Corrections on multiple fronts. 1. Locomotives have been designed locally to handle African Conditions since at least 1884 the manufacturing was often contracted out. 2. A locomotive was designed and built in the Durban workshops and entered service in 1888, named Havelock 3. 1910 Class 2C locomotive designed and built at Durban Works. 4. 1936 Class 20 Designed and Built at the workshops in Pretoria. 5. 1936 Class ES1 was designed and built at the works in Pietermaritzburg 6. 1947 12 S1 type dock shunters were designed and built at Salt River Works Cape Town 7. 1957 Union Carriage & Wagon works was established in Nigel building most of South Africa's Electric locomotives and coaches including the yellow metros you see today. So a good number of locomotives beat this unattractive looking locomotive to the post. The first versatile locomotive built to handle African conditions would like be the Cape Government Railway 6th class of 1884 They were used in Zimbabwe, Angola, Mozambique and even as far up as Sudan, fair to say the TAL 2001 has not yet passed the equator. In summary... an unremarkable locomotive and a strange attempt to rewrite history.
