Fixing my mistakes on our DIY treehouse
The treehouse has been done for about a year, but now I have time to go back and fix all of the problems that I found. A lot of lessons learned, but now we hope the big issues are taken care of.

Making owl nest boxes, which should be called treehouses for birds
During construction of our DIY family treehouse, we ended up with a lot of scraps and extra wood. Mostly cedar and perfectly usable for small projects, This was our process to build a series of nest boxes for owls and bonus boxes for other birds.

DIY Family Treehouse Build: Part 6 | Interior finishes and scrap wood art

The cedar tongue and groove interior is finally finished. The wood had lots of knots and imperfections throughout the build, so we decided to make something that would make the interior look even better and be a reminder of materials we used during the project. DIY Family Treehouse Build: Part 5 | Raising supplies and a firewood shed
This video is a couple of side projects. We decided to try and set up a box that could be pulled up to the deck with drinks and supplies so that it wouldn't be necessary to climb the ship ladder with one hand while carrying stuff up the ladder. It's still a work in progress. It was also time to organize and use up some leftover materials by making a wood shed. Full playlist: th-cam.com/play/PLd...
DIY Family Treehouse Build: Part 4 | Wall insulation and a scrap wood fire
Another weekend with on and off rain. I worked on a few last things before we can start the interior wood paneling, like electrical conduit and insulation. For now the insulation won't be that important since we don't have plans to have any heat at first, but it may be something we add in the future. During a rainy weekend, we got close to finishing the exterior and deck, and finally started work on the interior finishes. We installed hardwood flooring inside, using thermally modified oak that is processed with heat to resist rot. DIY Family Treehouse Build: Part 2 | Treehouse bar (for the kids...)
We have had a few nervous work days where we wished the deck railing was done, so this was the priority for the new year. We added a custom bar top to one side of the railing with a fantastic view overlooking the ravine. The days shown are approximate full work days even though I often work a few hours at a time. New plans for a cabin, waiting to finish the treehouse, and other projects this year.

Our break from working on the treehouse is almost over. While the last of the snow clears we are finishing plans to work with a builder on a modern cabin overlooking the ravine and treehouse, and we are hoping to add more features to navigate terrain on the property. Treehouse Winter Update | Clearing snow and new lights
We have officially taken a break over the winter because it would be a lot of extra work to deal with moving gear with several feet of snow on the ground. But I had heard the snow was wet and heavy, and I wanted to stop by to make sure everything was OK. While I was there, I cleared off the deck and added new lights to see how they would look. DIY Family Treehouse Build: Part 1 | 30 work days in 18 minutes
This project started during the fall of 2021 looking for a suitable site and taking detailed measurements. In winter of 2022 we created a plan and stored materials and salvaged and restored windows. In spring, summer, and fall, we spent a full week on site, a week of prefabricating at home, and about 6 weekends building on site. It totaled about 30 days of building. I always wanted to build something like this but aren't you scared of random people breaking in or something? I mean even kids throwing rock at the window...stuff like that

    • @bigfamilyadventure

      It hasn't been a big focus. We had some stuff stolen from the property soon after we bought it, but I don't think it was random or kids. I installed a game camera with cellular downloads and actually never saw anyone again. I would say I'm more worried about a big storm taking out a tree. Now we have also added a cabin near the treehouse and it feels more like an occupied space, so ransom mischief is less of a concern. It was worth it for us!

    • @bigfamilyadventure

      I didn't make very detailed plans, more of a figure it out as you go approach. But really the bigger issue is that this treehouse would only really work with 4 trees in about the same exact arrangement. If you have something like this, I'd be happy to provide some rough sketches we used, but if you have a different layout of trees, the plans may need to be pretty different.

      We've had a few big storms in the past 2 years. So far no concerns. The trees sway and you can feel everything move a little but it was built to allow the trees to move like that.

    I would have built whatever size space I wanted and never bothered to involve or even acknowledge any build permits or inspections.. No Trespassing signs… They don’t have all the authority they’d like you to believe and when challenged or ignored they generally look the other way when you’re not in an urban environment.. I build what I want on my timber deferred zoned property and nobody’s ever bothered me.. obviously you can’t build a home but everything else is on the menu..

    • @bigfamilyadventure

      I can imagine properties where we would have taken this approach. It was not a good option for our case mostly because we already planned to build a separate cabin on site. This means the same inspectors would already be coming to our property. The treehouse is visible from the road and from the cabin site, so it is wasn't worth the hassle of having problems later on.

    Came across your video in search of ideas for a treehouse project I’m going to be doing in the spring,(yours is loaded)!, I truly love the size and configuration, especially the loft, my only question is did you use all dynamic supports or is one of the supports static, still unsure what to do, I have 4 trees,(fir), with average diameter of 18”’s and 15’ span, my thought is 1 static and 3 dynamic, what are your thoughts please,

    • @bigfamilyadventure

      This does have 3 dynamic and 1 static. It was a 4 tree “kit” from a diy supplier. It will gradually shift on the dynamic supports until it is very off center. My latest video shows this and an issue we had with the plastic bearing strips sinking into the beams. Keep this in mind if you have snow loads or might be on the upper end of the rating for the smaller hardware.

    Hi again, i was wondering what size are the OSB boards for the outside and, it could be done without the OSB and only with the cladding? thank you

    • @bigfamilyadventure

      These are standard sheet sizes in the US. 4'x8'x7/16". You could use a cladding that is also the structural sheathing (OSB) layer, but I don't think you would want to use only horizontal bevel siding and no sheathing. The bevel siding does not provide shear strength - the walls would start to lean in high winds. For a design with a single exterior layer, you can get cladding that is textured sheets (like OSB) that can be painted and may be OK for something like a treehouse.

    • @bigfamilyadventure

      I really hope these are long lived trees, and that doesn't become the failure point. The big beams were definitely overkill, but they were stock sizes, so easier to source. I actually found the metal hardware was NOT over engineered. I plan to put out a lessons learned update soon.

      It absolutely could be nice for easier access. We started out with more of a kid focused design, so it wasn't something we looked at closely yet, but over the years, it could be something that makes sense later!

      It's possible, but the wide angle camera makes it looks like the distance is bigger than it really is. I think it's only 6 or 7 feet, so the straps would be pretty short. We have a hammock chair hanging from under the treehouse beams but it isn't shown close up in videos.
