No disrespect, but you can't ask about a country that was wiped out without including the conditions that caused it. Those conditions, despite socialist denials, still exist today.

Thanks for this interview, I have seen John's name mentioned in a number of the books I have on the Rhodesian conflict. My husband was a territorial soldier and says he loved the Mag and the FN fal as a weapon, yes they punch very well and you had to keep them clean and oiled. Again, it is down to fire control.

Mujibhas were the non-military personnel that carried the gear for the combatants. Those little boys were not mujibhas, they were just kids herding cattle who if they saw something and did not alert, their own families were in danger.

My grandmother, uncle and cousin were killed by the Rhodesian forces that were camped at the Romesly Army base in Wedza on May 6 1978. She was an angel in human form whose only crime was feeding anyone who came by the farm. The accusation was that she was feeding the ZANLA forces, even though she was known to be apolitical but had a policy that anybody's son is as my son, and if they are hungry I will feed them. She was a devout Christian who had converted through the outreach of members of the Dutch Reformed Church. I was bitter about that for years but i understand the reality of war. The moral of the Rhodesian story is you can't keep the majority of any population as 2nd class citizens. Those black forces that made up 80% of the Rhodesian forces were not allowed to buy homes in the segregated white suburbs or send their kids to Govt 'group A' schools like Alan Wilson, Churchill of Prince Edward. The system could not be sustained. I was one of the first batch of students to desegregate Govt schools and those first few years were harsh for us black students.

We had blacks in our schools way back in the 1970's. Besides, what schools did the Bantu have before the Europeans arrived? What did your tribal chiefs do for you? What infrastructure did they create?

  • @martybop

Very good interview. Every new piece of information that sheds light on the reality of what it was like to be a police officer in Northern Ireland during The Troubles is something that is worth learning as it, too, is a part of Northern Ireland's history. I believe people from all sides of the religious and political divide, especially those who lived through the troubles, can now learn important things that, had they know them at the time, they might have been given the opportunity to see a more nuanced and humane picture. Such information - both sad and funny - can be found in the pages of these three excellent books.

No doubt. Look at South Africa now, it’s already failing and it hasn’t been all that long. They have rolling blackout periods just to keep anything running. It’s sad. To think what could have been in Africa, the food abundance and stability Rhodesia and South Africa could have provided would have been immensely beneficial for the continent.

As you undoubtedly know, the Springbok Club have been maintaining the tradition of the “Raising the Flag” ceremony, which was held in Salisbury, Rhodesia, from 1890 (when the country was founded) until 1979, and was then continued by the late, great Peter Sladden at his estate in Southrepps, Norfolk, from 1981 until 2017, at various locations during the recent few years. This year the ceremony will be held at Sudbury in Suffolk, a venue which has been chosen because it was the boyhood home of The Rt.Hon. Sir Leander Starr Jameson, KCMG, CB, PC (“Dr. Jim”), the great colleague and loyal assistant of Cecil John Rhodes, who was Administrator of Southern Rhodesia from 1894 until 1896, and Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1904 to 1908. This event will take place on Saturday 30th September 2023. Assemble at “Painters at the Angel”, 43 Friars Street, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2AG between 11.30 hrs and 14.30 hrs. The ceremony itself (which will consist of the symbolic raising of the Union and Rhodesian flags and the singing of the British and Rhodesian national anthems) will then take place at 14.30 hrs outside the boyhood home of Sir Leander Starr Jameson across the road in Friars Street. Proceedings will then continue at the Anthony Wheeler Room of the near-by Hive Community Centre, School Street, Sudbury, between 15.00 hrs and 18.00 hrs, where two key-note speeches will be given, followed by a fascinating PowerPoint presentation about the life and career of Sir Leander Starr Jameson. We trust that you will make every effort to join us for this important and inspiring ceremony, and will also bear in mind that organising such an event, particularly the publishing of a wee programme by Patriotic Press to mark the occasion, entails a fair number of expenses. Donations to help cover these costs can be made either by cheque made payable to "Patriotic Press" and sent to: Patriotic Press, BM SAPAT, London WC1N 3XX, U.K., or by direct bank transfer, the relevant bank account details being: Bank name: NatWest Bank Ltd., Herne Bay Branch; Sort-Code: 60-10-37; Account Name: Patriotic Press; Account No.: 54015138.
