hydreigon is one of my favorite recent cards, budew is a great addition. now we can slow the game down and get off devastating attacks before our opponent sets up

I watched that same video about the future box deck and immediately built it. I didn't have any luck with it either and moved on pretty quickly!! LOL
Got top 4 in my last cup playing hydreigon, but a different list obviously. But I really like your list so may give this one a try and see how I do with it.
I play a ton of Garde and Terapagos on ptcgl, but my wife plays with me irl and she has been using Hydreigon for the last few months. We’ve tried a bunch of different iterations of the deck but one card we quite like to include is Janine’s Secret Art and of course Binding Mochi to go with that.
Lol nice. Just slapped tf outta this list with control. 😎
love this idea, ever since hydreigon came out i built it since i pulld the isr from a box.. but would love to discuss about the usage of 1 metal, psychic and crispan cause with rotation coming getting neo back would be hard to get again and to utilize the second atk it would be difficult to do without the basic energy. But i do see the potential in it especially with future sets coming and it will be here for awile
idk what to cut for it but the more i think about it that might be needed. ive just been lucky enough to not prize the neo energy but i think its possible the deck can just fall apart without access to the second attack. all i can think of is cutting dark, stadium and go down to 2 budew or nest balls. but yea it might be needed, prizing neo is only 10 percent so its possible it should almost never happen but it probably lowers the odds to win too much to risk
@ yes i thinking a dark, budew and the town store cause yes you do want to find the counter gain but with wanting to play it slow and in a way would allow you to eventually put in xeroics or eri once testing more with ratios, i can eventually see hydrei being an control but win option atk unlike most control decks like snorlax or pidgy control, since hydrei first atk can help with the mil effect though it just 3, it like a pokestop but no targets to get back 😂
How does Hydreigon beat Lugia and Archaludon? Both are huge meta threats and Hydreigon gets steamrolled by both.
archaludon isnt the best unless they dont evolve their basics to get ready for a dialga play and obsidian can take them all out. i think if lugia doesnt play wydeer its pretty winnable. drago has bad matchups into those two decks and does pretty well. idt people really like playing lugia and with like 15 valid decks, every deck has some bad matchups
I loved the look of Hydreigon as soon as I saw it, I'm glad to see you trying to find space for it in the meta. I really liked the new intro as well, it was very clean and provided a nice primer for the strategy in the actual games.
thanks so much. im hoping putting more effort into the intros can make the videos stand out a bit. i think hydreigon's attacks are too good for it to not be meta at some point, especially the second attack. and its just really fun to play
I like the intro! Also I have been a huge fan of hydreigon. This is a solid way to play after rotation. I have been using rotom and lunineon with Forrest seal stone, and a crispin with a psychic and a metal energy to potentially use obsidian on 2 different hydreigons. I think I will keep crispin after rotation, but will definitely try budew and a second PLH stadium because I definitely struggle vs big basic decks
big basics can be tough for sure, i find the toedscruel and not letting them use fez while ionoing them can make them miss an attack at some point and thats usually enough to win or cripple their board enough to make them miss another attack
@ I will try that! I played the toedscruel line in DragaThorns and I liked it a lot
You mentioned that Iron Leaves deck and thats what I've been loving recently. Its so good! I haven't used Hydreigon in a while. It felt like a deck where if they can ohko Hydreigon you're cooked. And the setup takes sooo much. Might as well play Dragapult to have a simpler setup with a similar attack. Great video though. Good to see how it is in this new set's meta.
ill have to try it again cause i was losing most of the games my opponent set up. getting one shot twice feels pretty bad for the deck lol. thats why i ended up with the toedscruel, to help against raging bolt and ogerpon needs 4 energy to one shot with just a dark and counter gain so i usually try to stick to only have the one energy against ogerpon decks
Why are you using Rescue Board? Could be switched for a Hisuian Heavy Ball in case you prize the Pecharunt ex and the opponent tries to lock something in the active.
To guarantee being able to budew turn one and attach an energy to something else?
@@enamorus1 That makes sense, but you would need to 1. Go second (not guaranteed) 2. Have it not prized 3. Have a Arven or it in your hand 4. Actually need using it Looks like too much conditions for something so simple. Feels like a leftover from the Town Store list.
yea it could be, its nice to have arven guarantee budew. there's not enough energy to depend on opening one and the times there is an energy its nice to get an attachment down. it would suck to prize pech against a deck that can retreat lock but its like the odds of hitting one of those decks times the 10 percent chance to prize a one of so it shouldnt be too likely. prizing fez does suck tho
@@sixpokemanstcg I've been really liking this list and I'm planning to play it IRL. So far, the hardest part has been not being able to draw cards without depending on Fez + Budew dying. Getting Budew'd is awful as well, so it would be nice to think about a way of countering it.
