Special Guest, Overnighter - IAT | Chippewa Cnty Forest
Finally shot another video since my thru hike attempt last year. Denim and I head out in the woods with a special guess. Check it out to see who joined us! We did 5 1/2 miles the first day and then woke up and finished up with a 1 1/2 out. Chippewa Moraine and Hardwoodlakes segments of the Ice Age Trail.
Keep following for more hikes this fall. I am planning part of the North Country Scenic Trail and another undecided chunk of Trail as well. Leave some comments if you have any suggestions around the Midwest area!
Enjoy!

Episode 8: Made It To The Mammoth | IAT Thru Hike Attempt
มุมมอง 3535 ปีที่แล้ว
After leaving Lodi I had to road walk in a rain storm to make it eventually to Indian Lake County Park. Super nice bathroom and pavilion set up there that allowed me to dry out in the rain. And charge my devices! Then made it to cross plains and visited the IAT headquarters office. They were super awesome! I got a shower and washed my clothes there. Then I got to sit around and talk hiking over...

Winter Camp at Highland Lake
มุมมอง 1856 ปีที่แล้ว
Mike and Justin on an overnight winter camping at Highland Lake in the Chippewa County Forest. When my front tooth was broke and I really looked like a hill billy.
Nice video. Thanks for posting.
So absolutely cool that you got to have Denim join you on the trail. Best thing I have seen in a long time. Thanks for sharing guys!
He’s the true star of any videos I post🤣 Definitely some of the best days on trail when he got to come out with me. Thanks for watching!!
Enjoyed your time with your son on the IAT and Chippewa county...wish my boys were still that age
Thank you for sharing. Denim was the star of the video. I love the IAT.
Is this the last video in the series?
Jonathan Scott unfortunately so. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t finish. Kinda fell apart at the end. Loneliness, money, road walks hah. I had intended to pick back up this spring and finish it out but that fell through. With everything going on. Thanks for watching these and stay tuned though. I’ll have some shorter thru hikes next spring and 2022 or 23 I’m planning my vengeance for this trail. And I will make it the entire way. With my golden pup Bella too. And hopefully have a new series for you:)
Awesome man! Haven’t taken my little guy out on a backpacking trip yet. He comes on a bunch of my day hikes and has been car camping a few times. I think next year is the year. At least an overnighter at a shelter on the IAT in kettle moraine somewhere. It’s hard to judge the miles he’s got in him. He’s done 10 mile days with me and other days he’s ready to turn around after a mile or two.
I can say after a 5.5 mile day, my kiddo was pooped out! But like you said it’s random. Last year on my IAT thru Hike Attempt, he hiked a few days with me and did as many as 8 miles in a single day. Easier terrain. But then he had to leave a day early because the heat and elevation increased and he was getting spent. So haha, yeah just start with an Overnighter, get his pack weight light, and you guys will have a blast. Especially if you have an entire day to just mosey along the trail, taking breaks and do some exploring! Here’s when he came with me down by Devil’s Lake State Park, if you haven’t checked it out yet. th-cam.com/video/_ChjWQ-M3rw/w-d-xo.html
Did you drop one off in that gray box? I didn't know they had boxes like that scattered in the forest
Jake Graskey I wouldn’t pass one up!!
My son and I just hiked the eastern Lodi Marsh segment, and it was gorgeous. Definitely one of my favorite hikes in Wisconsin.
Laura Berkholtz I remember coming up to a prairie on top of a high point with the sun in its setting phase and remember thinking how beautiful. It really is! Thanks for sharing, I bet it was nice to get.
IAT vids are hard to come by. Yours is much better than a few others I've seen. You took your time and got some nice shots. Looking forward to watching the rest of your series.
Ruff Hikes I didn’t have much experience filming or editing or anything like that. Just picked it up as I went along so I appreciate your comment. :)Im hoping to get back out there in 2020 so that’ll be something to look forward to. Thanks again!!
Saw your entry in the Lodi segment trail register. Thanks for sharing - always good to see some local content!
Matt Hoyt Thanks for checking it out! The Lodi Marsh segments specifically were really beautiful. And a great DCA there!
Just Beyond the Trailhead agreed!
Beautiful vidios. Thank you for sharing and it's super cool that you took your son along for several sections. Wisconsin has many treasures including the IAT.
Lucinda Turnis thanks! It was the most special moments along my journey, bringing him along. Wisconsin might not have mountains, giant redwoods, or oceans but we sure have a lot of beautiful things to see. Most don’t realize it until they see it for themselves! And not to mention wisconsin folks are super friendly!
Will you be back on trail soon?
Unfortunately, not back to the IAT this fall. I’m going to do some little trips around home and see what I can’t squeeze in. Some gear videos too. Otherwise I’m hoping to get back at the IAT this next spring again. Try and finish’er off.
You can tell you’re experienced. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! I’ve done my fair share of research and went on enough weekend hikes, but I still have more to learn! Thanks for watching!!
Good looking quilt you have there! Glad to hear we made the cut!
Thank you guys for the excellent products! I definitely will be doing an awesome review on it, eventually coming up, as it was one of my favorite pieces of gear I had! Haha I sleep with it on my bed at home some nights...
And some how you said cut the cheese without laughing lol curious how much does the pack weigh when packed up?
Right!? Lol non consumables my final weight was 17.4 lbs pack and all. (Not including little trinkets... so maybe 17.6)
Very unique setup. Thanks for sharing
You are a great dad, and the impact you have on your son is unmeasurable! He will remember this forever...as, I'm sure, you will as well.
