I feel it’s a yes and no which basically means a balance. Improvisation is okay if: 1. Sticks to the DNA of the song or arrangement 2. Generally sounds like what was rehearsed The main thing is that you don’t want to throw the band or the song leader off at any point in time. I call it rehearsed improvisation which is an interesting oxymoron.
