Dorney Park Speedway | Pennsylvania's Lost Speedways
In this video we explore the life of a race track inside an amusement park: Dorney Park Speedway. This track had a long, diverse life of racing which came to an end in the 1980's. Converted from a softball diamond, eventually being torn down and replaced by a roller coaster. Check out the video to see the story and some famous names who raced at Dorney Park!

In this video, we visit a space where it would be hard to tell... once there sat a dirt track. In Camp Hill, there's a small neighborhood referred to as "White Hill" where White Hill Speedway once sat. While there is not a ton of information or remanence of the track, it's in the heart of a suburban area that many of our local racing fans may be familiar with. Hope you are all enjoying the vide...

In this video we walk through the history of one of PA's two board tracks: Uniontown Speedway in Hopwood. This track was part of the boom of motorsport which took place on superspeedways made from wood, a phenom of the 1920's and 1930's. This track was a big part in making auto racing famous in America, it was the first to have regular premieres of footage from its races shown in movie theatres...

Don't confuse this with the drag strip, this is a dirt oval which raced midgets just outside of Lancaster city!!!!! The park we visit in this video was once a hustling dirt track around the outside of a football field, where races were held from the 1930's all the way to the early 1950's. The amount of resources and info out there that you aren't uncovering because you're obviously just googling is incredible. I also would further wager that you ChatGPt'ed the script youre reading off.

      Sorry your experience wasn’t what you expected, doing 10 of these a year on top of all my other responsibilities limits me. This is not my job, this is a passion project. I don’t use AI, only a few times at work. AI can be a great tool to uncover more information so maybe I should have seen what details ChatGPT could’ve added. There’s no reason to use AI to create something if the goal is to have fun making it. If you watch other videos in this series I regularly admit to not finding more information in my research, my main focus is awareness and I often get comments from people who recount more information than what I provide. That, to me, is really cool. If you have more information on the track, add it in and I alongside other viewers can learn more. Hell, take your information and remake this video with it if there’s so much to be said. Your comment is cynical for no reason. I do this because it’s interesting, you could take the time to share and educate others instead of making allegations against me like that. Or don’t waste your time watching the video if you don’t like it. I don’t appreciate it, but I will forgive you.

    They would unload the race cars at the train station in Uniontown and drive them up Rt40 to the track. As the track aged upkeep was less than stellar. In the later years of it they would not replace the 2x4's frequently enough. Boards would splinter and break. Alot of splinters would poke holes in the car's radiators. Also, drivers had to avoid unpaying kid spectators who would poke their heads up through these holes in the track (while the race was happening!).

