Yesterday, I saw the last few minutes of this recording played at Beethoven's Birth House, and I'm still stunned by it... RIP Beethoven, RIP Bernstein.

What a historic concert it was. And how appropriate that the Maestro, Leonard Bernstein, was the conductor. No doubt he, beginning his journey on to the next life , a more heavenly existence , was conducting with inspiration from the heavenly hosts. You can see it in his expression. It gives me chills. My husband and I are from Vienna and were blessed to attend this concert, commemorating what might possibly be one of the most significant events of our lifetimes. Growing up in Vienna in the 1970s and studying music at Universität Wien during the 80s, we remember very well when Germany was still divided. It was such a deeply emotional event to us when the Berlin Wall came down. It seemed like humanity had finally gotten it right. We’re still praying that we do one day. We miss you, Maestro. A light was lost to this world when you left. 🙏🙏🙏✌🏼With love from Austria. 🇦🇹🇦🇹🇦🇹🌺🥂🌹🎼🎵🎶❤

Watching Leonard Bernstein conduct is like watching Michael Angelo paint. A true artist. And this was only a few months before he died. I marvel that Beethoven, deaf when he wrote this, could keep all these notes and instruments in his head. He remembered what each note sounded like.

Awesome! But they should've changed the "Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen" and "freudig, wie ein Held zum siegen" to "Frei, wie seine Sonnen fliegen", and "frei, wie ein Held zum siegen", too!

That 3rd movement though, Lenny conducts it like Bruckner which in this context is wholly appropriate. Bravo !

One of the best symphonies and conducting ever. My favorite along with direction by Sir George Solti with Chicago Symphony, I believe. Love lots of other pieces too.

I grew up on Leonard Bernstein's Youth Concerts on TV, which served as my introduction to classical music. I remember watching this live in 1989 with my wife...it is as spectacular a performance now as it seemed then. Danke, Maestro; Mögen Sie immer als Segen in Erinnerung bleiben, solange die Musik lebt.

I was introduced to this piece through Little Einsteins. It was the very first one being on the Direct to Video movie Our Huge Adventure. It’s very interesting listening to the piece outside of the show and it ultimately helps me appreciate it more. And I’m sure Butterfly would love the fact that his special song is being used as a symbol of universal brotherhood.

Only 5.6K likes, and it's already June 26, 2024. The vid was posted in 2017. Seven years have gone by in the interim. CRAZY!!! This like count is criminally low. The universe is full of wonders. Billions of years old. And yet so many of us can't abide something being created less than 1 year ago. As if clustering ourselves in the freshly-created is supposed to render us immune from all travail and death. BALDERDASH!!!! Every atom in your body was created long, long, long, long ago. So, let's get out there! And let's celebrate beauty for what it really is. For what it actually is -- salve for our souls. Not some tawdry, laughable charade of an excuse to live an actual life of fulfilment!! LET'S GET GOING!!! Who's with me?

I was shocked by the thought that Bernstein would already die in 1990 and as if he absolutely understands Beethoven and sees God and love and knows that he will soon also go into eternity, but the 9th symphony gives him a feeling of absolute awe for him and happiness, because he is at the entrance to Elysium

This is so meaningful. Not Karajan, a onetime Nazi who died in July 1989, but Lenny - as representative of the US, the Jewish people, and classical music - is conducting to celebrate the reunification of Germany. How do you interpret his silence immediately after the end of the performance? Paradoxically, silence talks.
