I love to fish; on a kayak, on the bank, in the river, it doesn’t matter to me if it’s fishing. I do kayak a lot, and I love it, but fishing is my thing. You’ll see a bunch of that on my channel, enjoy the content, I know I do!
New Brunswick Fall Smallmouth Fishing

Wow, water like glass kind of day...!!
Oh haha the wind can change would you look at that!
@@zacharymelanson763 yep. Was windy after that first trek up the river. Nice moment though. Haha
Some beauty fish there Travis! Sweet day on the water.
@@MasterCrowOutdoors thanks! Was such a fun day out when you can find fish like that. Had two weekends in a row like that
Nice fall footballs! That one spot sure held a bunch of fish
@@Utopia_Outdoorsman yep. The fall feeding pattern was in full swing.
Great video! Kayak turned out awesome.
@@DaveysWorldFishing thank you! Very similar to my old set up with a few tiny tweaks.
Man, catching a musky is hard enough but trying to do that during a multispecies competition is insane!
Having multiple chances with the muskie was painful. At least you got that sturgeon even though it wasn't huge.
@@differentfins it sure is hard Joe, but we had 9 people catch musky this year. We have a lot out here. A bigger sturgeon would have helped. Still had a super fun year. Thanks for watching!
0:35 Oh nick… we love ya bud!!!😂😂😂
@@HLHS_Fishing haha. Funny guy isn’t he 🤣
Great video T! It was a grind of a day!
Who's that crazy guy almost forgetting his kayak? 😂
@@TheReelEdge it sure was wasn’t it!
@@TheReelEdge yea, who was that guy again?!?!?
Did you learn how to kayak so fast from mario kart? You'd defintely beat me at kayaking. Lol. Mario kart too.
@@jasararose1854 not really, but I’m sure that helped me a bit
Lmfao "I've been holding a pee for two hours, I should let it out" 😂. How do you guys take care of that? I bring a large empty Gatorade bottle, it's my pee bottle. I stand up, piss in it and dump and rinse. 😂
@@differentfins haha. Yea, fishing and tournaments are not a good mix for me to empty anything. I normally just stop on shore somewhere to do my business.
Your day resembled mine, grinding for Muskies, trolling and getting snagged lol... that was a toad of a smallie you finally got after weeding through all the small ones.
@@TheReelEdge yep! A total grind. But still a fun day fishing with everyone!
That’s an interesting tournament format. How does it actually work? I’ve only fished KBF for bass. Would love to get into something different once in a while. TY
@@JoeNajorFishing hey Joe, glad you think the format is interesting. Two really good resources to understand it better. 1. The H&P website at this location: hookandpaddle.ca/ and the second is to check out our TV show on Amazon Prime. It does a good job at explaining out tournament format too. Let me know what you think of them!
Can you do one In Indian lake by millville?
@@BrySweat I’ve never fished there before, what kind of species are in the lake?
@@travismelanson catfish usually I just would like to see if you catch something else
@@BrySweat it’s pretty far for me to travel to it.
Great season and video. Do you have any recommendations on spinning rods? I’m replacing a medium heavy and I’m having trouble deciding.
@@davidkelly7448 I think it depends on how much you wanna spend really. I’ve been enjoying my pro qualifiers from BPS. They are priced pretty fair. I’d probably go to Shimano if I wanted to spend more money.
Congrats on the new PB largie and congrats on an overall good Hook and Paddle season!
Thanks Joe! It was a good year, lots of competition.
Nice catch keep up the good work
Thanks!
Seat or no seat, still a fun day on the water!
@@MasterCrowOutdoors haha. Yep, the lower back was a bit sore, but still great to be on the water
Hey Travis I've been following your H&P series this year on YT. I wanted to ask your thoughts on this piece of water as I have not fished it yet. I live in Sussex and primarily I target smallmouth as my favorite species to catch and I'm looking for areas to fish within one hours drive from my house that have a decent amount of smallies. We usually hit up Gagetown area but are curious of what Chipman has to offer. In your opinion is it as good, worse or better that Gagetown? We can go out to Harts lake and catch a few fish but it's not enough to keep the kids interested. I'd be looking at numbers caught not size as my primary motivation. Anyways just curious for an opinion on that area if you would offer one. Good Luck on your tournament series its fun to watch and thanks in advance for any insights.
I fished the hook and paddle, and it was good for pickerel and whites, but the smallie action wasn’t on for me, I reccomend trying it to see if it works, but it’s not better than Hartts or other places like it imo
@@HLHS_Fishing thanks for your feedback. I’m trying to find a decent smallie fish as near as I can to home.
@@mikerouse6004 if your targeting smallies, I wouldn’t go there, nice pickerel, but not many smallies!! Good luck finding a spot, (idk how far it is, but lake utopia has some nice smallies in the Middle East side of the lake
@@HLHS_Fishing I’ve fished Lake Utopia many times and with decent success but it strays past the one hour drive mark to 1.5 hrs. My intention is to find some decent areas with good fishing you can hit after work mid week when the weather just begs you to be on the water and you can hit it and quit it to make the drive worth the effort.
@@mikerouse6004 hey Mike, if I were you I would go out to the Hammond river and start learning that. It would be very close to you and it holds some nice fish, especially in the spring time. It will also hold striped bass and many other species. Chipman does have smallies in it, some years it’s harder to figure them out, but this year wasn’t too bad. I caught about 15 that day.
Come fishing In plaster rock newbrunswick to see if there stergion i been trying to catch one but I can’t but I was told they were in St. John river and tobique river
@@EpicBradyOffical they are most likely all below the Mactaquac damn. I have never heard of any caught above the dam.
What part of newbrunswick is it in, close to plaster rock or Woodstock newbrunswick I can’t find were to catch stergion near me
@@EpicBradyOffical this is down near Saint John. A place called sturgeon alley.
I should have went left instead of right lol
@@relentlessobsession9705 so many decisions! I always think so much after a tournament about what I did and how I could have changed it.
@@travismelanson I kinda went exploring and found lots of useful information under right situations. So a win for me lol
@@relentlessobsession9705 yep! Good for the future. I just burn so much time on the sturgeon lottery….lol
Nice day with a great variety of species! You allowed to use bait in the tournaments Travis?
@@MasterCrowOutdoors it was a nice day. We are allowed to use bait as long as it adheres to the fishing regulations. Normally people just use crawlers for some of the bottom feeders (sturgeon and cats)
Looks fun. I'll be joining you guys soon.

