How peak levels alter Spotify streaming
Let's analyse the impact of peak levels during Ogg Vorbis conversion
More on peaks? th-cam.com/video/0l0JRQLWLUs/w-d-xo.html
In this video i'll dive into the impact of peak levels (-1dBTP or 0dBTP) when converting audio files to Ogg Vorbis format. Why? Because Spotify uses VBR Ogg Vorbis music for their streams so understanding this impact might shift the way you master your music if intended for Spotify playback.
Track: Fernie - Impulse (initiate records)
What are the impacts of peak levels on audio files both uncompressed and MP3 compressed. How to finally properly choose for you desired audio loudness output.
0dBTP ? -1dBTP ? More or less? Stop guessing, I went trough a deep test and made my own conclusion but don't take my word and download the audio files to listen by yourself and compare the effects of clipping and output levels on compressed and uncompressed audio files

    I think that wat ppl dont realize is your track is not a sine wave its full of different volumes and transients you can let a lot of the transients go past zero and they sound quite good but the solid bass of the bass guitar needs to stay at or below zero or it gets all fuzzy

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Durkhead totally agreed. In my field of music tracks are usually heavy loaded low end and as more and more producers use samples from heavily processes packs, these tend to ba all very very compressed/limited/clipped. So the resul is less very sharp and high end transients. Part of the reasons I barely use clippers (and when i do they barely shave off thins) in mastering as they usually don't du justice to these tracks and quickly distort on the long low end content.

    Thank you for such an in depth video, it really opened my eyes when it comes to different styles of music and how it correlates with mp3 conversion and encoders. I do have a question - when you export an mp3 file, do you export straight from Ableton, or export a wav file and then use the software you showed (NCH)? If yes, is there a specific reason, or? Much appreciated, looking forward to your response!

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well your question was spot on! from what i read both switch and ableton use LAME mp3 encoder. I didn't compare switch exports vs ableton's. That's what i was willing to do next (as it's more handy to bounce directly both .wav and .mp3 from ableton).

    To me the most annoying thing in this hihat is the frequency content portion of it that sounds like a dull 808 clap-noise. Also timing wise it feels a bit too late. A bit like blues. That decelerates the feeling of the beat for me and steals it a bit of push forward energy- makes it laggy I once hade a similar issue a few years back and one thing that worked nice for my taste was, i used the PEEL plugin, isolated the problematic element and then phase inverted the track and mixed it back in under the original mix . I found the result very organic even if it wasn`t perfect. I enjoy your videos man. Keep it up!

    Spectral mode is in my opinion simply lowering the peaks. So when you selected a broad band around 2:25 it is lowering the peaks in the lows because these are the most resonant (peaking).

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio หลายเดือนก่อน

      @MarcoRaaphorst it is but different tools use different ways to achieve this, this is what I'm highlighting in this example. Some (like pro q) seem to be using white noise target but ozone (clarity module) for example allows you to shift the weighting from white to brown noise (meaning less processing in the low end) while soothe2 seems to use more a "transient" approach by band (which makes sense to target resonances and not tonal balance). I realize this wasn't explained clearly as i already had a comment just earlier about the same part of the video...

  • @niklassilen4313
    @niklassilen4313 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you want "Soothe" like processing, you simply use several bands as each of them get their own threshold and own attack/release. How do you miss that? You can even set up your own custom weighting in a single preset.. then select all EQ nodes with the box select and adjust the amount of all together. Then it works pretty much exactly like Soothe, if that's what you are after. However, keep in mind that Soothe is a bit more than just simple resonance suppression based on a target curve. The way Soothe determines what is processed has a lot to do with it's 'selectivity' control. It's quite a lot more complex than the Pro-Q4 solution. Thus these two plugins do not cancel each other out.. but you DO get very granular control of specific ranges in Pro-Q4, even more so than in Soothe (where it can be difficult to setup super tight ranges.

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio หลายเดือนก่อน

      @niklassilen4313 maybe I didn't express myself correctly, of course you can setup different points but the way it analyzes what's in a selected point/band is pretty different from soothe that's what I wanted to highlight while making one big band of action. As I said also when I use soothe I usually use different instances for different regions (so more plugins to load) while here you can do all this within one instance of pro q 4(with different selectivity/density and time constants). The analysis process although seems different and less useful to me and you don't have "selectivity" as in soothe. Also you can setup very tight ranges with soothe. As I said in my conclusion, pro q3 was already an amazing tool and this is a great upgrade but having split eq, ozone eq, kirchhoff and soothe2 i don't see pro q4 replacing any of those in these specific tasks. If you don't have any of those then it's a no brainer and pro q4 is deffo a tool to get.