Dam man your plays are so good keep it up. You should go to a regionals
thanks, i appreciate that. hopefully next season i can afford to get to few and maybe atlanta this year if enough of my friends go and we drive down
Nice intro, but why are the gen 5 hydreigon spites rotating and not playing?
lol i dont have the pro version of my editing software
I play hydreigon and I constantly lose to pult players 😅
Don't ever let them hit your Deino. Prioritize Hydreigon, and focus on getting the obsidian as early as possible. Hit Drakloaks and maybe Duskull to shut them down.
always feels bad losing to pult. but exactly what @fleurseva said, if you can attack with an obsidian before they evolve you should almost always win. can also force them to evolve their drakloaks and ko any that they dont to make iono more effective late game. if they start playing heavier stretcher counts the toedscruel could be good but it looks like theyre playing 1 now so its probably not worth it. also dusknoir is the only way they can one shot you so focusing that down with obsidian can be worth it sometimes. they also usually play 2 candy and if they ever use 2 dusknoirs all you need to do is use obsidian to hit the ex for 130 and ko two drakloak then ko the dragapult with the first attack. it can be hard if our item lock doesnt do enough and they get into their lances but i think its winnable
This list feels like a worse version of pult. Unless you just smash your opening hand you might as well just concede vs pult.
Nice Decklist, might try it. I am in the procecss of building a Hydreigon Deck in real life rn and already try to think a bit about rotation. What would you possibly replace the dark patch with (if you already eye some cards)?
janine would make sense, might need super rod over stretcher with janine but im not sure about that. there's also a very slight chance the game slows down enough after rotation that we can rely more on attachments. i dont think the patch is the most important card either, its more for pecharunt and to build an obsidian in one turn but normally theres enough time to just attach as long as you can get into energy every turn
I’ve also had a lot of success with lzb Hydreigon recently with drago on the down low
Is there no space for Janine? I find the possibility of accelerating 2 dark energy in a tune then hand attach to be very powerful
janine could definitely be good. ive been thinking about trying a version that can rely on supporters more to make playing around item lock easier. ive never tried the lzb hydreigon either, ive been mean to try that and lost zone dragapult for a bit. i guess at this point lzb probably isnt a good way to play dragapult anyway
I’m trying to make Hydreigon work for me in the new format. I loved it with dusk in Surging Sparks and it got me all the way to Arceus league. I’ve been workshopping it to make it work against the threat of Budew. This looks way more consistent than the Hydreigon Terapagos list I’ve been workshopping
Wow even to arceus league? Would you mind sharing the decklist? Im struggling with the draw engine 😢

Keep in mind this was BEFORE Prismatic. This was for the Surging Sparks format
ive been liking the deck as straight forward as possible. i thought about putting a jacq and lumineon in the deck but just ended up with the high budew count hoping that item lock could mess with the opponent and make them miss item lock at some point. the 3 budew can help to start it then any poffins turn one can be spent to get the evolving basics
the deck really relies on pidgeot and fez quite a bit. i found that as long as i get a hydreigon attacking i can get into a pidgeot at some point. the second attack is so strong it can make it hard for the opponent to go around the hydreigon if you have it fully built up or just need the neo to start using obsidian
came back to pokemon tcg after 10 years. game really has changed a lot ☠️
Same, I played up until 2019 and coming back 6 years later has been rough. The scalping and damage inflation goes crazy.
@chickpeabunny9435 scalping?
yea, quite a bit. that would be like seismitoad, darkrai, night march format? one shots are definitely a lot more common now. having to 2 or 3 shot everything is probably the thing i miss the most about older formats. the person talking about scalping just means how people are buying up all the irl product of new sets and selling it for crazy amounts
@sixpokemanstcg ohh i get it but i assumed some of the new non-full art or non-alternate (dont really know the term) ex or v/v-star were cheap so those who wanted to play wouldn't be affected by price that much and yeah i used night march when i was playing back then
i never did well with a stage 2 deck but i'll give this a try again!!!
it is quite different because stage 2's cant be as aggressive and your almost always going to fall behind. so finding a way to use the attacks to make up for the lost turns is important. also knowing when to stop benching low hp pokemon and forcing the opponent to go through the stage 2 is important too
Def going to try and stack these two with a frosslass and calamitous snowy mounting deck I’ve been trying to come up with
ive been trying to make a good spread deck for a while. i really want to make the alakazam that moves damage counters around work
Yeah really like the video. I spent the better half of a day trying to test a Jacq build with four copies of budew. I think replacing the pidgey line for 2 copies of Bidoof could be good to try. If you want to go rotation ready we could try Revaroom or Dundunsparce
What do you need four Budews for? Giving away four prize cards for free?
