1960s Honda EM300 First run in 60 years!
มุมมอง 5994 ปีที่แล้ว
Received a 1960s Honda EM300 unused from a friend. Cleaned the points, added oil and it started on the first pull. Purchased in the 60s by his father and never used. At only 300 watts it is more of a museum piece than a tool, and will live its life out on my shelf of treasures.
Moving a 15 ton Caterpillar 3516 Genset

We remove a Caterpillar G3516 from one location and reinstall it in another building, replacing a failed unit. The replacement is from a low demand location and replacing a unit that was shipped out for a 200,000 hour machine shop overhaul. The unit in the video has 225,000 hours but was rebuilt in place last year and has plenty of life left.

Nice engines. 2 stroke diesel.
As all the people come running to the dock with their bus tickets...
The Diesel Vanagon had almost enough power to pull a tricycle over a cliff - if it had a really strong tailwind. The "popcorn" Waterboxer had some pep, but if you made the mistake of letting it get just a teensy bit too warm, it blew the "head gaskets". (Quote marks intentional. I was a dealership parts manager when it was introduced, and I was also still a VW enthusiast. I'm the one who coined the term "popcorn motor" for the Waterboxer when I saw what those gaskets looked like in the parts microfiche. I haven't owned or driven any VW since about 1994, when I sold my Ghia to someone who wanted to restore it.)
@@helenault7452 the head gasket was blown when this was filmed. Its a common theme 😂
I had a 46 Bertram w Detroits. Like a rock
Worse thing to do is run them no load idle at dock. Wet stack stuck rings oocur . Best to start warm up get out under load asap.. We had marina i warned people not to idle for hours at dock smoke out marina also. I have brain damage from noise of these for years fixed them .
🎼I hear a symphony . . ." 🎵🎶
Who cares about a cold start?
I love the smell of Diesel in the morning.
Just another example how we know Detroit is the Motor City.
My uncle owns crew boats and supply boats in Texas. They service offshore platforms and ships. Had two 125ft fast crew boats. One had triple v12 cats (3412's) the other had triple Detroit 16v-149's. VERY distinct sounds from each one. FYI - the second set of numbers on Detroit's, is the individual cubic centimeters per cylinder. 8V-92 means V8 motor and each cylinder is 92 cubic centimeters.
One of the most unmistaken sounds, nothing screams like a Detroit
man I live in ma..I wana charter this thing .2 detroits singing ohhh ya baby
Real cream puffs, but like all older engines, there being phased out😮
Love to hear those Detroits sing!!!!
Dad's 65 Hatteras had 16v92 turbos. They started at the slightest bump of the button. Crank wouldn't even go through 90º of rotation before they'd light off. Never tried it below about 50ºF though... Is there something wrong with these 8v71s, or was it just the cold? The sound: Can't nobody claim Detroits sound "sweet" or "mellow"; and the "screamin' Jimmy" nickname is well earned...they always sound like they're taking it in the shorts - but boy, do they work. You learn to like their busy, urgent sound.
that must suck the fuel right down
Jfc jakes on the rv!?!?!?!?! I fucking died thats amazing 🤣
great memories
So cool! Detroit's rule.
8V71 Detroits, when running right and warm, produce virtually no smoke. Worked with buses. Start them up, put on fast idle.
Love your Hatteras, she's a beauty. I have a Viking myself
Baldwins 😢
12v71 not 12v92
i’ll tell you what, that’s music to my ears
beast!
Where’s Bus Grease Monkey on those slow starts?…lol
Needs block heaters. It's on the dock so no problemo warming them up for a while.
If I owned a similar boat, i’d swap out whatever was in there for two Mercedes OM606 engines. 3.0 litre inline 6 cylinder diesel, big turbos, big injector pumps, 1000hp.
Because an om606 at that power level will be reliable loaded 100%. Comical.
I always assumed the district sound was from being a two stroke ? Correct assumption?
Yep. A sound like nothing else

Such awesome footage! This is wonderful and to see great footage of both trains and Artie doing his magic with his baby Shay 5.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Back in the 70's and 80's when you needed power and you meant business, 2 stroke Detroit diesel. Actually in commercial ships like the ferries in Seattle the EMD 2 strokes are still competitive motors. Only recently have trains gone to high speed four stroke motors, and as usual they're Cummins. In the end the Cummins must be the best motor because they're the only diesel manufacturer who has been able to keep up. Even Mercedes is using Cummins on their compact and medium trucks now. Ok mercedes gave up to Cummins diesel motors.
freakin weymouth buddy
2:07 sounds so good!
Are they 2 stroke detroits?
Yes!
@@car2069 V8?
Hated working on these 757’s the belly’s sucked and topside is ridiculous the way cans need to be offloaded no space to sneak thru the sides.
Thats toms boat yard...wonder if he ever got his in the water?
Good way to get out of talking to your wife while driving
why is the second always a problem child
The noise in that engine room at WOT must be horrific, used to run a fire engine with a Detroit, could hear it a mile away
Absolutely stunning sound especially from the first engine
Are you sure this is a Detroit? I haven't seen one not leaking oil and wouldn't recognize one covered in a oil/dirt slurry
5:44 what whistle is this?
Sounds like a Hancock 3 chime
Beautiful. Nothing like that in the UK. I've never heard a detroit with my own ears
I don't think I've ever had to crank one that long
I am in the UK and if I had that engine in my boat I would cream my knickers, sounds like something that`s meant to fly
This is cool. And a rare look at Shay 3 in operation. I wish this footage had a shot of the Mill. Which could help indicate what year this is. The mill burned in 1982. So if it was still standing during this time this could be 1981
