Santa Cruz Wharf COLLAPSES!!! Our First Hand Account of the Disaster - December 23, 2024
A huge swell event hit Santa Cruz California on 12/23/2024, causing a large portion of the city's wharf to break off and fall into the sea, taking with it 3 construction workers, heavy machinery, and the public bathroom building. We take you to the coast of our hometown to check out the unprecedented event first hand as it unfolded in real time.

Can we find authentic Mexican food in Santa Cruz County, CA?

We drive half way across the county from Santa Cruz into Watsonville to sample Guachinango Zarandeado style sea food done in the traditional Nayarit manner. We'll take you inside the cozy, 20 year old restaurant to see if our tastebuds can stand the salsa. We also order two different fish dishes, both of which were cooked to perfection. We'll definitely be back for more!

Hey so sorry this happened to you, it's unfortunately a big problem on the islands. Thank you for sharing and educating!
We know ya love Puerto Vallarta...and I could see why...lovely...lady time I was there was 1986
Time to visit again! A lot has changed, and it's still a gorgeous and warm place.
They'r e not done by the govenment
Some wall structures are created by the municipal and state government, as well as private entities, but this one certainly wasn't.
Mind blowing, isn't it? I walked that wharf since I was a child in the late 1960s. I almost headed over there today myself (the day after) from Capitola to see if they were trying to remove the traveling bathroom yet but got side-tracked. If only they could save it, move it somewhere for display and make it a landmark. This is history being made. Cool video. Looks like it won't be in one piece for long. If the waves don't crush it then the logs will.
Mind blowing indeed! Many people have a shared history of memories made, and those are now floating around in the ocean. Maybe some thing can yet be salvaged. Thanks for watching and stay safe out there!
Sad sad very sad😢
Yeah I heard I haven't looked at the video yet just responding right off the bat but earthquakes around there lately I'm going to watch the video I figured I'd just say hello it's John Miller living in Belize now You know I have been for a while just checking in with the hometown bro I miss Santa Cruz I just can't be there it's too much expense I love you guys❤❤❤❤😂😂🎉🎉🎉
Stay tuned, we'll be releasing a longer video of the event as it unfolded by tomorrow. It's sad, indeed, but at least everyone was ok and it will be rebuilt! Sending good vibes from Santa Cruz!
the pooper going up the river...
Crazy!!!
Any sense in getting USD converted at my bank in the US before I go?
In our experience, not really, especially if your bank doesn't charge foreign transaction fees. We don't like to travel with that much cash, the exchange rate is pretty much the same, and you have to go to your bank to pick up the pesos, so we just find the atms to be with the small price of the transaction fee for the ease and convienence. Just use one owned by a major bank, not a free standing, independent atm company. Those ones often charge fees that are way too expensive.
@aviandv thanks. Appreciate the info
does not interest me because looks like a tourist trap
That's too bad. You're missing out on an awesome city, but we won't try to change your mind.
@aviandv we never made it to that town. We stopped at Yelapa. Thanks for sharing this. We may need to go back lol.
This town felt a lot like Yelapa, but less busy and not so packed with tourists. It has a better beach area, too. We really liked it and would be down to spend a few days there, sometime.
It's not a good time to go to Mexico and the new government is very scary now be careful things are changing in Mexico now. And it's gotten very expensive now. Better not to go be safe.
Rex you don’t know what you’re talking about
Whoa #862 here in da house ! You have almost doubled your subscribers awesome! Went to Puerto Vallarta in November was so balmy hot ! When is the cooler time of year to visit ?? Mucho gracias
Thanks Anthony! We were there in September and same for us. It was so sweaty! December through April is when the weather is the most pleasant, there. We absolutely love that city around Christmas and New Years.
Hee! Hee! You guys are too young to go to bed at 10:30 on vacation! I'm 61 and I may have been a wedding crasher if I was there! LOL. BTW, love your videos! I am going to this resort in March - for the first time - can't wait!
Thanks for watching! We actually had been traveling since 3am that day, but we do go to bed earlier than some. Lol Have fun on your trip🍹🥳