i never tried hydreigon with a bibarel type pokemon. the toedscruel could in theory just be a bibarel line. its hard to judge how helpful the toedscruel is when testing online. its so much easier to judge irl with a friend when they can say if how much its hurting them. idk if revaroom would work just because of the low energy count. i really like jacq with how popular i expect budew to be, makes me wish i didnt sell my irl alt art one for like ten bucks months ago lol
it slows the game down and going behind in prizes is good for counter gain and catcher. so its like trading a couple of prizes for some time to set up and possibly forcing an opponent to research away some good items and it should mess with their setup a bit and make it harder for them to target down multiple of the evolving basics
The editing on the intro is so good! Keep up the great work!
thanks so much! im glad people seem to like it cause ive been trying to figure out a way to make the intros easier to watch
Love this list! Thanks a lot for explaining how matchups should work when we play it, really helpful. Do you think a gravity gemstone or devo could work in this list as well?
i almost added gemstone but it clashes with the countergain a bit, it does work on budew sometimes tho. but the main thing i wanted to do with it was be able to counter catcher a fez and iono and hit for 200 to set up another 2 prize option for obsidian. the reason i didnt put devo in it is because zard and dragapult are the main two decks it would be needed and they both have tera bench protection so it would only get the pidgeot if they play it. garde leaves their pokemon unevolved so that just comes down to if they play manaphy. i havent played games with either cards but i'd have to play those matchups more to see if theyre a problem, then i would consider adding techs
Yeah I think trying to build the Hydra like zard just doesn't end well for the simple reason that zard is more consistent, Hydra needs to be more streamlined in order to be successful
i agree, building every stage 2 like zard just doesnt really work. especially with this deck when you have to find energy and counter gain, so arven cant just grab forest and a way to get pidgeot out
@@sixpokemanstcg Yeah true, looking forward to this post rotation when theirs no manaphy and hopefully things are a little slower for the deck but one more thing, thanks, the gameplay was insightful with how you win with Budew
@@emberpowertcg7692 candy zard players will have to change massively with budew coming into the meta. Zard isnt going to be as consistent as it used to be with the adjustments its going to have to make.
During the surging sparks set, I for some reason got 4 hydragon, and all were special art, which was so weird, but then I said why not ? And tried a deck but the deck was too inconsistent so this video helps me build my hydragon deck
awesome, i hope you have some luck with it. i was just playing all the matches really slow to make up for not having the rotom draw. i thought about cutting the toedscruel to add a 4th iono and another consistency card but i thought this was a nice balance of power and consistency cards
Thank you for the video and the decklist !
thanks for the comment! glad you enjoyed it
Big fan of the new intro style! Hopefully it doesn't increase your editing workload too much.
thanks! it takes quite a bit longer but i figured it would be better than just looking at a deck list the whole intro. i want to get better at editing and i have a decent amount of free time so its worth it, i think
I started going back in this game after my break. I used to play Calyrex back in the days, now I'm going to Gardevoir EX, and I might also change to Espathra Xatu soon. This video is helpful
Before the banette garde can you do a budew garde list first?
yea for sure, i already have the games for a hydreigon video so im gonna do that first then ill do budew garde
@sixpokemanstcg Thanks. Just wanted to see some games before my next league. I also will watch the hydreigon video as it sounds interesting.
Why not... Budew Banette Garde?
thats what the banette deck is gonna be im pretty sure lol. but im gonna do updated gardy with budew too. this set isnt very inspiring and gardy is one of my favorite decks to play
ok, ill probably start working on gardy tonight and tomorrow so that i can get it out soon
I think you could definitely slot in a single grass energy, especially since you're running dark and psychic already.
yea i thought about it for a bit cause the second attack is pretty good but trying to get 2 extra attachments on the espeon without it getting knocked out while also trying to attach to munki's seems really hard. i also thought about making it more like a control deck and maybe adding a crispin in get the second attack in one turn, i think that seems pretty cool too
Yeah it happens moor often than you think
We need to find a post rotation gardevoir deck
i think it will still be good in some way. its just hard to visual what the new format will look like so its hard to know what its going to look like. if i had to guess it's going to be more of a turbo drifloon deck with like maybe cycling road and 4 vessel's and possibly pidgeot or maybe just fez. drifloon will be much safer without vacuum because only certain decks can play jamming tower
i've been looking everywhere for a somewhat usable espeon ex deck, ty so much for making this! i've never played gardy before though, is going first or second better?
second
Second if you have tm evo
i totally forgot to say it in the video but going second and using budew is ideal but if you have a dead hand and can use tm evo i go for that instead. i have thought about cutting the evo tho because using budew is so much better most of the time
Will still be cooked in a few months without refinement kirlia.
yea, a few months is a long time tho
I actually like you going back and refining, or even just showcasing more games on a deck you enjoy. It's neat to see Espeon fitting into this deck so nicely.
