"Cycling Around Taipei" Riverside Cycling 66K Challenge | 環騎臺北66K 河濱自行車挑戰
(Taipei, Taiwan)
Please give a thumbs up and subscribe!
The "Cycling Around Taipei" challenge is presented by the Hydraulic Engineering Office (HEO) of the Public Works Department of Taipei City. It is to promote and celebrate the completion of the 112km-long riverside bikeway network around Taipei. It is a certification campaign with monthly challenges to encourage the public to learn and experience the riverside bikeways through cycling and exercise. The official challenge goes from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025, so there's a few more months to get out there and complete the challenge! The official registration steps to follow are published by the HEO website in both Chinese and English:
(中文版) heo.gov.taipei/cp.aspx?n=3D01D45FB86C3A40
(English) english.heo.gov.taipei/cp.aspx?n=6B46F2F5104184B4
The route is also included on the website in GPX format. The main requirement is to stay on the riverside trail as marked by the app, but for the off-trail section, it is possible to take one of several alternatives to arrive at the other end of the riverside trail. The "Challenge Ride" is 66km or around 40 miles total. Participants who complete the challenge and subsequently verified receive medallion, an electronic completion certificate, and may be eligible for other drawings.
The ride along the riverside trail is quite picturesque in parts, with many landmarks visible. It is also flat and well maintained, with portable restrooms and shaded rest areas. The only challenges on this stretch are the many pedestrians and cyclists who use this trail, especially on weekends, and the occasional head wind. Once off the riverside trail, my route took me over a small climb near the Taipei Zoo in Muzah, past the China University of Science and Technology, the Nangang Exhibition Center, and back on the trail again. Nangang was busy with car and pedestrian traffic, and I made a few wrong turns in my confusion in this area. If you have a better alternative for this stretch, please let me know in the comments.
I did not submit this ride as I did not have all the details for registration at that time, but I plan to do the ride again when I return and submit for credit. Have you completed the challenge?

when you're participating on tour de france you need all this., time trialist , stronger on climber to become tour champion. like hinault. roche. indurain, my idol. lance armstrong. even they said about doping, still considet the greatest cyclist of all time..
Agreed! The physical demands of the TdF on the human body is just incredible. You need a strong team to protect you until it is time to put in your effort, and then you need to sustain 7 watts/Kg for some 30 minutes to win a mountain stage. That's a tough day on the bike for anyone, but to do that for 3 weeks! Doped or not, the past winners were incredible athletes.
The greatest time trial performance of all time.
A great victory for Andy! Thanks for this video.
Wow Good job that you record this long video. This is so meaningful. I did Taiwan KOM as well so this reminds me of the memory. Respect your challenge!
Thanks for your kind words. It is definitely a challenging ride and I wanted to record it since I cannot find a video of the entire route when I was doing recon in preparation. I'm glad it brought back memories and hope more folks can find it useful.
@@petescyclingvideos Yeah and hope the Taiwan KOM lasts for long. Thanks!
Read Fignons book We Were Young and Carefree. The irony of the final time trial according to him was that it was his fastest time trial over that distance in his career. Another irony was that he was offered the same equipment that Lemond had before the first time trial. So the decision not to use the new aero bars probably lost him the tour.
Sounds like interesting reading. I will definitely check it out. Thanks for the recommendation!
Dios Indurain, el mejor ciclista de la historia , coooon diferencia
I still have the music ABC Sports used as underscore for the 89 Tour de France.
Since you have ridden this course, would you go with a gravel rig or mountain bike?
At my skill level, I would need to hike up the steep, sandy sections no matter what bike I use. That said, the course can be done with either gravel or mountain bike, but I would not go with less than 45mm tires with lower pressure. This year's course is expected to be slightly different, but I suspect the challenges will be similar since it is in the same area.
@@petescyclingvideos after watching more of your video, I’m opting for my Top Fuel!
Good luck and enjoy the ride!
An epic day for the Tour
Hello. Nice vid. What camera and app did you use?
Hi, thanks for your comment. I used a GoPro Hero 10 with enough batteries to last the ride. I've since upgraded to a Hero 12. For editing I use Telemetry Overlay for the data overlay. Hope to see you at the ride this year!
2024 roadies of the Aero is everything persuasion are watching Fignon in total horror…😂
That was the genesis of all the aero breakthroughs of today. It is amazing how some are quick to adapt and some refuse until it bites them hard.