@@adamdevries8121 the 106 MK is actually really light. I’ve owned the 120 as well and it is enjoyable. If you want a motor go with the 106 MK. If you want to save your money, get the sportsman 106 (pedals). I’m 6’2” so I like longer kayaks.

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it. Once you start let me know and I’d love to check it out.
Nice man, do you have the steering locked? I was thinking about adding a torqueedo off of a side plate like that, really don’t want to mess with my rudder lines. but wondering if it wonders to the right or left. How’s your speed and battery?
Yes, the motor stays locked. It does not go offside or anything at all. It does make it hard to steer at high speeds. I get about 8.5 km/hr
Nice video man!
Thanks man! Appreciate it.
Nice body of water to explore and looks like a lot of different species in there. Couple of good days on the water!

@@travismelanson yeah, I loved lake utopia, we all should vote that next year
any chance you could provide a parts list and links to these things? This is awesome.
Anything in particular you wanted to know about feel free to ask. I can let you know what it is and if it’s custom.
How do I get one of those custom mounts. :-)
@@justinwall6131 the mount for the NK 180 and the micro power pole is 3/8ths aluminum plate. I think it’s a 5 inch wide, and I forget the length. I could give you the dimension of the length if you want to build one yourself.
That was an awesome kayak build. I hope I can get a nice kayak like that too. You should really try bellile Bay in New Brunswick. It is full of bass smallmouth. Pickerel you name it.
I haven’t fished that area before, but I’m sure I will some day! Thanks for the nice comment on the build!
Travis that is a sweet setup you have there my friend! Really like the upgraded aluminum plate. Does Old Town still void your warranty if you drill through the hull?
I don’t know the exact answer Matt, all I can say is that the old town customer service is phenomenal and super supportive of their products. Each time I have had to call they have helped me out.
Hey, I recognized those waters.
I bet. I do have the river name in the title. But do you know what section it is?
@@travismelanson Well I see the the Saint John river in a few shots since I also see the PM. Plus I see the old train bridge from Devon to Barkers Point (Hammer Town). Also you are close to where the Irving tank farm use to be. Narrow areas, I am not sure. Kaine Creek or other areas close by maybe.
Do you have an instagram page
Yep. @melanson.travis
Love to see the kayak on the Chi chasing stripers! Managed to get up there a few times this Spring and plan on making a Fall run as well. Are you allowed to run more than one line in the tournament Travis , or limited to one?
We follow the rules of the water body we are on. So we must comply with that. Some areas we can have two lines in, but I normally stick with just one line. Better for the fish and my brain. Haha.
@@travismelanson 10-4!