thx a lot for the airport tips we are a bit nervous about that lol
@inandoutnature5127 You should be fine if you just walk by the people in the "shark tank." Otherwise, it's just like most other airports. Have fun and feel free to ask us any other questions you think we could answer :)
@@aviandv great thx a lot will u recommend a tour guide u use?
That was great! Thank you so much for showing us this resort. My husband and I are scheduled to arrive on December 19th and are very excited to stay here especially after watching your video.
@@pattiscarborough6275 thank you so much and we hope you have so much fun! It's a great resort at a good value.
Great video. I've subscribed.
Thank you!
Such a great video! Very helpful. I’m going with my teenager in late fall 2025 it’s our first time in Mexico. Downtown PV seems pretty safe during the day. Can you recommend a good all inclusive with a beach and activities for adults/teens. We will do the activities together so doesn’t have to be just for teens.
Thank you so much! We love hearing that our videos help people. Puerto Vallarta is a very safe city, especially if you stick to the Centro and Zona Romantica areas, though we've explored well beyond those and have never felt unsafe. We know you'll have so much fun! Our favorite AI is an adults only. We've stayed at Plaza Pelicanos and enjoyed it, but there wasn't much in the way of activities. We recently stayed at the Riu in Nuevo Vallarta (review video coming soon!) and while we found the food and pool to be so so, we really enjoyed the beautiful beach area and there was LOTS of activities for all ages! It's a little out of the way, but easy enough to catch an Uber or a Taxi from if you want to get off the resort and explore the city. We've never stayed there, but we've heard great things about the Hyatt Ziva to the south of the city and the Hilton by the marina. Also never stayed there but if you want to be right in town, check out the Buenaventura. Beach there is a little rocky but the location can't be beat. We hope you have a great trip and that you grow to love Vallarta as much as we do!

