Localtalks 03.24 – Green Prefabs: Accelerating growth without destroying the planet
Localtalks 03.24 was be based on the topic of Green Prefabs. Three different modular sustainable construction proposals developed to meet particular building supply challenges were shared. This included, ‘Easy Homes’, which are houses prefabricated in Uganda and based on standardized and digitalised models. The presenter discussed motivations behind the project around closing the affordable housing gap whilst also mitigating the current climate emergency. Localworks’ prefabricated low carbon school model, 'EcoPrefab', was also presented. It has been developed to address Uganda’s severe lack of classroom spaces and simultaneously reduce the high carbon footprints typically produced by conventional construction methods. Finally, there was a presentation on Base Bahay Foundation’s 'Cement-Bamboo Frame Technology'; it is a prefabricated housing system that combines South American building system, Bahareque Encementado, with European engineering and Philippine traditions and environmental conditions. A Q&A session followed the speaker presentations.

    Thanks for this much needed discussion. Much needed because this is a recurring problem I see on most buildings today. In conclusion, people need to be more cautious at the construction stage when water proofing since the go to building materials for finishes on the market are mostly non breathable. Qn: Are the external wall pastes on the Ugandan market considered non breathable?

    From Pigmented breathable plaster to breathable wall cores and actually seeing the powerful opportunities this presents in our context, I am truly inspired. These are discussions that seemingly no one wants to have. The nature of surfaces that we specify in buildings is indeed important in creating healthy and comfortable spaces. While everyone is impulsively importing surface finish solutions, such home grown endeavours truly mean a lot to the local architectural and developer community. I admit there is so much I feel confident to recommend in my designs from here onwards in regard to this presentation. Thank you Localworks for these Localtalks.

    Price? Why are all these videos noninformative...what's the point if you don't display a way of contact where one can reach you and employ you to for their future construction projects.

    this is not good for modernization in Africa and only just a little easier then bricks. but bricks look better. the Chinese build modern schools, the Europeans want Africans to stick to mud. don't see these in Europe

      Hi oneplot. Interesting comment, but not based on facts. The earthbag technology comes from the US where it was very popular especially in the 70's. There are many contemporary examples of earth construction worldwide, with Central European countries such as Germany and Austria playing a leading role. If we want to find a way of reducing the negative impact of human expansion, then building with earth is the future - globally, and not at all restricted to Africa.

      We need especially when it comes to low cost housing. I need to know what is the cost vs the local mad bricks.

    • @achayootto4221
      @achayootto4221 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's ignorant statement. What do you think bricks are made of? They will be using resources around them in a more innovative, long-lasting, durable, economical way.

      @@danielgeorgenahabwe5382 Check the TDS of the material you would like to specify. Zero VOC is preferred but for low VOC levels, check WHO standards for indoor levels.
