    When I first bought this hous 17 years ago I felled 20 trees about that size around the edges of my property. I had quite the stack of firewood for a while. I haven't dropped another one in about 6 years. If I get solar I'm going to have a pro take out a couple trees because of the sheer size.

      I burn a lot of wood in my fire pit and often will cook over it. Also I have my camper storage compartment full just in case. Use Natural gas for everything else. I get satisfaction cutting my own trees and like saving the money. Someday we might have to hire out for everything due to age.

    Kinda like Purgatory Chasm but longer and wetter. Your Dad was a pretty cool guy. A small town doctor who made house calls. Enjoy the time off. We are enjoying retirement, just got back from a week fishing and watching campfires. We got a little bit of harvesting left to do in the garden, then some projects for the fall. For 67 you are looking pretty good. Centerville fitness is paying off. I continue to walk the dog about 3 miles a day while wearing a 25 pound pack. That goes on year round. I have a good four legged personal trainer. I miss seafood. The closest we get is bass and calico bass from the local lakes. Once in a while we buy some shrimp and make scampi or alfredo. Haven't had a lobster in years. But the pork here, oh, remember Forest Gump and how Bubba described cooking shrimp, that's pork out here. One little old woman could shuck all those in about 8 minutes. Move her hands so fast you couldn't see 'em. And complain about arthritis while moving that quick. She'd say I used to be fast, but I've slowed down. Last time we were in New England we went to Sandwich Neck Beach to pick stones. We've been cutting and polishing some. That's a great beach at low tide in the off season for rocks. And in the off season parking is free. But traffic on the cape in the off season has picked up substantially since we were kids. I can't imagine what the summer is like. The harvest out here in Iowa has been good. Several five gallon buckets of potatoes and sweet potatoes, huge winter squash, we were GIVEN 10 bushles of apples, 3 of pears, one of cherries as our fruit trees are mostly small. We got a good harvest from the blackberries, dozens of pints of jam. that was from blackberries only two years old. Oh, the mulberries, a half gallon of vinegar was fermented. And the radishes, onions, garlic, beets, carrots, pickle cucumbers, summer squash, tomatoes, still eating fresh tomatoes, peppers, rhubarb, green beans, two half gallons of sauerkraut fermented, a second crop of beets that got pickled. And herbs. So many dried herbs. Yah, it was a good garden this year. Lots of compost and manure and good well timed rain. As always, good to see you. Glad you are well. If you ever drive west on I80, find me and I'll put you up for the night.

    • @SaltyheadAdventures

      Living by the sea allows us to eat lots of seafood. And of course it’s always fresh. I love what you’re doing also harvesting plentiful fruit, and vegetables from your garden. Can never say anything negative about a farmer who lives off his land. I also enjoy farming but here on the Cape the soil is not that great. I can grow beautiful flowers, but that’s about it. In Oxford and better yet in Sutton, I had a really big garden which produced amazing vegetables and I also grew Christmas trees. Everything is great and we just adapt to where we’re at, but it’s all good and we just need to be healthy and happy. Always good to know you’re out there. Phil, you take care my friend. Thank you for the offer of a place to stay.

      @SaltyheadAdventures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Phil, There had to be over 200 seals in this one pile, more up the beach. We have lots of great white sharks thinning the herd. It must be pretty scary for a seal to have to live like that knowing any second 100 razor sharp teeth could penetrate your plump body. Everyone just wants to survive and raise a family and the seals are no different. I could sense their plight and see why they can only rest when they’re out of water unless you have humans with clubs, beating their brains out up in the Arctic

    I attempted to climb Washington back about '96 or so to be at the top for the end of the bicycle race. It was a nice day in the valley, about 70 and sunny. At 4,000 feet it was light rain and getting cold. I turned around at about 4,500 feet when it was like walking up a trout stream and getting dangerous. The race was cancelled due to ice on top. If I were to visit now I'd take the shuttle as well. I'm glad to see Anna with you. She spoils you rotten, eh? Thanks for showing all this. Oh, I just remembered the stupidest comment I ever heard about the summit. "Whats with all the boulders? Why did the leave all those boulders all over the place? It seems like a lot of work to bring boulders up there and for what,? To make it hard to walk?"

    • @SaltyheadAdventures
      @SaltyheadAdventures 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Phil, Always enjoy hearing from you. You seem like you always have adventure in you too. The thru Hikers I met on Washington tell me for each 1000 feet of elevation gain the temperature drops 10°. Many people don’t realize this and end up in trouble as they shiver into hypothermia. Anna and I saw people with no jacket, no hat no gloves forging ahead into the cold wintery blast and I kept thinking this is why so many people end up on the fatality list at the summit. I fell twice and cut my hand from the wind blast knocking me down. It’s amazing how strong the elements can be, we were a pretty well prepared, but just didn’t expect it to be this bad on Labor Day. I find out later from a ranger that it has snowed on every month of the year. Keep watching, soon I will have more time to devote towards making adventure movies. SH

      @@SaltyheadAdventures Yup, stupid people doing stupid things. Things here are well. Just yesterday I finished the potato harvest, about 100 pounds from about 150 square feet of garden. Only a few things left in the garden, almost time to pull all the vines up and throw them in the fire. And today I got my 90 day average miles walking the dog up to 20 miles a week. (average of 2.86 miles per day, 257 miles in 90 days.) It has been that high before, but it was a tough winter and spring also had things going on, but it is a nice personal goal. Wife and I are healthy, I had to have my PSA tested twice, as the first time it was high. But the second time it was in the same range it has been for the previous three years. That's it for life on the prairie. Good to see you and Anna and great to hear from you.

    I use a milk crate with the float (pool noodles) zip tied to the top so the clams stay in the water. Also I have a Lowe’s bucket with a lid, I fill it with salt water and put the clams in the water and let them purge for about an hour before cooking.