I've lived here on the big island going on 20 years. I'm very sorry you ran across one of the far and few between World-Class A$$hole /Jerks that do reside here on the Big Island. You guys understandably did not know, you guys were apologetic and clearly we're sincere about it. AND you guys really did NOTHING wrong. Please don't let that JERK dissuade you from coming back to the Big Island. The only thing I wish was you were 6'5" and 250 pounds and you clocked the guy. Seriously, you guys did the right thing and the mature thing by just walking away. Paul McCartney sang people are the same wherever you go. There are good and bad. And Jimmy Buffett wrote a song about that bad guy that you unfortunately encountered: th-cam.com/video/sybrZXnWx60/w-d-xo.html
Most of the places at or near the boardwalk that I use to frequent are long gone. First times I went there was in the 1960s. At the beginning of this video when you walk in and suggest the Giant Dipper, that whole area is new and is where the shooting gallery use to be. There was also an arcade where I saw my very first video game (Computer Space). Directly across from Neptune's Kingdom there was an Italian restaurant. Now just parking spaces.
Wow, it must have been really cool to live in Santa Cruz in the 60s. It sure has changed around here!
Looks like a great place - I'd stay there! Great video guys!! 🙂👍
Thanks Karen!
Condo is very cool! That roof top terrace 😮 👍🏼👍🏼
It's a good one, indeed!
Beautiful...thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it! We've got lots more from Puerto Vallarta coming soon.😎
Looks great- the washer/dryer is golden.
It's really nice not to have to go to a lavanderia twice (drop off and pickup clothing); Mexico is, in general, a hot and humid place, and one can sweat a lot. We also like to travel light, so we use up our clothing selection pretty quickly. It's just one of the many reasons why this place is the shiz! :)
Do you have to pay for the cabanas and how much were they
The cabanas were free.
@ o ok are there any ways to pay to reserve them.
Not that we're aware of, but it couldn't hurt to message the resort and ask. In our experience, they responded quickly to emails. The best way we found to make sure you get a cabana for the day is to get up early and claim one with a towel and a book or something like that. We went out around 8 and there were still several available but by 10 they were all taken - at least the ones on the beach. The pool area ones seemed to fill up later and empty out more often.
How safe is it for tourists ?😮
Relatively.... we'd say it's a safe as any big city such as NYC, LA or SF. There are certain things to be cautious of (such as the well known electronic thieves that use motorcycles) and it's best always maintain situational awareness. The city also does have a visible homeless population, but that didn't cause us to feel unsafe. If you stick to the tourist areas and main streets, don't walk around alone at night and don't flash phones and cameras, you should be fine. The side streets aren't well lit, we'd recommend avoiding them in the dark. We did experience a hate crime in the form of direct antisemitism, but that's a story we'll tell at another time, and we know that could have happened anywhere in the world, especially with the current state of affairs. Basically, be smart, stay aware and don't travel alone at night. It's a beautiful city that's definitely worth seeing and experiencing.
6:56 Not worth the schlep... My girlfriend would agree with that. It depends upon how much you value your time and money when you travel. Since it's only about a five-minute walk to the Uber pick up, you're "earning" two dollars per minute for five minutes. I'd rather "earn" that 10 bucks and spend that on another margarita or two instead of the differnce a taxi. Also, if you have more than a carry-on when you travel to Puerto Vallarta, you have too much baggage. I've traveled enough to learn to travel light. No overhead bin for me. When I travel, I have a only a personal bag that fits under the seat. That's it. That said, this is a great video. Great tip about the ATMs. I'll be going to their favorite restaurant as well.
Thanks so much! We're so glad you liked it. We know you'll love Cuates! It's the best! There are so many different travel styles out there, we know one size never fits all. Many people find it to be totally worth it to cross the bridge, especially if they're on a tight budget or just want to eat some of the best burritos in the city. Carry on only doesn't work for everyone, though. Some people have to carry bulky items such as cpap machines, or car seats and strollers. We have done several trips with carry on only and we've found that it's usually too restrictive for us. Avi has a compressed disc in his lower back that causes him to dislike having anything bulky under his seat while flying. He prefers the leg room, instead. I dislike not being able to take more than 1 pair of shoes and I prefer to bring my own hair dryer whenever possible. I don't like to have to limit my shopping to only small items because my small bag is already full. We also carry a lot of filming and computer equipment, due to the vlog, which takes up a good amount of space. As far as the savings and time goes, we would rather pay the extra 10 bucks for the covienence. However, we are thankful that we're fortunate enough to be in a financial position where we can make that choice, but not everyone is. If one is traveling on a tighter budget, absolutely cross the bridge! We want everyone to find a travel style that works for them, their lives and their budget and we're so glad you've found yours! Thanks again for watching! Happy travels!
@@aviandv Thank you for the detailed response. I have an Airbnb rental here in the tropics and I 'm amazed as to how much baggage people have that they'll never EVER need. There has been plenty written about this and the consensus is you should NEVER check luggage if at all possible. I started thinking and reading about this about 40 years ago. The older I got the smarter I got about packing and what really is necessary. I once spent a month in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. I went against the grain because my friend told me to check luggage then thinking I would need all these clothes. She was wrong and it turned out it was a mistake and I'll NEVER do that again. I'm only traveling to warm areas in the winter and I don't go to travel destinations where it's cold. I've only been to PV twice. My niece lives there. Her and her husband have a travel company and a clothing shop (Los Muertos Beach Clothing Co.) so I have a little bit of an advantage of where are the locals go, but I'm still a tourist. I can certainly afford to take a taxi as well, been a millionaire for over 20 years, been self-employed for 34 years and have been an employer, had several employees so I think differently than most about money. Five minutes for $10. That's $120 per hour of post taxed money. If you're a doctor or lawyer then it would be worth it. The more money you make, the more sloppy you can be with it. One would have to bill out there time at $170 per hour pre-taxed money for that five-minute haul. Yeah it's only 10 bucks more and I can certainly afford it too, but it's not about being on a budget, to me that's a silly waste of money to me for very little trouble. Again, my girlfriend would think it would be worth it, but I'm the one who has an ocean view home of my surf break here in Hawaii. th-cam.com/video/5h7WyBw1tr8/w-d-xo.html BTW, I saw that A-hole grab your camera in South Point. So sorry. I have a similar story I'll share with you later. In the meantime, Jimmy Buffett wrote a song about these type of people you encounter once in a while. th-cam.com/video/sybrZXnWx60/w-d-xo.html
What's your advice on self driving vs uber? Self tour vs guide tour? Planning to go in December Thank you
@saolathy Unless you're comfortable driving under the Mexican driving rules and adjusted to their road conditions, which can be more chaotic than the US, we would recommend not driving throughout the town of Puerto Vallarta, as a tourist. We also like to have a beverage during the day, which can complicate matters further if you're the one driving. However, we have rented cars before and have driven out to some of the local towns on Highway 200. Here's a video of just that, if you're curious. th-cam.com/video/FPQNvz4PF54/w-d-xo.html Even when we travel there now, and we just got back a month ago, we let people drive us around town. Have you been there many times before? If you have, then a self tour can be just the thing. We always like striking out on foot and discovering new things about the city. Be prepared, however, for their Google websites to not accurately reflect the store hours concerning when or even whether they are open. Walking to these places only to find out that they're closed can be a drag :) We would be open to getting a tour from a local the next time we go, so that is definitely worth considering, too. Thanks for watching and we hope you have a lot of fun in December! Feel free to ask us anything else on your mind :)

