Home studio based in the Adirondack region of NY. I utilized a hybrid of digital and analog mixing out of the box. Harrison mixbus 32C digital version console is a priority for the main mix. Behringer X32 and fed into an old school Mackie 24-8 analog console from the 90s. I use DBX, ART, Behringer and Alesis external rack signal processing. Kali IN-8 3 way monitoring, ADS L400 for Mixdown reference. ADS L1590 studio monitors for mastering. When you want old-school warmth, you gotta use old-school gear. Most of the guitar tracks I record are with a DigiTech old-school guitar effects rack with dual 12ax7 tubes, my modern metal tones I'll use my Headrush pedal board. A Korg AX 100. I utilize sans amp style technology with amp simulators and emulation of different Marshall cabinets.

Teaching him the basic scale and he's learning very fast and I'm proud. He moved on from the Practice chromatic scale and is learning the major scale. Twinkle twinkle Little Star is a good start. I'm playing the backup chords so he develops an ear for it.

He's a lefty so I got him a classic Epiphone Les Paul Jr . It's got the Famous P90 pickup lol. It's got a great tone and is perfect for him to learn on.

I gotta tell ya..I just a/b'd the beheringer tubes with some vintage GE tubes..night and day, today I just got my hands on some vintage mullard short plates..wow even better than the GE's , they add the top end sizzle without loosing the mids and round off the lows beautifully

@@georgeogrady449 why emulate a vca in the digital realm, when you can pass the signal through the real source. Yes passing the digital signal outside of the computer into real Amazon mixing consoles and effects has a better sound than using plugins. Real vanilla flavoring
@@georgeogrady449 here's why. The computer is binary. Outboard gear is electric and sine wave. What is the function of VCA? A variable-gain (VGA) or voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) is an electronic amplifier that varies its gain depending on a control voltage (often abbreviated CV). VCAs have many applications, including audio level compression, synthesizers and amplitude modulation.

What would you rather master through the VLA or the behringer ?
@@mikeindel I don't use that stuff. I use mastering plugins. You can use them, but I'm not a fan of the 2 for mastering. The vla works great on bass guitar and acoustic guitar.

Its totally great to hear a show like this. I hope more people do these types of videos without plug-ins. What a jewel, this information is super important to alot of people who work without a DAWs and plug-ins and those who want to learn how to do this type of recording, mixdown and mastering. Thanks!
Thanks for the great information! Today I saw someone is seeling used one for $80 and found your video. I really like it! could u tell me, as a beginner (wanna start stepping into analog world) can I get it as my 1st tool? and how I have to connect it properly, what will i need besides it?
Yes you can use it as your first tool. The hookup depends on what gear you have. Typical punch insert cables will work. TRS insert cables. Just use the tube knob sparingly. You didn't want to treat everything with it. If that's what you're looking for then go for it. The tube warmth knob is really noticable when mixing dance music. It gives the highs some air

Even my signal path going to my monitors is analog. No ada converters interfering with conversion. The direct monitor output from the analog console feeds my power amp inputs to the L1590's. Just like in the days before digital was invented.

Unfortunately the drummer I was collaboration with didn't work out. He never sent me the drum stems. Just a2 track Mixdown that needed much work. I could only do so much with a 2 track Mixdown of the drums. I enhanced them with the Harrison Drum character plugin.
I'm using a neanderthal old-school 1990s DigiTech 2101 guitar effects studio rack for the guitar tone lol. Stock DigiTech cabinet simulation 😂.

No I'm guessing that the ferrofluid loosened up. I kept burning then in with pink noise over night. The safety over load for the tweeter tripped one time. After it reset the speaker sounded normal. Strange glitch

