Nhega Jatra: A Sacred Reunion of Gods and Villages at Bishnu Devi Temple
In the western part of Kathmandu Valley, Nhega Jatra (also known as Saatgaule Jatra) lights up the hearts of locals as one of the most cherished festivals. Centered around the Bishnu Devi Temple, this three-day celebration carries deep traditions and stories that unite seven villages: Naikap, Satungal, Boshigau, Lho:kha, Tinthana, Machhegaun, and Kirtipur. The name "Saatgaule" comes from these seven villages-'Saat' meaning seven and 'Gaule' meaning village.
Legend has it that in ancient times, seven pigeons fell into the sacred fire during a ritual, giving the festival its unique name. The story also tells of gods and goddesses who were once a family but were separated due to challenging circumstances. Once a year, they reunite at Bishnu Devi Temple, and the locals mark this joyous occasion with devotion and festivities.
Each day of Nhega Jatra has its own charm.
Day 1 (Chooila Boo): The gods are worshipped, and families prepare a traditional dish called takha (boiled and frozen meat).
Day 2 (Muya:): A ceremonial chariot (khat) is created, and special prayers are offered.
Day 3 (Sinaya): The goddess is worshipped, and all the chariots from the villages converge at Bishnu Devi Temple.
Decorated with golden jewelry, sugarcane, flowers, and sacred tikas, the images of gods and goddesses are honored with sacrifices, prayers, and celebration. The festival, filled with music, rituals, and community spirit, comes to a grand conclusion at midnight on the third day.