Fignon didn't think LeMond could make up 50 seconds in the time trial.
Yup, a lesson that's repeated time and again over the years - arrogance never pays.
same as Moser cant make up 81 sec gap against him in Giro
I bet Fignon was really upset at mig passing him like that
Big Mig surprised a lot of riders during that time trial. I think by '92 Fignon was a shell of what he once was and quickly fading from pro cycling.
Nice footage, I'm doing the Bike the Bay next week. Did you have to pay for parking?
It is a great ride and the view on the bridge is super cool. There are plenty of parking options including on-street parking near the venue that are free but first-come-first-serve.
To this day the statement that Pedro Delgato fell out of the race in the Alps is false. He lost it because he showed up at the Prologue late.
Absolytely. Still don't know why he was late, but it was mentioned in this recap video (th-cam.com/video/Aq35h8dpFXI/w-d-xo.html) that Delgado was late to start the prologue by 2:42 and it would "haunt him the entire race". Hard to make up that much time lost, not to mention the psychological effect something like that has on a rider.
Excellent rider i loved watching him ✌️
Arguably one of the most accomplished American cyclists of all time.
Tough call on using my gravel bike or my mtb. Both weigh the same.
It depends on whether you are riding the Dirty Cub or Dirty Bear in my opinion. The Dirty Bear a couple years back went through some bits of single track and deep sandy areas but the part that a suspended MTB will do great is the downhill near the end that was very rocky. For the Cub I've done it on my gravel and it is just fine, and with added benefit of being faster on pavement. Either choice will be great for a fun ride this weekend!
Interesting high-stack position on the TT bike. Seems ahead of its time.
Not sure it's his riding position, Paul. More those Conconi products...
Well, we do have the benefit of over 30 years of hindsight that Paul didn't have when he was asked to step in front of the camera and analyze Indurain. Unfortunately for us, we'll never know if Paul would amend his comments today since he left us so soon.
@@petescyclingvideos Fair enough. RIP Sherwen.
@@petescyclingvideos do you think Si and Dan from QVC I mean GCN as well as Eurosport will amend their comments once we find out what gear the current lot is on?
I would be interested to hear their comments on Tadej Pogacar being faster than Pantani and Armstrong when they set their times in the midst of doping. I'm not saying Tadej is doping - I don't know, but it is a rather superhuman performance.
Watching cycling in the 80’s meant a few hours once a week with Mr. Tesh and his noodly music. Some say that Dave Tesh wrote a lot of the music that is credited to John. Tour-Tour-Tour-Tour de France Give me that bike I’m going to ride it.
Great memories😊
Definitely!
"Miguel In The Rain" 😂😂😂
turning 17 in september, '92 and up here in canada coverage was scarce to put it mildly back in those days.... k so passionate bike geeks like myself, the old videos are good because i do my own learning with them.... i thought front disc wheels were gone by 1990, but i was obviously wrong, for they were used in this tt (proud owner of many at this point - including nos front ghibli). the selle italia lumbar support was not banned by the uci yet so very happy to see that in the vid (proud owner of one of those as well - nos). and phil liggett will always go down as the best play-by-play man in commentary there will ever be
Wow! You were quite the pioneer with all that equipment! Thanks for the comment and nice to meet another Phil Liggett fan. I'm still digging through boxes of video tapes and digitizing what I find so more gems are on the way!
The first EPO Tour de France
Very impressive ride! Can I ask technical questions about your videos? How do you overlay your ride stats (speed, grade, distance)?
Thanks for your comment. For the data overlay, I used to use Garmin's VIRB Edit, but Garmin stopped supporting it a while back. Now I use a program called Telemetry Overlay for my Garmin data in the video. It requires a license, and I'm not sponsored by them. There are other options available, some may be free, but I found this one to work best for me.
nice to find this video - thanks for carrying the added kit/weight to allow the filming of the entire ride. Hoping to be in Taiwan for work in oct 2024 and be able to ride the KOM challenge. Hoping to get to 6hrs as a fit amateur.
Glad you found and enjoyed the video! Unfortunately, the earthquake a couple months back caused major damage to the road and the event is unlikely to take place this year. However, it is still possible to ride from the west side starting in Puli and it is just as challenging. Good luck and safe rides!
@@petescyclingvideos I hadnt heard anywhere that the event might not run...and know its an important road that might get fixed 'quickly' - i'll see if I can find more info. I have some alumni in taiwan

@@petescyclingvideos Thank you 🙏
Looking at Fignon and he appears as such an anomaly. He had the thick legs of a sprinter and was not a walking skeleton like the climbers we are used to seeing today, but he could ride with the best in mountain stages. A truly great rider.
