Thanks, great content in videos.
Awesome thanks for the comment!
Did you use any pva or wax to help release or just the clear package tape?
Just packing tape no need for was or PVA
That black coat on first layer was black color gel coat? and then resin? For resin is epoxy or polyester resin? It came really nice quality and this what I need for my purpose, so thank you very much✌ I've watched so many videos and finally found the one that meets my needs👌
Yes black Gel coat or any color goes on first, after it cures next is laminating polyester resin and fiberglass material(matte or cloth)
Hi, how does the speedometer keep up in the rain, is it waterproof?
I don’t have the bike anymore but from what I remember it was.
Really great work! Definitely know what you're doing. Just wish I could see how you work for certain aspects would really help me for when I start my tank job
Thank you for the comment. Sometimes as someone who has decades of layup time I tend to take certain techniques for granted as to easy or not worth talking about. Working with fiberglass or any other rigid type mold is a skill set learned over time. Every time you make a mold you learn a new trick or a better way to achieve an even more complex mold. I hope you try making molds and work your way up to your tank project. Please feel free to ask any questions, I will gladly reply to help you succeed.
Absolutely great series of videos. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed them
what gas cap is that and where did you get it? awesome build I just bought an fj1100 with a 1200 engine to build a street fighter
I bought a crashed modern sport bike tank and cut the bung out and welded to FJ tank then had access to an assortment of caps available
@@iccustomsusa8048 thanks
Where did you get all the materials?
I source my materials via direct from fiberglass material supplier’s, eBay, Amazon. I generally buy in larger bulk due to other business requirements. But for small quantity go with best price
did you put any heat shield on your wires that are close to the engine?
No I use a quality automotive grade wire also Tesa tape both are heat rated made for engine compartments. Items used are in the videos descriptions.
@@iccustomsusa8048 oh ok im doing a bike build and my wires are touching the top of my valve cover
You will be ok as long as you use a heat rated wire and the tape. I believe I note the materials used in this series of videos in the description section
you still have the old presure plate?
No, I do not this was a project bike that was sold when it was completed.
what forks are you running on this build? i still have stock and need to change them out.
Switched to Sabre as they were shorter than Magna.
@@iccustomsusa8048 Right on. Beautiful build mate. Great job.
Thanks
Awesome videos! Very informative. I may have missed it because you only show bubble rolling on the 3rd layer.. Do I bubble roll each layer? Also if I only get time to do the first layer can I come back the next day and just start the next layer? To learn and trial and error I am just using the 3M fiberglass resin sold in stores for typical bodywork.
I typically roll after I have laid all layers. Yes you sure can lay up on previous layers. I am not sure what the type of resin used in auto body it may be a finishing resin if it is…. That will require scuffing the surface for a better bond between layers. If it still has a tacky feel after cured that would be a laminating resin you should be fine to apply without scuffing the surface.
I was watching your one-off fiberglass tutorial, and I'm trying to make my own fairing... I have a problem though, in making the mold, how do you ensure it is symmetrical? What measuring tools do you use?
There are a few tools or methods to get symmetrical parts such a center line to edge measurements, using a contour gauge, cutting thin plywood ribs building a frame within your part similar to a skeleton. This is just to name a few it all really depends on part
I changed my wheels to 17" for a better range of tire choices, which demanded a few changes . . . . You have a nice clean build there ! I will subscribe to see if you have any updates on this video.
Yes sir, this is episode 3 of this build series. Plus I used this build to make a few how too videos on this channel. Enjoy and thanks for the subscribe
It would be great if you would put a link to the stuff you used to make the mold.
Thanks for the comment, I will look to add this info
How its possible for commercial use.
I produce and sell these tanks and have for years. Fiberglass tanks have been around for decade’s but the addition of ethanol requires use of vinyl ester resin due to it improved resistance.
@@iccustomsusa8048 thanks
Perfect instructional videos. You're a great teacher!
Thank you! Glad they are helpful
I am assuming the glue/puddy is vinyl ester resin with a fill as a thickner.
Yes, I use cabosil as the thickening agent and milled fiber for a binder.
Great content!
Thanks, I need to get back on this project as life has me stalled on its progress. Stay tuned I will get back to it.
This has been an amazing series, thanks for sharing so much!
Thanks for watching and the encouraging comment
It would make sense seeing as you are making these videos to show how you are layering the fibreglass not just explaining about it and showing the finish product would be helpful Are you the person that is actually making these parts?
In this series I recently added production of the tank which is 4 parts and I go through layup ect.
Nice to see the final vid. Good series and well made. Thank you 👍
Thanks for the comment
Nice follow up to Part 1 👍
Thanks for the comment
Good video with lots of information, thank you.
Thanks for the comment! Hope they help you with your project
Wish i'd found this ages ago...so much good information, one of the best I've watched on the process. Well done
Awesome thanks for the feedback!
