Bahia Grass: What You Should Know...
มุมมอง 94K9 ปีที่แล้ว
Basic but important information about caring for a Bahia lawn. What you know about this grass type makes a huge difference in how well it does on your landscape!
Phew, I thought that was tree euthanasia you were just going to inject food 👏🏻
Yes, I was trying to save it. Unfortunately, within a year, it had to come down. Poor thing just never did well, and only got worse. At best I may have bought it some time.
Same guy, different TH-cam channel. They never turned into anything, they just died.
Thank you so much.Because I have to hate your grass. And I believe some bugs ate it up because we've been getting a lot of rain here in florida
It can be big pain! And yes, an extra rainy season in FL can really invite the critters! It tends to e a good time to put down a preemptive strike of insect control.
One big downside to this grass is the seed pods grow much faster than the grass. You can mow it and a week later have those little V seed pods are a foot high all over your yard.
I lost an acre of my yard last year due to the severe drought we had in Louisiana last year. I had to lightly till up the yard and replant. It looks good now.....
Should I detach Bahia lawn
The grass first showed is not Bahia grass. Most of the information in this video is not true. Texas A&M Grad.
Thank you for your input. I make mistakes in everything I do, so I'm not surprised if there are some inaccuracies, and I didn't attend an agricultural university. My knowledge base for this video was 15 years of real world Florida lawn care industry experience, and the truths I teach are based primarily on the striking differences between Bahia and St. Augustine (Floratam) turf. Many clients would switch from one to the other without realizing how differently they need to care for them. I respect your education, but I helped a lot of customers with this practical information when I lived there.
Great tips for this specific grade! Never knew that too much watering even more than once per week was too much!😮
Happy to help!
What are they. I gotem
Thanks for this info. Our builder used Bahia grass sod in our front yard and we seeded the backyard after our pool was finished. It’s never gotten very thick so we will try the overseeding you have recommended. We have a lawn service so when we overseed, should we ask him to skip a couple services? How long?
Sorry for the late reply, I lost my login for this channel for a while there. Oops! In a case like that, it's best to discuss it with the lawn service. They sometimes come prepared with alternative treatments that can support new seed or new sod, and could potentially help, rather than skipping a service.
May your tribe increase!
Nasty, ugly seed heads makes a lawn look like sh*t just days after mowing
Oops I forgot to add that line 😝
Good video. Something not mentioned is this grass. Is strong, drought resistant and does a great job of erosion control. Here in Florida, our soil is sandy, do it drains water into the aquifer quickly. This grass, given enough iron, weed control and pest control, will form an incredibly thick and beautiful lawn that doesn't require a sprinkler system and all the cost and maintenance nightmares that come with them. During drought periods, just don't let people walk on it all the time or park cars on it if it goes brown because it's gone dormant and can be killed easily by those things. Again, liquid iron on a water hose is the best thing in the world to green it up and turn it into a thick and lush carpet.
Thanks
Great info! My only caution is to go easy on the weed control. The weed are always at their worst when Bahia is over-watered or gets too much rain. In general Bahia doesn't take the weed control very well, so it's best to keep weed populations down by letting it dry out. (If possible. Can't control the weather. 🙂)
I have this grass in my yard and it grows fast and rich green. Just have some weeds growing in some spots any recommended weed n bug killer??????
I have a think bahia lawn in central Florida. My biggest bug issue is ants. After using EVERYTHING, I've learned pouring liquids like Home Defense down into the holes kills them better than anything else. Don't waste your money and time on the sprayer that comes on the jug, just unscrew it and pour it in until it's flooded down in the hole.
I don't have specific brand name weed killers in mind, but the important thing is to be VERY sure that the label indicates it is intended for Bahia lawns. Selective weed killers abound, but they can cause disaster if they're used for the wrong grass types.
Wish you'd explained how to kill it and get rid of it. Why would anyone choose this grass for their lawn when it grows a foot tall in a few days?
Top 2 reasons bahia is better than anything else: 1) Drought tolerance 2) Erosion resistance
Great tips thanks 🙌🕎🕊️
Anyone know of a good herbicide to kill this grass? For years I've been trying to eradicate it from my lawn. Over the last several years I've been able to control it as we get the needed rain so that other grasses can keep it down. Recently though went through a drought and, as most know, this crap survives best in a drought. Also, as most know, it's almost impossible to mow in dry conditions. Mower blades just push it down. Now it's trying to take over my three acres. Any comments are appreciated.
sethoxydim: I'm in the process of completely eradicating bahia from my lawn. I'm using "hi-yield grass killer Post-emergence herbicide. Its safe to use on centipede and St. Augustine but do not use one other grasses such as Bermuda. I've already killed about 80 percent of the bahia in my yard without effecting the centipede at all. I'm on my second dose of the herbicide now. Make sure you read the label as its very important to apply the herbicide when the temp is below 90* and its not expected to rain for an hour after applying. also, you should wait 7 days after mowing to apply and then wait 7 more days before mowing again. It takes at least 3 weeks for the product to kill the bahia. at first i thought it wasnt working then at exactly 3 weeks i started seeing the bahia dying. good luck!

Thanks for the excellent info !
When you say you should seed.. do you mean just simply spreading over top of existing and/or brown? Or do you mean you have to till and aerate and spread over top of tilled lawn?
Elyse Nantz Normally people just overseed it on top of their existing lawn. Generally a fairly low percentage of the seeds will germinate, so it is recommended to do it twice a year in order to get some results.
LawnGardenLandscape awesome thanks!
Who the heck wants this grass?..we in South Carolina try our best to eradicate it from our lawns ...lol
As the saying goes, one man's junk is another man's treasure.... if you live in a an area where irrigation is impossible or you have areas that will grow nothing else, this grass is a godsend. Most suburban lawns in Texas grow Bermuda grass (which is not even native) but it too can be considered a pest if it's not the intended grass. Crab grass is much hated in most lawns, but it's great for grazing animals as it's full of nutrition and they love it! So yes, there's plenty of people who like Bahia or any other grass, it all depends on your perspective.
I have it and it is a beast of a grass. I wish i could get rid of it easily. I have never seen roots so large and so hard to pull out. It can grow up through anything even plastic.
Perfect for pastures...
I'd love to eradicate mine was hoping thats what info was in this video
Florida
Thank you for info
good vid. don't care how you say it. is this grass prone to a black fungus? I think I have it in Waco texas. the seed head turns black. if you walk through it turns your feet black. I thought I had Bermuda. lots of runners.
Hmm the only thing that I’ve seen like that is Sooty Mold. It comes in on the wind and settles on grass and plants. It is often associated with Aphids, but generally the mold is harmless and can be sprayed off with a garden hose.
Thanks. Very helpful
Jonathan Morris Thank you Jonathan Morris
I turned it off as soon as I heard him mispronounce "bahia". Should bebə-ˈhē-ə-
Clifford Chesser Ouch. Just did the research, and you are right. Never bothered to find out the proper pronunciation. So many people in the lawn business in Florida pronounced it that way, so when I moved there, I just went along with them. Thank you for pointing that out. Now I just have to try to remember... 🤔
BULLSHIT!!!
There aren't two "B's" in bahia www.dictionary.com/browse/bahia-grass?s=t
Who cares.
