I get emotional seeing Jerry. He-his music- has been such a part of my life.

Goldsmith’s score was just too good for the movie. It’s not a very good film and that’s what people were reacting to. But because the studio heads started panicking they monkeyed around with the only things they could in post production which was the editing and the music.

terrific to see the master at work. This film is blessed by one of his most sublime Main Title`s. Great score, great composer.

It speaks for the quality of this documentary to have the most influential and most prolific film compsoer covered in only about two minutes.

As another response says, the Goldsmith score progresses, getting darker along with the story. Goldsmith's score elevates the movie. I like Tangerine Dream very much, but the score here, while servicable, is almost afraid to go too far. The Goldsmith is bold; the replacement just kinda there.

James Newton Howard won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music - Gideon's Crossing. James Newton Howard began studying music as a child, taking classical piano lessons at the age of four. He went on to attend the Thacher School in Ojai, California and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California with Reginald Stewart and Leon Fleischer. He then attended the University of Southern California, studying at the School of Music as a piano performance major, but dropped out after 6 weeks because "He wanted to do other things than practicing the piano." After Howard left college, he joined a short-lived rock band called Mama Lion. The band was led by Neil Merryweather (bass, backing vocals) and featured lead singer Lynn Carey, Coffi Hall on drums, and Rick Gaxiola on guitar. Mama Lion recorded two full-length albums. Members of Mama Lion also formed the band Heavy Cruiser with Merryweather now on lead vocals, recording two albums whose genre was closer to hard rock but also displayed psychedelic and progressive influences. He then worked for a couple of years as a session musician with artists including Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, and Harry Nilsson. In the early 70s, he described himself as being "dirt poor", until his big break in 1975 when his manager got him an audition with Elton John. He joined John's band and toured with them as keyboardist during the late 70s and early 80s. He was part of the band that played Central Park, New York, on September 13, 1980

What a weak fumble where the meaning is unable to support the sentence's hyperbole - - "absolutely the most" - - diluted down to nothing by qualifiers - - "on mainstream movies" & as if that wasn't enough of a stepdown - - "on a regular basis." Composers in fringe movies would be hardpressed to come up with melodic innovations to rival Goldsmith. Composers who didn't compose for movies on a regular basis - - Leonard Bernstein, say - - would be hardpressed to rival Goldsmith's innovations either. When did soundbites in documentaries become this stooopid? It's been a dumbed-down feature in documentaries for decades now,.

I got to meet Mr. Goldsmith backstage after a concert in OKC-Nov. 1983. He was very polite and happily signed my program. A very happy memory.

His Poltergeist scores are beautiful, epic and at the same time terrifying. Too bad he wasn't available (or too expensive) for Poltergeist III.

Echoing Geronimo_Jehoshaphat before me, VERY underrated composer. While I do love a couple of his earlier scores (specifically "The Dark Crystal") I really feel like he reached his peak in the '90s-'00s with "Gulliver's Travels," "Merlin," and "Dinotopia." They are the three Jones scores I go back to the most often, and they work so well with the style of Hallmark's miniseries at the time - "Dinotopia" the miniseries is definitely, in my opinion, the weakest of the three (I mean, basically NONE of its main characters are likeable, for different reasons) I still enjoy watching it, but probably a big part of that is because of the score. That felt like such a sort of magical time in my childhood, that decade where Hallmark was really getting into big, adventurous (and ambitious) miniseries events; I remember waiting anxiously every year for an announcement of what they're next project would be, and then my sister and I would watch them as they premiered and record them on VHS, then watch all of them almost every Summer - while Jones didn't score ALL of them, even the others had superb scores by their respective composers; Richard Harvey's "Arabian Nights" makes such beautiful use of classic "Middle Eastern" harmonic/double harmonic scales; Anne Dudley excelled (in my opinion) with "The 10th Kingdom"; Rupert Gregson-Williams' phenomenal harp piece in "Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story"; and Ralf Wienrich did a really great job of channeling the classic "Williamsian"/Indiana Jones feel with his score for "Coronado" (though some of it does border on "plagiaristic," but it's still a fun listen and homage). So many great scores during that period of time where Hallmark was churning out these mega-production miniseries.

It's heartwarming and tragic. Jurassic Park left Sony for Abbey Road- at least Michael went out with a bang the last time they did it there.

Goldsmith's score added so much more to the film than Tangerine Dream's. I like Tangerine Dream, but I didn't think they were a good fit for Legend.

*The* Master Scorer -- and few people seem to grasp why: because of the thematic synergy that he bestowed on almost every film that he scored, for the sake of helping to reflect upon and convey the spiritual essence of a movie at every turn. Architecturally, the anti-Steiner, the anti-Korngold, the anti-Williams -- Jerry sought to tie everything together musically rather than dissect it apart, to complement the organic nature of a picture. A movie is a total, relational whole -- so, Jerry astutely reasoned, its score should be too.

Maestro Kamen is missed.
