What should I plant in October?
Make sure you take advantage of the winter period with hardy crops that will help improve your soil and leave you with an early spring crop.
If you get planting now, you'll be preparing the soil nicely for your tomato plants and other summer crops.
Fabrice tells you what he's been planting - from spinach to cabbage and spring onions to shallots. If you live locally to Myatt's Fields Park, get in touch this month to get crops, planting support and fleece and netting all completely FREE.

How to deal with tomato blight
After a period of solid rain, your tomato plants may show signs of blight. What do you do? Avoidance is the best practice. Keep your leaves dry and never water in the evenings. But if you do see signs of blight, you can... - Strip off leaves to prevent blight spreading. - Remove the damaged fruit. - Ripen your remaining tomatoes indoors.
Blight and potatoes
It’s August and our potatoes are flowering and getting ready to harvest. Blight is a concern. It can sweep through them very fast. A wet spell in August could be your potatoes done for in days. What do you do when you see signs of blight? It depends. If you don't need to store them for long periods, gig them up straight away. If you do want to store your potatoes, remove all the top growth gree...
What can I still grow in August?
There is about 90 growing days left (until the end of October). So let Fabrice give you the lowdown on the best crops to sow and plant. These are crops that relish the shortening days, don’t mind a bit of rain and don’t need excessive heat. Herbs like coriander and dill seeds. Asian greens like Pak Choi.
Dealing with pests like slugs and snails
Fabrice gives his top tips on dealing with slugs and snails. Including... Slugs and snails like tight spaces. Make sure you have nice clear spaces between your veg and borders. When you do find them, hand pick and get rid of them. Beer traps can be effective: pop yeast in a plastic cup with some water and a bit of sugar. Slug pellets aren’t good for wildlife. If you are going to use them, pleas...

Jerusalema Dance Challenge accepted
Myatt's Fields Park Project - the charity running the park - took on the Jerusalema Dance Challenge this summer. Special thanks to our amazing dance instructors Nadz, Tony and Izach. We practised and practised some more. We performed it once, twice... and kept on dancing. Passersby soon joined in. Then we filmed the dances on a sweltering May bank holiday. Here is the film that John Morales fil...
How to grow sweet peppers
Sweet pepper is basically a chilli plant that doesn’t contain the chemical for making it hot. It’s a relatively new crop in the history of food plants. Plant it indoors for more peppers - they like lots of sun and warmth. Top tip: make a tripod to tie them to and keep them stable - they are top heavy and will snap without support.
Growing squash and courgette plants
We're starting to plant our winter squash. It runs everywhere and can take over your veg plot. Our advice is to grow it somewhere that it will trail without crowding out other plants, e.g. trail it over a concreted area or up a shed. Like cucumbers, courgettes crop best for about a 2-month period. They're big and need space. You can look forward to a crop just four weeks after planting. For loc...
Sweetcorn likes to grow with other crops
Grow your sweetcorn at least a foot apart because they need space to crop. But you can fill that space with other crops. Watch Fabrice explain.
The best way to grow aubergine
Grow aubergine in a greenhouse where it is sheltered and warm. If you plant it outdoors, it is much more difficult to crop. Fabrice is planting a variety called aubergine moneymaker. Watch to find out more.

How to grow vine tomatoes
These are big plants and you're going to need space. Don't try to squeeze plants together in a small area. You're better off giving excess plants away (good for your popularity too!). Top tip: keep the leaves dry by watering at the beginning of the day when temperatures will be rising, instead of the evening.

@@philipareed Again I am 58?56? Years old. Liver flukes in icy cold spring water? I have watched over the old Town spring for decades now. When I die my children will continue. I eat it I drink it and children of age 40 to age 6 come when I call. Liver flukes are common in soggy River bottom land and in swamps. If you're inclined to eating bad tasting food and water yes your at risk. Liver flukes can't survive cold or dry. This is my last post here. Do as you see fit.