Bring a pen with you. You have to fill out that form on the plane.
True. However, we flew in this September and no paper forms were required, at all. We were given a QR code instead. We had to fill it out and download it to show the gate agents when we left the country. Seems Puerto Vallarta might be implementing the new system that's being rolled out in Mexico.

Is it safe to consume drinks with ice at the restaurants on the Malecon?
Yep! You can generally trust ice.
@aviandv you can't beat the view at that restaurant! @10:15 👍🏼🍻

Much has changed since the Eighties since I was there several times...but the Beauty is still there
@@joycegonzalez4704 yes, it's grown up since then but it is still vibrant, fun and beautiful!
We're gonna head there for a few days next month. Any recommendations on where to get the most bang for your buck? They all look great!
Los vejones is the best, for value as well as taste. Los Pericos is a good value, as well. If you're interested in other types of cuisine, our favorite breakfast places are Whale City bakery in Davenport, Cafe Brasil on mission Street and the Red Apple Cafe in Aptos. For lunch, Charlie Hong Kong and Akira sushi are great options. If you want something by the water, the most economical place is the Crows Nest Beach Market at the harbor They have a great deck over the water. The Crows Nest itself has a great vibe and view, but it's not a good value, at all. For dinner, we love Sugo for Italian, Shun Feng for Chinese, Real Thai kitchen for curry, and the Public Parish for bomb burgers. For activities, check the boardwalk bowls website for their half priced times, look into apple picking at the orchards around Watsonville, and it's a great time of year to go whale watching. The feeding activity lately has been pretty impressive. Have a great time in SC!
You should of took flight on him im kanaka maoli dont let nobody disrespect you unless he warned you beforehand

Can you give us the prices for your haul? Looks amazing!
We'd love to share those details with you. Unfortunately, this trip was 2 years ago and we don't remember all the prices. I know we paid 2000 pesos for the handmade wool blanket. I belive we paid around 100 pesos for the turtle and about the same for the earrings. The sun stone plaque was something like 400 or 500 pesos. The rest, I can't recall. We'd have to look through old photage to figure out more.
Wow thanks!!!
Instead of that dumb local keep his cool and actually use his brains to kindly educate them he instead gets all hostile like the moron he is. Brah not all locals are like this and I apologize for our own to have not use his brain than his mouth, especially his other half acting the same way. Two idiots that could’ve kindly educate them. They even apologized and said sorry and these two locals STILL continue to be hostile. Brah that’s not Pono at all and that’s a shame for embarrassing not just themselves but Hawaii in general. So again I extend my apologies for these two acting out that way as again not ALL Hawaiian locals act like this.
How safe is to take an uber there, across the bridge?
@@leoboston14 as safe as anywhere else and easy if you don't have much luggage. When you exit the airport building, go to left and turn the corner. You'll see the bridge directly in front of you. On the other side, there will likely be taxis waiting that will offer you a ride. You can call an Uber from there. If you're hungry, stop in to Tacon de Marlin. You'll see then grilling their fish right next to the bridge. Their marlin burritos are legendary!
