First heel training session, Nyx

This is the first time I have practised walking at heel with my young puppy. She had never worn a lead before the session but did very well. (I realise that I somehow had my camera the wrong way round and refer to her on my left hand side although it looks as if she is on my right. Technlogy baffles me!)

    I taught my German Shepherd dog to stare at me in the eyes by sitting in the grass with him and spitting small pieces of boiled or baked chicken breast to him immediately upon his making eye contact. If he missed, I'd quickly grab it up to prevent him from getting it. I gradually increased the time between eye contact and reward and in only 2 days time I had a very reliable base for obedience work. I find that if you can hold the reward in your mouth, the dog is already focused on your face instead of your hands. The missed pieces get recycled for other training exercises fed by hand or spot.

    Hi Jimi. For some reason I can't find your comment on TH-cam, only on my laptop. I find 1.5" works well because the fabric folds and rolls and a longer length gives a better snuffling experince and ensures the base is covered up. The choice is yours! I guess you could make them narrower but longer and that might have the same effect. Good luck!

    I have had a reactive dog for 11 years, and oh my god this command has not only saved me, but it has saved his reputation. Neighbors don’t even know that he was a reactive dog because I didn’t let him make iContact with other dogs, which prevented the other dogs from being triggered, as well as my own. It’s honestly been a lifesaver.

    • @helenatton-FIDODogTraining
      @helenatton-FIDODogTraining ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Once the dog gets the idea that looking you in the eye results in 'Good!' and maybe a reward, then I introduce the word 'Watch'. Before that they wouldn't understand it. Then you can use 'Watch' to keep bringing their attention back to you so they stare at you for longer and longer. Hope that makes sense.

    Hi Sue, I make the holes as small as possible to only just allow the strips through so it hasn't been a problem. I have washed mine many times now and it has only lost one or two strips. I guess you could knot the strips on both sides of the hole but if you do, use longer strips. I wonder if dogs might chew on the knots but I don't know. Good luck!

    • @helenatton-FIDODogTraining
      @helenatton-FIDODogTraining ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kristin, Canvas would probably work OK, as long as it doesn't fray. I've washed mine many times and the only time I've lost strips is when one of the dogs pulled one out! Make sure the holes are not too big. I used a skewer to push some of the ends through. Someone else suggested knotting the strips on both sides of the holes. It would be a pain but very secure.

      I used blackout curtain lining, which has some form of rubber or plastic in it but any non-woven fabric that doesn't fray will do just as well. Here are some examples -knits, spandex, fleece, faux suede, plasticised cotton, vinyl. I would avoid felt for the base as it may shronk when washed.

      Hi. Any fabric without a weave, like canvas or something with a coating, like the plastic coated cloth you can buy for table covering. Anything that doesn't fray when you cut it really. I made mine from blackout curtain lining, which has a rubber backing.
