Painting A Massive Wave in Oils - Big Sunday
We had the '100 year storm', at the beach where I live last October. 30 foot massive waves that came of nowhere one Sunday afternoon and then completely disappeared again in only 4 hours. It was mesmerizing to watch, the entire town turned out. No-one could believe the sheer size of these massive waves. Luckily the sun cooperated and I managed to take the reference photos that eventually became this original oil painting 'Big Sunday'
"Big Sunday" original oil painting by Toby Carr on stretched canvas. Canvas size: 80 cm x 50 cm x 3.5 cm (31.5" x 19.7" x 1.4"). Comes with signed Certificate of Authenticity.

    Do you have a reference photo I can download?

    • @tobycarrfineart
      @tobycarrfineart 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry, no. I usually draw from a few different photos that I've taken and then sort of put it all together. You can try downloading a image from a free stock image bank online, converting it to black and white in photoshop or something like that and using that as a reference. Just pay attention to the basics shapes, composition, light/dark balance and finally detail. Start as simple as you can and go from there. Looking at the picture in a mirror from across the room works wonders! Good luck.

    Where to buy general's charcoal powder?

    • @tobycarrfineart
      @tobycarrfineart 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Try Amazon, if you have that near you, or any art shop. Worst case scenario, but some vine charcoal and rub it on paper and then collect the powder that way.

    My 3 favorite charcoal papers, are Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed, Canson Graduate Mixed Media Grey tone! amd Canson Universal or 180 Artbook sketchbooks!!! Arches Watercolor Hot pressed, probably works great too, I just love how smooth unique and beautiful, it looks, when you blend charcoal on Artistico HP ! General's charcoal set, a Conte paperstump and a LYRA Kneadable, are always a "must have" supplies for charcoal drawing for me, as is a good quality sharpener,that doesn't break the charcoal tips!

    How did you get such a rich dark color in the background?

    • @tobycarrfineart
      @tobycarrfineart ปีที่แล้ว

      Use lots of layers and 6B pencils. You can't really do it with just one pass, and you need to alternate the angle of the cross hatching to get better coverage. Unfortunately it takes time and isn't very exciting. Be prepared for lots of dust.

    • @tobycarrfineart
      @tobycarrfineart ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, glad you liked the video. I used a 6B charcoal pencil, I think it was a General's brand one. You have to take your time when you're building up black areas, it takes a few layers to get that really solid black, so patience is key. Good luck!

      Thank you. Maybe try using a medium like Liquin with your oil painting. Most colors will dry overnight, whites might take a bit longer, but it really makes the whole process much quicker.

    Hi! how do you blend the charcoal so easily into the darker areas of the drawing? Did you use any kind of solvent?

    • @tobycarrfineart
      @tobycarrfineart ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I just took my time and used a light pressure to apply layers. No solvent. It helps to get up and take a few steps back to see the gradations from a distance.