    • @niklassilen4313
      @niklassilen4313 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @incidence.studio Ah yes, now I understand what you were trying to say. And I agree. It would be cool if there was one more slider beneath the density slider that was a "weighting" tilt kind of thing. That would indeed be useful!

  • @incidence.studio
    @incidence.studio หลายเดือนก่อน

    My bad i just realised i missed the "free" mode for dynamic process (as possible in pro-MB) so one party of the spectrum controls the action on another part of the spectrum (like for example pushing the high-mids to enhance the snap when the low-end of a kick is playing)

    After 3 decades at it, I confidently say that the VSTs are about 50-70% as effective as the hardware equivalents, typically You'll help your ear and workflow much more using a single dbx or FMR unit for a few hundred bucks, vs what 1000s of VSTs can tell you about the sound. Weird, but true. Like anything in life, learn by DOING. Code is just code , and when it is all shoved through the same D/A circuit _it all tends to sound similar (!)_

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio หลายเดือนก่อน

      thanks again for watching this other video, but again i don't understand what your comment has to do with the topic. we're not discussing analog/hardware vs. plugins here... You might prefer an hardware opto comp to a vst emulation and that's fine . This doesn't take away that opto has another attitude than vari-mu or FET and this is true in hardware and software emulations. My purpose here is to help people understand those differences in order to better choose the right tool for the job. This being said i quite strongly disagree with the statement of vst being 50 to 70% as effective as hardware otherwise how would you explain worldwide known mastering engineers working daily switching to 100% ITB? Also workflow is way easier on soft vs hardware (not only for cables, interfaces,... but simply on the exact recall because only a few hardware developers now provide digital control/recall of their hardware) but then again this is off topic...

    The lookahead of Pro-C has a “pre-ducking” effect on the attack, so be careful when pulling the lookahead too far as you will be getting an unrealistic compression algorithm that cannot be compared to any normal compressor. Yes it has no THD but it also has a pre-transient knee, unlike normal compressors.

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      i really don't understand what you mean with "pre-transient knee"... lookahead basically "reads" the audio signal erlier to allow compression to start increasing before the actual peak occurs in the processed audio. Interesting info, been struggling with the ideal settings for bass compression, and some of the compressors i'm using dont have a lookahead in them like kush ones or Omnipressor, Can you take a listen the bass in Yello's track Time Tunnel and let me know what you hear in that.

    • @incidence.studio

      you can always drop whatever compressor you're using into plugin doctor to see how it behaves (when it starts adding loads of harmonics) I checked yello (could only find a live version). From what i hear there it's mostly a sidechain compressor coming from the kick (and where kick level is not the same at every hit so the amount of sidechain compression is not the same every hit either).

Also, often in compressors, the detector’s release time isn’t taken into account, which also affects the transient and sustain. Therefore, all the calculations made by those who considered this in milliseconds may not make sense, or the detector's release time should also be considered.

    The arp sound you experiment with at 28:00 minutes and later on, feels like it would like to be turned down by 3-4 db and would be curious how it sound then. It feels too upfront for the mix. Dunno how do describe it better in a few text words

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally right ! Tbh if it was a real track it would have received much more processing to give it some movement (for example filter moves and decays automations). I didn't plan to add that sound but while recording the video I felt like also showing how two sounds can be first panned then merged in a group and processed together to fit better in the stereo field. The whole loop here is in fact pretty rough and unmixed. Just talking about stereo approaches ;)

    Overshoot occurs when using linear-phase filters during oversampling. If minimum-phase or regular filters are used, this overshoot won't happen. In Standard Clip, a two-stage clipping process is applied. The first clipper can target lower levels of the signal, where oversampling is necessary to prevent aliasing. The output clipper, placed at the end of the plugin chain, does not include oversampling, as its primary purpose is to catch and cut short, non-tonal peaks in the signal, which is a logical approach

    I never really got the point of making club music loud for DJ's. DJ's have a mixer with faders, right? I understand that you'd want that agressive vibe of a limited mix, but the argument of making a loud master for competitiveness sounds really weird to me.