The bass guitar track needs to be done over. I didn't do the bass guitar. All the high end was low passed away too much. Not much top end to boost to get it to cut through. It's too boomy and no presence. Or it can simply be the strings are 5 years old lol which is notorious for bass players. Come into the studio with dead strings😂🤣😂🤣 Speaking of presence? I utilized that knob on my old Marshall head when I played through an actual amp years ago lol that's what it's there for. To bring it the top end so you cut through. Today's kids like the guitar fat and over distorted. Just toss in an $80 boss octave pedal to give the bottom end of the guitar an octave lower in the bottom end and be done with it. No need for a bass player. You're wasting your time to mix and record an actual bass player if you're going to mix bass guitar to give the guitar an octave lower tone. I laugh my ass off at today's modern mixes. I can do the same trick by tossing on a sub octave generator on the guitar track and give him fat bottom end. No need for a bass player🤣😂🤣😂🤣
When Steven slate, Chris Lord Alge start promoting their own external consoles instead of the millions of plugins they endorse? Then they've become the mixing masters again. It's so easy to lose sight and your true heritage with these bogus plugin companies causing you to contradict yourself in the business.
When you have a stubborn track in which this case was the random dynamics of the drum hits? That's when the sub group bus comes in handy. I have the 2 track drums assigned to bus 1&2 and have both channel 1&2 and bus 1&2 assigned to master bus output. This trick doubles the signals amplitude and naturally makes it louder than fighting with the mic preamp for those channels. You're using the channel preamp and the mix bus preamp to make the track louder. This is real analog method. In the Daw, when you do the same trick? It's emulating preamp amplitude and is not the real thing. It's just binary numbers making pretend it's raising the volume. That's all digital daw is. You're making pretend
I'm not an even Steven type of guy. I like drums out front with guitars a touch behind. I wet the guitars with rhythmic delays and reverb. The drums are dry except for the snare. I like leaving the bass and drums as the focal point in the mix while the others are giving the depth and dimensions of the acoustics within the mix.
The guitar sections were copy written back in 1986 in my younger years. Any and all plagiarism will be definitely dealt with. What you hear on my channel was written before most of the listeners were born. I've been playing for 40 years. Since i was 14yrs old. I dislike newer metal nowadays. They play with one finger drop tunes and the hi gain is way too much. Scratchy guitar that sounds no better than a vst guitar simulation in my opinion. You can use all the tube amps you want. When you hype it up with the daw mixer and eq? It sounds fake. You destroyed your analog signal with square wave hype.

Why don't you add vocals and lead guitar to the track. I know you have some lead riffs going but that tune has a plethora of hooks. You have several areas where a kick ass guitar break would seal the deal. The chromatic like drop is a big hook. Too bad we live so far away from each other....

Sounds very god - I had mine since 94 and it’s a beast. It can do simple and also very complex things. After all these years I found a way to do lo-fi anslog sounding delays - very cool. The overdrive can do some great break up sounds ala Gilmour if you tweak i right. The grunge is way to much but use distortion between 1-3 and it works great for massive power chords and leads - almost Fuzzlike😎
It's funny you mention your "Epi". I have several guitars including 2 Gibson's I bought around 1969-70. However, out of all my guitars, the most comfortable neck is my Epiphone Joe Pass model. It has a great jazz or rock sound. BTW I actually met and had a drink with Joe Pass in the early 70's. A very nice man. Very nice. You should check out some of his videos. He was and still is a legend.

Sounds good Jr. You are right about it's about the music. Not the player(s). It's funny that you mention Fogerty and Creedence. I used to say the same thing. Pure simple, clean music and Creedence was my perfect example of that. One hit after another. Each were great and fun to listen to and play. Individually they are good musicians. Together they were great.

My die hard Gibson brand Les Paul lovers are in awe that I got an Epiphone Les Paul model to sound like that lol. It's not the instrument. It's the way you play it. $800 Epiphone plays just as good as thousands of dollars Gibson Les Paul. If not better. It's not the brand I've learned over the years. It's the musician who makes the magic happen with the instrument. I learned that from Eddie Van Halen. He built a Frankenstein guitar by himself with different brand parts and a Gibson Humbucker pickup. It was a no brand name guitar. He became a legend in Rock and Roll

You can't beat the sustain from a Les Paul. Once you play one you're hooked.
I'm using a bone stock Epiphone Goldtop Les Paul and a DigiTech GSP2101 STUDIO TUBE PREAMP. Dunlop Crybaby in the middle position. Factory Alnico Humbuckers. The guitar plays just as good as a Gibson or better. Great bang for the buck. I've owned it for 3 years now. Rock solid build. It's held the intonation since I set it up 3 years ago. Neck is straight as an arrow and the back bow is still dead on.

I use the T1952 with a side chain of two Behringer Ultra Q Pro EQs... makes a amazing crystal clear sound. With the combination of the EQs it´s much easier to control the "sizzeling" of this unit, I love it. THX for this great review.

what do you mean, using the EQ's sequencialy on one line or on each line?? Before or After the compressor? im starting to learn on this :D
@@valterbeicinha9633 One EQ on each channel, so two EQs. I think the EQs are mono. I'm not sure if they work pre or after, it's like send/return so the Tube Composer works with the settings of the EQs. I have to read description about if it works pre or after... sorry.