o cool, i appreciate the input. i always feel weird about posting a video on a deck that ive done a video on too soon. also this set is pretty uninspiring for the most part lol so im probably gonna be doing some a lot of repeat decks and hopefully a couple more informational videos. the next set looks awesome tho
Thank you! :)
Great content mate! Thank you 😁
Played probably over 1500 games of tcg online (could play alot due to nightshift) and i recently started playing again. Played against a wugtrio mill and just kept setting up without killing them cuz of reversal energy, counter catcher, and that counter tool. They didnt get off a single mill cuz they were waitng for me to take a ko, but i just keep spreading damage with munki and rad alakazam and they got frustrated and left😂 have under 200 games on live, but i still remember from tcg online how important the prize trade is
Love this deck, however it is not easy to play at all imo. There's a lot of playing a few turns ahead in a way. Definitely satisfying when it works
yea fore sure, the games that have a really obvious plan are pretty easy but some matches are really hard to see the win condition, like dragapult and ancient box are really weird matchups. its definitely fun and satisfying when an off the wall plan comes together on the last turn
Love this deck! Have you considered a Grand Tree package to avoid Budew item locks, or is there just no space for it?
space is really rough, that is the other ace spec i considered tho. prime catcher also being a switch is really nice and theres some games i would like another gust card. it would be nice to more reliably get pidgeot tho
This deck might lowkey be really cool with a Grand Tree!
i was thinking about trying that out, idk what to cut for all the middle evolutions and extra gust card tho. the deck seems like it should have way more space than it does
Nooooooo I missed the streams ;<; stupid work
i think im going to stream at least once more this weekend later than i did yesterday, hopefully it works out for your schedule
Its the best place to find weird, rogue decks in arceus, and casual sometimed too but thats why i love seeing random cards doing well
i expected it to be like all drago and block lax but it was more like that before i got to it. i also dont play as many games on live as i should so i dont have the biggest sample size. its cool to play against random stuff right now too since im not testing for any irl stuff
I’m a returning player to TCG and I wanna say this video really helped me out thanks man keep up the good work
thanks so much, im glad to hear it helped!
Are there any tech cards or matchup plans that single-prize decks could use against Regidrago and/or Dragapult decks? Been playing a variety of these single prize decks like United Wings, Ancient Box, Conkeldurr and Okidogi, and I'm really struggling in these matchups.
theres unfortunately no hard counters but cards like toedscruel, klefki, manaphy and rabsca are the cards i can think of that mess with drago but only fit into certain decks. like rabsca might be needed in united wings for the deck to even have a slight chance. i find manaphy can help in evolving decks to make drago players over extend for the prime catcher canceling cologne play, then you have to try and exploit whatever resources they hopefully mill with their vstar. the kyurem ex that paralyzes is what pokemon wanted to be the counter but idk how helpful that is in most decks. i think budew will help too, learning to play against item lock is a skill not a lot of players have right now. with ancient box make sure to keep an eye out for great tusk mill win conditions. wish i could be more helpful but the deck is really strong, make sure to pay extra attention to their resources like switch, prime and energy switch, sometimes its easy to punish them benching an extra drago when low on e switches
I enjoy both styles of your videos a lot. I found your channel primarily just through the gameplay commentary but wound up also enjoying your more essay like videos, so it would be tough for me to say which direction I'd prefer you take your channel. The best answer I could give is is "whatever you enjoy doing and are motivated to do" because if you lock yourself into making stuff you don't like, there's no real point.
thanks for the input. i was hoping to have a sequencing video out this week but got like half way thru making it and realized i want to figure a better way to present the information. i like making both but the gameplay videos are way more fun when a new set comes out. thankss again
19:41 you could've attach the Lightning from hand to active Pikachu and swing for game or am I missing something?
Sylveon attacked it previous turn which means Pikachu does 100 less damage so it would only have done 200
they used the first attack that lowers the damage. i meant to say that but mustve gone off on s tangent or something. i didnt want to put the pikachu on the bench and get it shuffled back in the deck and was hoping they would not use the first attack or something
I'm a veteran MTG competitive player, and just started playing Pokémon. This video is such a good review of how different the games are, and you made such a good analysis of making clear how the decision making was actually going, that I was invested adn watched the whole thing with a smile. My first thoughts were that Archaludon player was missplaying really bad, but understanding that Pokémon has some sort of late game strategy and that decisions leading up to that were made since the beginning really made me change how I see the game. Thanks for the video.
thanks so much for the comment. i think pokemon being so simple at a surface level but complex at the top level is one of the coolest parts about it. just learning the rules of the game is so easy that people end up getting into the game by accident lol. its really cool that my video could do that, thanks again!
Man, I cannot get enough of your content. You’re the best man! Keep going!
that's awesome, thanks so much! i very much appreciate it
I didnt know Robert sepehr played Pokemon tcg aswell as being an awesome anthropologist