It seemed a completely different sport than what we see today and required a different build to dominate.
that ridge road starts off steep right at the start compared to the mountain road
Haha, yes it does! Around 8 to 9% for about a mile. The cool thing was watching the pros come through during Tour of California after climbing up Baldy Road and most of them were just relaxed and eating on the same stretch of road that has me gasping for breath at the top!
was he riding calfees at that time
According to Calfee Designs, they entered into a 2-year agreement and supplied 18 bikes to LeMond's team in 1991.
It's an awesome-looking course! I'm definitely signing up for this year's race. Just need to get in some sort of shape before then.
It is a great but challenging course and the guys that put the event together are super chill. If you go out there to recon get in touch with them and they may even show you around.
@@petescyclingvideos Thank you! Yeah, once I get some miles in, I'll reach out to them.
Love the Camp Pendleton bypass. Don’t miss cycling in California at all though. What a dystopian mess.
I was In Ammo Company. 43 Area was my home 16 years ago and I miss it.
Thank you for your service
Congrats! It was a huge achievement for anyone who are able to make it to the top regardless rankings. Do you train regularly in order to participate?
Thank you for your kind words! I had hoped to ride it again this fall but the earthquakes have devastated the area so it is unlikely to happen. For my last ride, I put together a training program for 6 months where I increased my functional threshold power by 10 Watts, dropped my weight by 30 Pounds, and had altitude acclimation exercises. It was a lot of work but the result was well worth the efforts.

Taiwan is a wonderful place for cycling🚴🚲🚵 it should be part on your to go places list !
I agree completely! Taipei is surrounded by mountains that are within 30 minutes riding in any direction. Traffic is light once you are outside of the city center. Despite the traffic, it is a very cycling friendly place. If you go outside of Taipei, the weather becomes much better too. What's not to like?

Why was Indurain never questioned or pursued like Armstrong?
This is just my opinion. Everyone doped during that era. But not everyone was caught and still denied it and ended up disgraced in a scandal. Not everyone was arrogant and used his power to keep people quiet and made enemies. Indurain was unassuming and not flashy, and nobody had any reason to go after him when there were lots of other targets to generate copy.
Because Lance Armstrong was an international superstar, known by people who knew nothing about cycling. Relatively miguel indurain was a complete unknown. Nobody cared to ask.
Relatively unknown? Indurain is a five time tourwinner and two time giro winner, world champ, olympic champ….😂
@@david9243Relative to Armstrong. Go ask someone who isn't into cycling who any cyclist who isn't Lance Armstrong is. Lance Armstrong was actually bigger than the sport.
@@jaydaniels6172: I understand but that is due to his pull in USA and possibly his story as a cancer survivor. It never was that big sport in USA before that (after Lemond). It shouldnt have any effect in the relatively small cycling world and those that brought Armstrong down was his close circle of buddies in US Postal. Maybe they gained something from it but it looks like it was mostly because he was a big douchebag - Indurain never was.
How many hours until you reach the finish line?
Was there a cut off?
@@boCal_cyclist There is, and I don't know what it is, but lots of riders on the Waffle route finish way after dark. It took me almost 11 hours to complete the Waffle and they are still there.
I did the Wafer route in about 6 hours, both in 2022 and 2021.
Thank you for your real riding video. Today, I completed this course by watching the video with virtual riding 👍👍
Thank you for your kind comments. I'm glad the video was helpful. Now you are ready to go to Taiwan and do the ride next year!
This TDF ended on the right note for Greg, I thought Fignon was the stronger rider during the race, especially in the mountains but Greg was the better time trialist and utilized better technology to get more out of his time trialing efforts.
Totally agree! For me that year was the epitome of the race, when the best man won. No backstabbing teammates, no scandals, no dramas.
a time machine to bring me there, oh my lord please
I can't imagine what it would be like to witness the stage live and in person
Wondering how much speed does that bike have going uphill. 20mph?
The bike's assisted speed is 20mph and the motor puts out 250 Watts. You'll have to supply the additional power to get it to 20mph but it would be much less than unassisted. I think I was pushing 400+ Watts and still getting dropped like I was going backwards.
Well done and thank you for the video, inspiring!
Thank you for your kind comments and for watching the video!