Guitars were tuned somewhere around drop b. It might be a little flat from standard tuning. I use a drop tune pedal. I don't like the one finger drop tune guitar playing of today. We played with one finger when learning how to play smoke on the water by deep Purple when I was a kid years ago. So one finger cheater chords is an insult to the instrument and is child's play. I don't care for modern metal guitar players. Their tone sucks, the rhythm is lethargic and unreal. They need to learn what a real tube amp sounds like🤣🤣. Less distortion= better picking dynamics and better tone. The guitar is a mid frequency response instrument. To boost 60-80htz on the bottom end is ridiculous.
Kick was processed with the stock X32 channel compression, then fed into my Mackie. I didn't give out much bottom because I liked the way it was cutting through the mix. Didn't need to rob the glorious bottom end from the bass and certain low end from the guitar. Especially the sustained note bend fade out before the chorus. That's the compromise decisions that you make when mixing. Bass drum doesn't always have to boom super low👍👍
The snare drum was saturated with an ART pro vla 2 compression. That thing is a beast of a processor for $400 us bucks❤. I picked it up after watching Glenn Fricker do a review on the thing. You can really drive it hard on input and output to get monster fat compression effects.
I love that Old-school thock in a kick drum. I'm not a fan of the 5k boost to the kick. I use it sparingly. This style of 70s rock is a different approach. I'm older and not into trends of today's mixing styles. They use way to much compression and no dynamics punch. Sounds flat and dead. Especially metal. When your dinner is playing double kick at 180bpm? There's no look ahead compression in the world that can retain the dynamics of the transient. You'll have a squashed kick drum that sounds like a paper bag. Kids will be kids. Slow it down guys. Be realistic when choosing your tempo maps. Then modern metal destroyed the tone of true tube amp. Basic fundamental of the guitar is from 100hz - 6.3khz. when you break those roles you get scratchy guitar tracks and over compressed signal from using way to much high gain. The more distortion? The more the track is naturally compressed and loses dynamics. Less is better. When you follow fundamental frequency response of the actual instrument? That's when you'll use less analog emulation plugins and really make a mess of things. You're only trying to smooth out all the shine you added to everything. There is no 112k in a drum cymbals. Hookup a measuring mic and hit the cymbals. Now look at your spectrum anyliser. You'll see the true frequency range for that instrument LMAO. Like I said. Kids will be kids
Another tip I can give when monitoring? I use audiophile speakers. Another great hack is to set your low cut hi pass filter on your main master EQ to roll off anything under 60hz. This will instantly turn your Studio monitor into a small speaker. You'll be emulating what the mix will sound like on much smaller speaker systems. Average small speakers are from 60hz - 20khz frequency response. That's a great way to cross check your mix and see how it responds to that frequency range. If it's too bumpy in the low end you'll know right away. By removing the studio monitors extended low range, you'll be able to make a decision before releasing the track. I use this secret weapon of a trick to save you from running back and forth into the car, the living room stereo system to hear the track in the real world😂😂. Works like a charm. If the mix sounds good on a small speaker system? It's going to sound nice and fat on a full range hi fidelity system👍
That sight grit in the bass was from the X32 1176 emulation on input. All switches in and seasoned to taste. The Midas preamps in the X32 aren't bad at all. For a digital pre? You can drive them hard and still add a musical coloration👍 The only plugin emulation I use is on input. The expensive ones that are not reachable for the hardware version within my budget lol

Thanks Shadow. My next adventure is going to tune the Kali a bit with the boundary EQ adjustments. I'll setup my measuring microphone and pink noise to see where they sit in the room. I don't get crazy looking for perfect flat room response. It's a wild goose chasing your tail adventure lol. I know they're probably a touch bass heavy causing a bass shy mix. The highs are a bit dull due to my rooms heavy dampening. I'll see where it's all at when I get to that step. I just had gotten them in July last year. I had to wait for tax return to get the rest of the patch cables and external rack for my external processing. I finally have all my gear patched into the Mackie. It's pricey, but worth it for my taste for analog. Rome wasn't built in a day lol. So my next step is tuning the Kali IN-8 V2. They have easy smoother mids and punchy bottom end than my imitation Behringer truths Genelecs knockoffs 😂😂. The truths weren't half bad. Just a bitch to mix bottom end without having to go into 95db levels of monitoring. Way too loud for critical listening lol. The Kali are nowhere as near the volume of the Behringer truths. They are way more accurate. Especially at moderate 70- 76db volume levels.