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Several reasons : 1) If everything is mastered accordingly, you don't need to touch the gain and your tracks will all blend together smoothly (in terms of loudness) 2) Many dj mixers are digital, if you clip the input by pushing the gain (in the analog domain before the conversion) to add a lot of unwanted THD. Years ago mixers were all analog and could take less cautious manipulation and a bit of overdrive, in the digital world this is a very delicate aspect and i think it's best actually dj's stay away from the gain. 3) if you have a louder track and want to match the next one (quieter one) and need to push the gain to match the previous one's loudness, as everything is peaking close to 0dBFS you'll end up clipping the quieter track A LOT!!! 4) staying away from the gain knob is also avoiding the sneaky risk of willing to push things louder from track to track (it's a natural process that happens even more if the dj is insecure) and every time you feel a bit risqky during a transition you'll end up pushing that gain a lil bit more, until you're maxed out (believe me i worked as sound engineer in Fuse Club brussels for over 3 years and it's something that happens even if the dj's should not have to touch the gain). 5) Club and festival PA's have limiters to protect the sound system, so even if the dj was to use a rane or xone analog mixer, if the PA is close to be maxxed out, by pushing the gain of a "peaky" /higher crest-factor track, those peaks will end up being clipped/limited by the PA's protection circuit. Trust me a properly limited master will always sound better than those "protection limiters" Hope this helps understand the reason why it's still relevant in this case and why playing with gain to match tracks with different loudness is not a good option.

      These are all familiar points, and I trust your experience. But it all boils down to not trusting DJ’s as capable professionals. If setting up gain staging between the line input and the fader is already too much.. oof! You’re probably right, but it feels weird to prepare a master for amateur DJ’s as the main audience. I’ve heard good DJ’s (not talking about myself!) mix records from the 60ies with loud club masters on the usual DJM mixers, it is still possible to do that perfectly smooth.

      @@LYFoulidis sadly "gain" control is indeed an aspect that is often overlooked (or badly understood) by many... yet even with high attention and care if you try to match the loudness of a very dynamic 60's track on vinyl with a cd from something like actual EDM, if ever you have enough gain on the mixer to get the same loudness ballpark, your peaks would kill any DJM mixer :p (and don't even get me started on the more than ultra shitty curve of gain progression on those a$$ DJM mixers :p ) cheers mate and glad to see another "spaghetti lover and knobs fiddler" here ;)

      Ha, talking about gainstaging the spaghetti is on a whole other level with its lack of standards 😉 Thanks for your thoughtful answer :)

    The most difficult thing a developer can achieve is absolute transparency. An ideal limiter should neither colour nor distort. It is well known that Limitless is the best in this respect and is therefore used by many mastering engineers. The question is: Is it still better than Limitone? I would appreciate a more detailed comparison between the two. Pro-L2 and all the others are good, but not like Limitless.

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Hasan-bl3fo IMHO the beauty of LimitOne is the blend from transparent to a more gritty sound that is just another layer of "texturing"(or not) your sound in a very smooth and progressive way. I don't see it as better or worse I see it as a tool to grab if ever the mix received is a bit too sterile and your usual coloring tools don't get the job nailed, it's another tool in the toolbox to go towards a desired goal

    Thats a deep subject. When i was starting years ago i started tuning everything but as time passed by and i got my own experience and opinion i realised that i had the wrong idea, meaning i was always trying to tune the kick and the bass to the same root. Then you realize that a kick is not always playing the same part-importance. Also sometimes if you have a very short kick such as an acoustic kick, you can get away with more „not tuned“ behavior. It even creates interesting ripples in the Bassline fabric. Other times there is no way around it and you need to tune them. However you can also tune a set in a „Chord“ mentality where each drum and the bass all have their portion of the Chord. The kick does not always have to be the same root as the bassline. I know many already know all of this but i am talking to my younger self. Interesting video as always my friend. Keep the content coming and i hope the channel blows up soon. Its a good one

    • @incidence.studio
      @incidence.studio 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      indeed subject is deep and rules are meant to be broken it's just interesting to think that if you don't do things carefully (understand paying attention to the phase) tuning might in fact add more problems than when not tuning. Writing this down here i realise this should have been said more clearly in my video :p Thanks again for your kind words and support in regard of this channel! cheers!

    Part 1: Its all good. I still enjoyed the video. Because i own Limitless and in this case know how different the modes can be this is why i wondered what you used. For example Aggressive vs Transparent is like using a different plugin. Its that big of a difference. It is impossible to show all aspects of every plugins in shoot outs like this i know or else the video will be days long.
