God damn it, this dude has the worst mix of accent possible. I am British and I can tell he spet time in the uk, but man half the stuff he says I couldn.t understand. It's a weird mix of an attempted posh british accent with his native I am guessing German accent

10:00 the short answer is that economic reforms stagnated our economy and wages from 2013 onwards. mass migration depressed wages further, increased crime from venezuela especially and the 2019 riots and pandemic further strained our economy/society. hence why things look rough and are only now picking up a bit. so yes, we are comparatively richer than our neighbours but far below the good times of the early noughts.

that church at the beginning was torched in the 2019 riots, plaza italia and the city centre was essentially ground zero for a lot of destruction that is still visible with boarded up windows and graffiti etc. add to that the pandemic/lockdowns and we got increased poverty, crime etc so you can we have dealt with a lot. having said that things are on the mend so next time it should be nicer.

one last detail: santiago and most cities in chile were spotless or much nicer looking before the 2019 riots. graffiti/decay set in and has only recovered a bit in recent years. hopefully next time you come it's in better shape. cheers

Before you begin trying to teach people in TH-cam about the history of the place you are visiting, you should do a little more research about their history before you start to comment; nonetheless, your video and the effort you put into it is very much appreciated.

In Santiago the State is busy recovering and restoring all the classical and colonial buildings and the results are amazing 👌. Definitely Valparaiso needs a lot of restoration . A lovely town but dilapidated.😢 It is nice to hear a honest report that shows the pretty and the ugly side of Chile. Maybe the Government get a wake up.

peruvians and argentines don't hate chileans, there is some resentment here and there but if you go to mendoza or lima it's nothing but friendly/respectful and it's the same with them here. anyway, sorry about the mess that is valparaíso, it's a beautiful city under all that graffiti.

I've noticed a trend of people purposely going to the shittiest parts of a city or country and baiting the natives to correct them or hate watch. That start where he shows a zoomed in shot of his face next to some graffiti and a worn down building while saying how great the place is was pretty blatant. It makes for lazy low quality content

You missed out on some of the best views of a city in Latin America just for being cheap, thats too bad. I lived in Santiago a while back and it wasnt what it is today, donwtown used to be so much nicer.

The most fancy parts of Santiago definetly are Las Condes and La Dehesa, if you are interested, you should go there and take a visit, the difference between there and Down Town Santiago are very noticeable.

Santiago is the least ugly city in South America along with Buenos Aires. Sometimes you complain about things that happen in European countries that are exactly the same as in Chile or the United States. Even New York, Paris or London have places with garbage, graffiti or homeless people. Why should Chile be different? Your opinion is actually very much in the minority because most tourists like Santiago, with its virtues and defects.

Nobody that visits Chile should do so for Santiago. You either love deserts and astronomy and visit the Atacama in the north, or you love nature and aventure and visit the south of Chile, lakes, rivers and Patagonia. Around Santiago you have good wine, but that's it. You only go there if you need a job, like those immigrants. According to local studies, Santiago has both the worst and best districts to live in the whole of Chile. The setting can change drastically depending where in the city you are, you visited some of the worst parts (but not the worst, trust me!). The rest of the country will also have different areas, but the contrasts between bad and good are nowhere near as marked as Santiago. It is the most dangerous city in Chile as well, by far. Naturally immigrants are overrepresented in the poorer areas as those are the only places they could afford to live and work (many times illegally). Why do they move to such places? You should ask them? I bet they have interesting stories. Usually it's because of disasters at home, like with Venezuela. Also, you only reached the border of the wealthier areas. Rich people live further east in the hills, away from metro connections and a bit further away from smog. There's a good reason for that, they don't want tourists or commoners to go into the northeast of the city. IMO you shouldn't visit. Nothing interesting there but posh international shops, restaurants and country clubs. Visit the rivers or lake districts down south, go to Valdivia, Puerto Varas or the little village of Frutillar, or maybe spend a little money and go to Pucon, the regional tourism hub. There you can book trekking to volcanos, rafting, kayaking, zip line, etc. Enjoy some activities before you are too old to do those things (It's going to cost money though!)... and if you have deep pockets, maybe rent a car across the Carretera Austral and fjords and see if you can make it to Patagonia.
