiful result regardless.
Of all the times not to use virgin cardboard... the hubris to build such a flight of fancy, basically a display throw-away out of cardboard, and then not do the obvious obvious material selection to recycle, unimaginable.
Fly me to the moon. Yeah, it kinda remind me of stylized moon.
А-ха-ха!!! ))) Я поржал )))
Artisans or robots, what's your preference?
I would’ve got 4 laborers from Pakistan, gave them some sharp knives, bailing wire, pliers and had this thing built in a weekend start to finish
Preciosa 😍
Is there a matrix to arrive at a hemispheric igloo? The underlying geometric order is not easy to discern, as one would with a geodesic dome (with repetitive polygons).
Remember that Simpson's episode where Bart and Lisa build a cardboard castle? At the end they melt it with water from the garden hose.
Great design. If the sections were made of aircrete, this would make a super light and indestructible structure.
Like a set of 5 or 10 molds that form the cone segments. What would you make the molds out of? Great idea.
hi! that's amazing. please explain more about ur structure and how to calculate! tanx
does this igloo go to church?
+xpez because it's holy!!!...HAHAHA
Valla, parecen niños. Tanta tecnología de punta, tanto dinero y tanta dedicación para terminar construyendo casitas de cartón sin utilidad alguna. Que pérdida de tiempo.
che baja unos cambio en todos tus comentarios queres matar
The first song is from the soundtrack of Neon Genesis Evangelion! One of the many "Fly me to the moon" instrumentals! :D genious choice! :D
Shut up and TAKE MY MONEY!!
AMAZING, greetings from Egypt (Y)
Espectacular!!
great video and act, I want to ask one question. What is the song at 2:05 ? thanks :)
amazing!
cardboard house + rain = asking for trouble.
I think the final product is amazing, but isn't it a bit strange to make a material that is used for shipping into components that were difficult to ship? Choosing cardboard could have been an opportunity to make the project super easy to transport and assemble. Never the less, super nice!
wow amazing structure! congrats on the results!
I am interior design student and just blown away by this . amazing work guys .
weird thing but interesting. what is that music /album?
Kudos! What next?
Awesome Concept.....AWESOME MUSIC!!! :) :)
