    Key Focus Areas in EM Interviews While technical skills are a given, EM interviews emphasize soft skills, particularly: Ownership: Demonstrating your ability to take a business problem from start to finish. Customer Obsession: Showing a deep understanding of customer needs and how your decisions impact them. Other Important Areas: Dealing with ambiguity Conflict resolution Performance management (handling both underperformers and star performers) Hiring and diversity Efficient execution (acting as a "third umbrella" for your team) Key Takeaway: Strong communication and concise delivery are crucial. Avoid rambling and focus on making your points clearly and effectively. The Importance of a Story Bank Build a library of 10-15 impactful stories from your career, drawing from performance reviews and significant projects. Map each story to the key areas mentioned above (e.g., ownership, customer obsession). Prepare for deep-dive questions about each story. Know the details inside and out. Don't shy away from "negative" stories about mistakes, but frame them to highlight your learnings and growth. Mastering the STAR Format The STAR format is essential for structuring your interview responses: Situation: Provide concise context (3-4 sentences max). Task: Clearly state your assigned task (1-2 sentences). Action: Detail the specific actions you took (using "I" statements). Don't be afraid to embellish slightly, but remain truthful. Result: Quantify your achievements with specific numbers (e.g., increased revenue, reduced latency). Key Takeaway: Practice adapting your stories to different questions, emphasizing the relevant aspects for each. Rehearse your responses in front of a mirror or with friends and family to get feedback and refine your delivery. Actionable Insights from the Mock Interviews The video includes mock interviews with three candidates, providing valuable real-time feedback. Here are some key takeaways: Clarity is paramount: Ensure your situation and task are crystal clear to the interviewer. Quantify your impact: Use numbers whenever possible to demonstrate your achievements. Focus on "I" statements: Emphasize your individual contributions, even in team efforts. Expand on key actions: Provide specific details about how you overcame challenges or achieved results. Connect to customer impact: Explicitly state how your actions benefited customers. Additional Tips Don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions if needed. Be mindful of the interviewer's seniority and tailor your responses accordingly. Consider the "story arc": Frame your stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end, highlighting challenges, actions, and positive outcomes. Read the book "Storyworthy" for tips on crafting compelling narratives. By following this advice and diligently preparing your story bank, you can significantly increase your chances of success in your next engineering management interview.

  • @TestingMatters
    @TestingMatters หลายเดือนก่อน

    I started using UI automation tools around 2000, using Winrunner, since then the evolution of software automation tools, including the free open source, has been nothing short of amazing. However, if asked, over the years, what has been the biggest contributor to software quality improvement I would say it's not testing but the evolution of the component based architecture, React, Angular Vue etc. There is an old adage “You can’t test quality into a system”. The focus of this video seems to be e2e of the end product, whereas I see a shift left approach in particular with component testing as being more effective and efficient than waiting for the final product to be available thru the Browser. Once we shift focus to component testing for automation, Cypress (and WebdriverIO) standout. One aspect of Cypress is it runs the tests in the actual Browser whereas Playwright does not, and this (in Browser) is advantageous for component testing. That said I believe Playwright’s experimental component testing feature will eventually move out of experimental, although it's already been experimental for a couple of years:- (Playwright Git discussion Jan 2024) “We (Playwright) were just discussing the component testing and reached a conceptual agreement to make it a part of the official story. It is a big commitment for us, so we don't take it lightly. So far we've been validating our variation of the code splitting where tests run in Node and components run in the browser. At this point we feel like it works well for the users, so we'd like to move forward.” In essence, as a consultant, I could not recommend any specific automation framework to a client without analyzing their specific needs (including future flexibility) and current environment. In addition I would emphasize a “shift left” testing approach reviewing the testability of the current design as an ongoing process improvement initiative.

    • @AdeelMansoor-q4o

      QA in itself is a pretty broad field. If you could find a legit hands on bootcamp that could be a good place to start, but I think they usually over promise. If you have the discipline for self paced learning see the top courses on Udemy. If you are motivated you can get through them relatively quickly and have a broad idea. From there you can start to specialize a little differentiate yourself from the crowd.

I was hoping the question or that someone mentioned, how does a manager deal with leadership, when there's a need for more resources and the team (including development) is overwhelmed? Also, how does manager determine and communicate to the their directors about the length of training on their proprietary systems?

    This is similar to the High Tech downturn of 2003-2005 after the DOT Bomb, and the Aerospace downturn in 93-94. The big tech centers (coastal cities and some central state cities) took hits, and it is part of the economic cycle in the U.S. In Tech it is the areas like Test/QA, Tech Support, IT/Networking, and mid-level management that takes the brunt of the abuse. These are times when it becomes an "employers market" (more supply of people than jobs available) like now versus the "employees market" (more demand for people and increase in jobs). Again, part of the cycle. Now throw in the Outsourcing/Offshoring (like in 2003-2005) binge by upper management to cut costs in order to bolster stock prices and do stock buy backs. And guess what you have where we are now. So, take it from a 35+ years Software Testing veteran that this is a typical cycle that is going a bit deeper than usual. So as the poster with the cat says "Hang in there." As a final note when Alex mentioned how he used some alternative methods of finding job listings he employed tactics similar to what is described in the book "Guerilla Tactics in the job market." I used that book when I started out (before the internet or email), and it can be a bit of a numbers game. You just have to keep pushing.
