    Wow, I really enjoyed this talk. Publicly available data is definitely the way to go!! Everyone benefits, and it's hugely beneficial to institutions that can't afford to do the heavy lifting to get the data in the first place. It's great to hear that shared data is helping you be more efficient in the lab. "Research waste" is a real thing that goes beyond just physical objects! I also wanted to say how exciting it is to hear about how numerical/modeling type data is useful in cancer research... my own approach is numerical, and it's exciting when simulations or numerical data turns out to point to a real thing in observations. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your next video!

    Awesome video! Thank you so much, Hayley and Susan. I know many men who haven't seen a doctor in over 20-years. If it weren't for regular PSA testing, I would have had no idea my PSA was rising. I had a random biopsy, and it was negative. I'm grateful my doctor recommended to continue PSA testing even though I had no symptoms, a clear DRE, and a negative biopsy. Years later, an MRI identified a significant analogy and a targeted biopsy confirmed cancer. My tumour was the size of two-golf balls!! If I had known about the MRI, I would have refused the random biopsy. The MRI and targeting biopsy would have found my cancer earlier and, therefore, not allow it to continue to grow undetected. It turns out that my cancer was in the final stage before breaching the prostate, and I had absolutely no symptoms. Men shouldn't wait for 20-years before seeing a doctor. In fact, they shouldn't wait for symptoms to have an annual checkup.

    This is a great start but there is so much more. Both phytocannabinoids like THC and CBD and our own self-made endocannabinoids like anandamide and 2-AG kill cancer cells through similar mechanisms. This reality would make it far more likely that phytocannabinoids would indeed work in humans, which has been reported consistently for over 10 years by at least hundreds of patients and now documented in several PubMed case studies. A placebo-controlled trial from GW Pharmaceuticals also proved that THC and CBD could synergize with chemotherapy to extend survival in glioblastoma patients. Cannabis is far from perfect and doesn't work for everyone but there is no doubt at this point it can produce anticancer effects in some patients. Just like CBD fighting epilepsy was scoffed at by the medical community in 2013, and then went on to become an FDA-approved drug to treat seizures literally no other pharmaceuticals could touch, the same is going to happen for cancer.

    Hi, I wonder, would you be able to answer my question: How would you compare cancer research in Europe to research in States ( funding, scale etc.) I seems like all the new things come from institutions like Dana Faber Cancer Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center etc. I am not involved in cancer research in any way, I am veterinarian, but I find oncology a fascinating field of science.

    • @CancerResearchDemystified
      @CancerResearchDemystified 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question! Susan here with my answer: there is a perception among patients that the US has access to more clinical trials in cancer - it's something I hear being said quite often. I don't think the difference is as dramatic as it is perceived to be though, to be honest. It is a difficult thing to compare - I did find a report from 2007 (not as recent as I'd like!) which found that spending on cancer research was relatively even between the USA and Europe, along with number of research publications (images.politico.eu/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Investment_and_Outputs_of_Cancer_Researc.pdf). There are plenty of exciting things going on in the UK in terms of new advancements and new trials. I've worked in cancer research on both sides of the Atlantic and I personally think there is a much bigger difference from hospital to hospital (or university to university) than there is from country to country!

    Thank you so much for your work in cancer research! My name is Gogs, and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017. I had no symptoms, even though the cancer was in the final stage before breaching the prostate. The tumour was significant in size and was out of reach of the DRE. Since my PSA continued to rise without explanation, I had a prostate biopsy. The results were negative for cancer. At the time, I assumed this meant that I was cancer-free but didn't realize the biopsy was random and could miss cancer. My PSA continued to rise over the years, and it was recommended that I have an MRI. The results identified a significant anomaly that was then targeted by another prostate biopsy. This time the results were positive. Since I had no symptoms, I'm grateful for regular PSA testing. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had an MRI and a targeted prostate biopsy. Although, I could have done without the first random biopsy as it missed my cancer and allowed it to grow undetected for years.

    Great presentation, easy to understand and you kept it real - it doesn't always work. Thanks for your work. Look forward to hearing more. Question - what factors are considered in "personalizing" immunotherapy?

    • @CancerResearchDemystified
      @CancerResearchDemystified 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching and commenting Pamela! Some types of immunotherapy are inherently personalized because they involve taking the patients’ own immune cells into the lab, altering them to be better at detecting & destroying cancer cells, and then infusing them back into the patient - so this is a bespoke treatment for each and every patient. Other types of immunotherapy are less personalised, they might include drugs treatments that spark an anti-cancer immune response within the patient. In order to make these more personalised, researchers are finding ways to figure out which types of patients will benefit most from which specific type of drug, often by running analyses on the patient’s genes. Sometimes specific mutations in the patient’s DNA, or the expression levels of a set of genes can be used to figure out how likely that patient is to respond to that drug. I hope this makes sense!
