Night time solo docking. 3 things I didn't do quite right. 1 - too slow. Barely had rudder authority, 2 - didn't realize how much tidal flow was affecting the boat, 3 - unintentionally left boat in idle forward. fortunately non-caused a serious problem because I reated before they did cause a problem. I realized that boat was in idle forward before leaving the cockpit to attach the midship aft ...

    Thx for the vid. Things I would do different.... single handed: - I never dock barefoot, - put away all the seat cushions, - keep working space (cockpit) nice and clean - prepare all the tools I probably will need during docking Ropes, boathook, etc. - while entering the berth with 1-2 kn, put gear in neutral. - half boat length away I put gear into forward, but continue to steer in reverse (advantage, the boat will slow down slowly until it stops) - put gear in neutral when the boat stops - throw your lines (midship, or stern) over the dock-cleats and put again into forward gear, to hold the boat against the dock Regards ah

      @@sailingin-tuitionwithchuckthx for your reply. The most important advice imo: don't wait until the end to stop the boat with a push forward. Try to put into forward gear and continue to steer stern-to. You will experience a better docking, smother and much better control. Greetings from good old Germany ah

      I think when to apply forward throttle and how much will depend on wind direction and speed. I often have wind from the south (port beam) which quickly blows me off. I have to carry a certain amount of speed to get into my oversized slip without getting blown off before I get in or off to the starboard away from my finger pier.

    I noticed the front rudder / board was only partially lifted, was this intentional?

    • @sailingin-tuitionwithchuck
      @sailingin-tuitionwithchuck หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. The main hull has two retractable rudders; one at each end. When under way, the "aft" rudder is used and the "bow" rudder is retracted.

    • @markthomasson5077
      @markthomasson5077 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ of course, but in the video the forward rudder looked to be only lifted about 6” rather than fully lifted as I have seen elsewhere. I did hear that the front one is sometimes lowered for sail balance I am considering building one.

    Thanks for sharing @sailingin-tuitionwithchuck. One change that made a huge difference for me when sailing solo was setting up the outhaul line for the mainsail next to the loop lines on the port deck clutches and winch. Now I can easily control both lines from the port side in the cockpit, winching the outhaul with one hand while managing the loop lines with the other-without needing to move around at all. Working in 20 cm increments on the outhaul helped, and marking reefing positions on the boom has been a game-changer too. Also try the outhaul with the wind from the stern, controlling loop and outhaul on a broadreach start course, boom always on port of course. Would love to see your technique for in-mast furling next time! Cheers

    Have you had any trouble with your in mast furling?

    • @sailingin-tuitionwithchuck
      @sailingin-tuitionwithchuck 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      None that were attributable to the furling system. My mainsail is original and starting bag. That may eventually cause the sail to bind. But i don't count that as an issue with the selden system. If I ever bought another boat, I would want the selden system again.

      In addition to ease of use and convenience, I think infinite reefing/furling options is such a great benefit. I essentially furl to keep the boat to about 15 degrees of heel. I can easily let a little out or take a little in. I think this minimizes overall stress on the boat

    Chuck, a couple of comments; 1) The difference in the breakers is that one is a "low amp" breaker and the other a "high amp" breaker. The purpose of the breakers is to protect the wires from overheating so the windlass motor requiring high amps requires a much thicker gauge of wire to carry the amps and thus a high amp breaker. Both systems are 12V. The reason for running the motor while using the windlass is to provide additional amps from the alternator rather than just the house battery. 2) Paint the toggle of the motor breaker Yellow or Red so it is clearly visible that it has tripped. This allows you to advise the crew to nip down below and reset the "yellow thang" 3).Would also recommend you learn how to release the windlass capstan/wildcat manually and how to raise it manually. There is typically a tool or long bar that fits in the windlass for such an emergency. 4) Finally if all else fails, you can raise the anchor by tying a rolling hitch knot on the chain and leading the line back to one of your winches to raise the chain. It will be slow going and several rinse and repeats of retying the knot and stowing the chain, but it will save your back.