God bless you, you are a wonderful person I have a question about what is the adhesive used. I want another answer because I am from a country far away from you with many thanks
Resin used for layup and making the compound is vinyl ester resin, I use a fuel tank sealer to cover any exposed fibers within the tank
Incredible work. Thank you for sharing all this valuable information
Thank you for the compliment! Glad you found the video of use!
Very nice work.
Thank you!
Probably the best series I've dug into on the net! I build custom kids pedal planes and am tired of hand crafting everything from scratch. My plan is to make a body mold of them so I can crank them out quicker!
Thank You, I hope they help with your project. For sure will speed up production over one off style manufacturing. You could make multiple molds and really crank out a many per day.
I tig welded 3 M3 screws In the corners of the metal sheets. Drilled holes for M3 screws to pass in the gussets on frame pockets. Added rubber U channel around edges the installed with nuts inside frame.
Still trying to see how you make the mesh triangle shaped pieces in the sides of frame!
Wow....this is awesome...Kawi AR80 Tank is pinholed...I need help...: )
I have making a tank mold series as well follow along. Hope it helps!
Really nice look parts!
Thank you! the ATC came out nice
Do you have any suggestions for avoiding gelcoat alligatoring? I've been doing composites for a long time but still run into alligator issues from time to time. I know the common tip is to not apply the gel too thin. But i've heard others say to not brush usa based gel because it isn't formulated for it. - However you show that there are no issues. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated!
Yes, here are a few pointers to apply to your wrinkle problem. consider upping your catalyst by a small amount maybe 1/4% also increase mixing time when adding MEKP and lastly increase cure time before application of FG and resin. Sounds like your gel coat is not fully cured either due to low mekp, not mixed correctly and has cold spots, or fg applied to soon not fully cured. What is happening is when you apply fg too soon or to a gel coat that is not fully cured during your roll out for bubbles the uncured gel coat breaks down and wrinkles. Hope this helps
@@iccustomsusa8048 Thank you very much! I will give this a try and let you know how it goes! Appreciate your reply! 🙏🏻 - You do great work 👍🏻!
Underrated. Deserves more subscribers 😊
Thank you for the comment!
@@iccustomsusa8048 question man, do you really need to use a gas tank sealer?. I am from a country where por15 isn’t available. Was wondering if the resin could withstand or resist petrol for a very long time.
@@erickneilnoveros6525 there are 2 functions for a tank sealer in this instance. It is not only for petrol/ethanol resistance it also is to cover any potentially exposed fiberglass fibers at the surface you can’t see with your eye. Those exposed fibers act as wick’s and slowly transmit fuel throughout the fibers within the tanks structure to open edges. Ruining any paint work. You could use many other tank sealer brands available. I have used por 15 and epoxy sealer
@@iccustomsusa8048 thank you man. You are very helpful
No problem
What is the name of the glue used? Does it really prevent petrol seepage?
I use por 15 tank sealer. Yes it will seal any exposed fibers.
Man, You really inspired me and now I finish my mold, thank u very much to share your experience!!.
That’s good to hear! Glad the videos helped
What kind of media do you use?
I mainly use black diamond from tractor supply as it is very cheap. Great for old paint and rust. It is dirty and you have to clean the filter a lot. But I also use Aluminum oxide and soda.
Si ce u have a mold....how about a tunnel adapter for an fxr
Not really sure what a tunnel adapter is.
looking good!
Thank man for sharing, I really like to know if the Vynilester support the gas!!.. plz update later.
Yes as noted in the series. it is far superior to polyester resins. Vinyl ester resin has a greater resistance to fuels containing ethanol
I just found your channel. This is a great build. Thanks for making the videos.
Thank you Sir!
You make this look easy ! Thanks for teaching
Thanks! I have made 1 or 2 things in my past ;) Glad you liked the video.
Just ordered this. Thanks for sharing the info. I have to turn off the overhead lights when I blast so i can see better. Do you do that?
No, Since I painted mine with white "Flex Seal" I can see better than with the dark blue. I do plan to replace the Fluorescent bulb with brighter LED's
this video is useful for me, thanks.
Great glad it was useful, I am in the process of finishing a layup video for this series as I was asked to make one so stay tuned. Please subscribe for new content notification
i subscribed 🙂@@iccustomsusa8048
I did not know that it was nessesary to process wiht vinyl ester resin.
Not necessary If your fuel does not contain ethanol. Ethanol is bad for certain plastics and polyester resins is known to be affected. Vinyl esters are not as affected.
I loved this “one-off” series of videos Charley. Thx so much for taking time to show us your method of forming these parts. I’m jealous of your skills and builds. My XV build is coming along well and you have giving me lots of ideas for my body panels.
Awesome glad they were helpful! Also I have a website and starting to offer some custom parts for the XV viragos ICCustomsUSA.com

Are you able to customize any kind of shape front ferring ?
Yes, and I have no 2 bike have been the same.
