Watching "Fate" in anime form is never going to be a good way to be enlightened by all the substance and characterization Nasu has put into /Stay Night. Fate/Zero anime is a very good adaptation of its light novel by Gen Urobuchi, but the material itself is identified as a spinoff (its own vacuum) and works like a prequel for what would be the fifth grail war. The reason its specified this in the postface light novels is because of the multiple major changes like Saber being a one-note naive idealist rather than a utilitarian pragmatist full of agency. It's easy to misinterpret some things as a first-time viewer since not everything gets explained and even some characterization will be seen differently since the anime cuts a lot of the prologue and epilogue, like it being framed more like coming of age story for Kiritsugu rather than a downfall. Fate/Zero has a similar central theme to Fate/Stay Night so ultimately its scope and overall cast will be weaker and less nuanced. It's still really good imo, it's literally the best Fate anime we got. Fate/Stay Night on the other hand is a terrible adaptation that works fine as an entertaining battle shounen. This works more like a companion piece to sit through after you've seen the visual novel. If you're curious about the visual novel, please don't hesitate on buying it. There's a Fate/Stay Night Remastered on Steam with official english localization, and removed the sloppy written H-scenes that it gets clowned for. It's a masterful experience woven perfectly and you'll understand why Shirou's main theme of heroism is such a fascinating character study, as well as the many Idealism vs Reality segments of the story.

The easiest way to understand fate is to assume each route/anime is its own story completely separate from the rest outside of some callbacks. So really, you can watch them in any order. Id suggest watching heavens feel last tho cause its more fun after you've already known the servants for a while. And by "last" i mean after ubw and stay night. Zero is sort of canon to the stay night routes but also not really a direct prequel. So like i said earlier, think of it as its own thing.

about Fate Zero, that's more your friend being an idiot and pretentious about a very specific lore issue/plot hole literally no one else would notice except ackshually kinds of guys who need to touch grass, just watch Zero, then after Zero, watch Heaven's Feel movies afterwards THEN the real spinoffs begin.

In Brief "Fate" is the overall original game The different anime are adaptions of the different paths in the games - So each can be seen as a spin-off but all give context as to each characters minset. "Stay/Night" is the Saber/ Shirou route with Gilgamesh as the Antagonist "Unlimited Blade Works" is the Rin/Shirou route with Gil as an initial Antag, Archer being the True antagonist "Heavens Feel" is the Shirou/Sakura route - With Sakura herself being the antagonist (Its convoluted) Fate Zero is a prequel which is canon to all "Fate" routes - however is the most relevant, and necessary to understand Sakura's trauma's, in the "Heavens Feel" route If you are looking for a watch order: F:SN>F:UBW>F:Zero>F:HF

fate/zero is a “””prequel””” written by gen urobuchi, not nasu. zero simply had a lot of altered events and even a vaguely different portrayal of saber’s character for it to be considered the true canon prequel to stay night. definitely watch heaven’s feel; mine and many other vn readers’ favorite route. although i will warn you that the movie trilogy is-a very divisive adaptation of the story, in fact i myself do not like it. however, there’s plenty to enjoy as an anime watcher from those. if you ever decide to read the stay night visual novel then definitely upload playthrough videos. with that, you can also read stay night’s CANONIC sequel ‘Fate/Hollow Ataraxia’ which has no anime adaptation; and likely never will. hollow ataraxia is integral in understanding many of fate’s spinoffs and lore. please consider this order for main entries: Fate/Stay Night (Fate, UBW, HF) Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (optional if you’re anime-only, but highly recommended) Fate/Zero Garden of Avalon (Drama CD-not required but is nice for saber fans and can even be found on youtube!) Garden of Sinners / Kara No Kyoukai (movies by ufotable and is a fan-favorite. great introduction to stories in the type-moon universe that arent related to the holy grail war) Lord El-Melloi II Case files (anime adaptation does skip arcs and is nowhere near done. IS canon to fate/stay night but relies heavily on fate/zero for context. also look into its sequel ‘Adventures of El-Melloi II’) Fate/strange Fake (anime is soon to be streaming and airing! relies heavily on all type-moon properties but can be best understood with knowledge of Hollow Ataraxia and El-Melloi. Like Zero, much of its lore abridged making it not truly apart of Stay Night’s original canon but still technically fits as a sequel of some sorts.) other big type-moon entries are: Tsukihime, Tsukihime Remake, Mahou Tsukai no Yoru, Melty Blood, Angel Notes, Tsuki no Sango, and the Extraverse