Thanks! He’s a fun little guy!:)
I was anxiously awaiting your next update. It's been a while so I wondered if something was up. Sorry to hear you had to step away for a bit but you gotta do what you gotta do. I look forward to following along when you pick it up again.
Thanks for your support along the way! It was a hard choice I had to make. But I got to spend a little extra time with the kiddo. Have fun on your section hikes coming up!
We had a scout backpack camporee at Indian lake this spring. It certainly is a very nice park. We didn't make it to the chapel or the overlook but had a couple classes in the warming shack.
You can't begin to imagine how much I enjoy your videos. This is my favorite so far. Denim sure is a character. It makes me really look forward to my first multi-day trip that will kick off my section hike experience. My oldest son who is 16 will be with me and we will be hiking the West half of Mondeaux Esker and the Jerry lake segment and possibly part of Lake Eleven. Later in the fall my youngest son (14) and I will be taking two days and and hiking Harison Hills, Alta Junction, and the connecting route to the Underdown segment. I look forward to your next episode.
Woodwzrd that’s awesome you’re going to do this. First off, the lake eleven Jerry lake and mondeaux Esker segments are probably top favorite on my list. It’s rugged near where the Jerry lake and mondeaux segments connect. You’ll feel quite remote out there. It’s great. And the Harrison hills by lookout mountain is beautiful and the rolling forest hills there are worth noting. Sounds like a great adventure planned! I’m from around the Chippewa Moraine area so be sure to let me know when you decide to take out those segments in the future:)! Thanks for the support!!
@@justbeyondthetrailhead6936 I'm actually in Baraboo now but moved here from Colfax. I've spent some time day hiking in the Chippewa Moraine area. I'll definitely try to reach out when I hike that area.
Looks beautiful out there! Denim sure enjoys the camera! Hope you are well! You are starting to look like a caveman!!! We miss you!! 😃
What a nice treat for you to share with us! A beautiful place and a grand adventure for you both. Thanks!
I love watching trail hiking vlogs and channels. They’ve inspired me to try and hike the IAT in due time. It’s great to see someone thru hiking the whole thing! I’ve completed only the Eastern Terminus to Sturgeon Bay segment, but I’m hopeful to get farther this summer. If you are going to be near the Kewaunee/Algoma sections we will meet you with some trail magic!
That’s awesome!! Keep at it, it’s not always easy but there is new beauty around every corner I’ve come to learn. Even some of the road walks have been breathtaking down south. Glad I can help inspire for people curious about the IAT out there!
Great video thanks for sharing your journey
Thanks for the support. Every little bit helps. Happy trails!:)
Thanks for another video there isn't much out there of the IAT
Are you using Guthook app or any other trail app?
Hey! Yeah I have guthooks. I use it for reference if I need to but mostly the trail is marked so well I don’t need to really. Only problem is my phones GPS doesn’t ping me in the right location as it should. So I don’t use it as a gps but more so a map tool. Have paper atlas’s with me too. Not all of them. My resupply boxes have more paper maps as needed so I don’t carry them all the entire way.
@@justbeyondthetrailhead6936 I hope to put a few steps on it this year myself. Enjoy your hike. Be safe.
Have fun buddy!!!! Great segments in Chippewa county.
Looks like ticks already getting bad there
Yeah I was surprised to find so many. What a nice hot day can do!
Another great video. If you don't have the guthooks app I highly recommend it. Keeps you from guessing which way the trail goes (and works without cell service). Also if you're not a member of the "thousand miler wannabes" facebook group consider joining as there are lots of people ready to provide whatever support, assistance you might need. Happy hiking!
Thanks for the positive feed back!:) I like that. Yes, I have the Guthooks app, and it’s great! Problem is my phones GPS locates me like five / ten miles off my exact location. But to be honest the trails are so well maintained and posted so well I haven’t had any real problems getting lost so far:) nothing I could venture a hundred feet and figure out anyways. Unfortunately, I’m not on Facebook though because that would be helpful. We will see I guess. Thanks again! Glad I could stir up some old memories.
Very well done video. Brings back some good memories. Thanks for sharing.
Nice video! Thanks for taking us along on your hike. I like your Ice Age Trail hat Denim, enjoyed the views and good choice of music. Best of luck to you on your through hike!
awesome. I just started researching hiking the ice age trail. so far you are the only one on utube doing a thru hike. great footage. happy trails.
How heavy is your pack? Are you planning resupply points or jumping on and off the trail?
My original base weight is 18 lbs. but for a short while I had some winter gear w/ me like crampons and some warmer clothes. I just got rid of that stuff thankfully, finally. But I’ve been carrying five days of food currently to save on $$ and then I’m from the state so I have family and friends meeting me to give me my pre made resupply boxes. Mainly for the first third of the trail. The second two thirds I will more so be resupplying in towns as you hit them more often than up in the north woods. I did jump off trail snow storm days though...
The tracks that "slid" down the hill were likely otter or Fischer
Stay warm out there
You got this!! Rooting for you!!
I live in milltown. I walk these trails everyday! Stay warm during this storm!!
Great vid! Music was a bit too loud while you were talking, tho. When you get near Waupaca / Hartman Creek segment , if you need anything I’d be happy to help out!
Thanks for the feed back. Yeah I think I noticed that too in the second half of my video especially! I’ll keep you in mind if I get into a pinch when I’m down by those segments:)
Looks like you two had fun! That tent was nifty! I liked seeing the water and landscape. Definitely capture some wildlife if you get the chance! Good luck on the Ice Age Trail! 👋🏼🤘🏼⛺️🏕
Good luck buddy!!!!!!!!!!
Lucky boy!
