BRiGHTBLACK Introspective: Making an A.D.H.D Emulating Video Game
Simon Wilkinson of creative duo BRiGHTBLACK (@brightblack3428) takes us on the journey of how he became a video game artist; what events that lead him to where he is now & how his firsthand experience with ADHD formulated the concept for his latest video game.
The game takes the form of an Arcade Machine that is touring arts festivals & galleries around the UK for the first part of its life.
It is a continuous work in progress so you may notice the game change & grow over time if you have multiple encounters with it.
At some point in the future the game will be made available to play online.

Ferrell Lee Sanders; October 13, 1940 - September 24, 2022) was an American jazz saxophonist. Known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound", Sanders played a prominent role in the development of free jazz and spiritual jazz through his work as a member of John Coltrane's groups in the mid-1960s, and later through his solo work. He released more than thirty albums as a leader and collaborated extensively with vocalist Leon Thomas and pianist Alice Coltrane, among many others. Fellow saxophonist Ornette Coleman once described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world.

I had the incredible honor to see Pharaoh play at the Dakota Club in Minneapolis 7 years ago (2017). I brought friends to the first set. They left, but I stayed to watch the second set. I came back the second day and watched both sets in a row. That was an incredible experience.

I'm a 74 native Chicagoan...born on the southside. I started listening Pharoah Sanders my senior year in highschool. I was 19 then. He studied with Coltrane, but branched out on his own...that's the way it's suppose to be. Spritual Jazz, Pharoah was a master... when i want to get into some deep thought and listen to some heavy, cold-blooded musicians, i reach for Pharoah Sanders. Watching this video chokes me up and makes me weep.

I was quite reluctant to see this video, but was truly moved by it. It brought tears to my eyes. Pharoah Sanders was the closest I had ever been to seeing one of the truly great jazz masters. Having seen him in the early 80's, playing in Grant Park, Chicago, and again at the Jazz Showcase in '04, I wanted to remember him as one of the most Prolific saxophonists of all time. He undoubtedly was. This man was an outstanding musician, and his high energy channeled through everyone in the entire audience. I will always be grateful having had the opportunity to see Pharoah live. Although this video somewhat broke my heart, my memories will never change. As for this last performance, there are no words big enough to describe the awe I felt... RIP

I thankfully was never medicated. I have learned in adulthood to lean into what makes adhd and autism special. When I was younger I would self medicate via smoking weed constantly to "feel normal". But since stopping I have learned to harness the hyper creativity. No longer does it feel like this unbearable flood of ideas fighting to get out, but instead like an infinite wellspring that will never dry up. I think the most valuable thing for a neurodivergent person to do is to just accept themselves. Don't fret about being normal, normal people are average, bog standard. Lean into what makes you special. What I have realized is that I am not the issue, the society around me is. If someone takes issue with how I express myself or how I relate to the world, that is their issue, not mine. Learning that my autonomy is not less than anyone elses was liberating. Cherish what makes you different and use it to make the tapestry that is humanity more diverse.