      No, that was the dirt track above old Kennedy Elementary school, the school is now a senior care facility or something like that, the Guseman family owned that race track and had bought the land for it off of my family, after racing was stopped there due to the death of the owners son it was turned into a softball field in the 70's, I used to attend games there as a kid, from what I understand that race track had been a small dirt track midget cars were raced on, it wasn't very big. My grandfather sold the Guseman brother who owned the track, and whose son was killed, the land for it not long after WW2, it was a relatively small plot of land immediately adjacent to the land Kennedy Elementary school was built on which my grandfather had sold to the school district for the school, they were both cut out of the land comprising my family's farm, Craig Farm located on Craig Lane, part of the deal was that my grandfather and his family had free access to the races, my father and uncle used to attend the races there all the time as high school kids. The Guseman's also owned Mid Town Motel that was on Rt 40 about half way between Uniontown and Brownsville, Junior Guseman (I might be spelling their last name incorrectly as I never saw it written and only ever heard it spoken) who was the son of the brother who owned Mid Town Motel and worked there for pretty much all his life was a friend of mine back in the day (it was his uncles kid, what would have been Juniors cousin had he lived long enough, that was killed), we'd occasionally do some motorcycle riding and bar hopping together, he was a real blast to be around, funny as the day was long, I lived in Ohio for 11 years having moved back in 2019 and as I recall heard Junior passed away while I was living in Ohio. A few corrections about this video, Carl Laemmie, the founder of Universal Pictures and part owner of the board track, was one of the investors who had the track built, the story about the actress getting him to invest in the track is probably the other way around, he'd been involved with the Summit Hill Climb race, he and George Titlow, builder of the Titlow Hotel (now known by many as the Highland House Bar) became acquainted when Laemmie had come to stay at the Titlow Hotel which was a renowned luxury Hotel at the time (in that era because of the coal barons Uniontown had more registered millionaires per capita than any other community in America including NYC) they were both racing enthusiasts and started the Summit Mountain race which ran for 2 or 3 years before the county fathers shut it down citing safety reasons, so they had the board track built just a half mile or so from the base of the mountain in Hopwood, Laemmie filming the races and showing them between films in his theaters made it the most famous race track in America at the time, America's wealthiest people and even royalty from Europe would attend races there, these were people who'd come to stay at the luxurious Titlow Hotel also, Laemmie and Titlow had a good thing going at the time, what caused the closure of the track, the final straw after several bad incidents through the years was a car got that lost control and got down into the pits killing 3 mechanics, after that the county fathers had it shut down by refusing to renew permits or however they used their bureaucratic powers to do it, after that all the famous racers started concentrating on racing at Indianapolis. So at first instead of the Pikes Peak race it was almost the Summit Mountain race, and then instead of Indianapolis being the most famous race in America it was almost Uniontown (they probably would have built a paved track in its place when board track racing went out of favor), bit both opportunities were squandered by the short sighted county officials who saw racing as a dangerous novelty in an area infested with wealth from the coal and coke industry. I grew up just up the road from where the track was, about ¾ths of a mile up Rt 40 just before it goes into Uniontown in the neighborhood on the hill above Pappys, in the 70's and early 80's I used to drive golf balls at Gabby's Driving Range which was on the property where the track was, now it's a veterinarian's office or something, I don't know as I hardly pay attention anymore when I drive past, also the track he talks about that was half paved and half dirt that had races there in the years after WW2 inspired the name of a bar, The Speedway, that used to be right across the road and was still open into the 80's.

    I have read a few articles about board racing. Those men who dove them truly had balls of steel. I think Altoona Pa. had a board track back in the 10's and 20's (maybe?). From what I've read, some of the tracks that sprung up back then were banked at 60 degrees!!! And most of them had speeds top out at more than 100 mph. By today's standards, that may not sound real fast, but back then it was a spectators delight. Thanks again Joe, keep up the fantastic work!

    • @joedonohue947
      @joedonohue947 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're right Michael, Altoona did have a board track in the 20's! There were a lot of world famous drivers who raced there as well, and a couple who lost their lives. The board tracks were a huge part of the auto industry back in the day and created a very dangerous sphere for racing to grow in. Unlike anything we would have today with our safety standards. As always, thank you for your kind words and support!

    I helped flag the 1st 4 years and was a photographer until the track no longer ran. The resident across the street complained about the noise ,even when there was no racing. It could be reopened by approval of the Fair Board ,but the cost to redo the speedway would be quite expensive. I was a member of the Reading Fairgrounds Racing Historical Society and they were in charge of running the events.

    Way too many good race tracks have been shut down for some reason. The old Reading Fairgrounds Speedway shouldn't have ever been closed. It was a half mile dirt oval with lots of room to race. That old track did attract big name drivers like Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt. I think this Shelhammers Speedway in Leesport Berks County Pa is still operating. I know GRANDVIEW Speedway in Becktelsville Pa (another Berks County track) is still going strong it has been for over about 61 years. GRANDVIEW Speedway is a 1/3 mile high banked dirt track that run on Saturday Night from April to mid September featuring the NASCAR WEEKLY RACING SERIES 358 inch Small Block Modifieds and the NASCAR SPORTSMEN MODIFIEDS. The address there is 43 Passmore Rd, Bectelsville, Pa
