Sunrise midsummer 2024
Taken about 5am from a hill on the eastern edge of Dartmoor. The view is looking towards Exeter which lies below the middle range of hills. Takes about 3 minutes for the sun to rise above the horizon. Low lying cloud in the Exe valley.

Cuckoo wrasse in the James Eagan Layne

A short video snap - a cuckoo wrasse in Hold 1 in the wreck of the JEL Liberty ship - Cornwall. The ship was a Liberty Ship and was torpedoed in 1945.
A dive along the Erme Dropoff

This dive followed part of the prehistoric river bed of the Erme. In glacial times the sea had retreated, so this bed would have been part of the river drainage system over the lands of southern Devon. Today, these lands have been flooded by the English Channel as the Ice Age retreated but divers can still see the fossilised remains of the riverbed. Depth about 22m.

The James Eagan Layne was a WW2 liberty ship that was torpedoed in 1945. It is a favourite dive for scuba divers. Located just outside Plymouth, UK.

A dive around the bows of the wrecked German cruiser - the Coln. We dived this at Scapa Flow in 2023. Depth between 20 - 30m. The seabed at 36m. Spot the streaking down diving guillemot at 1:25.

The Coln cruiser is probably the best dive in Scapa Flow. Always a great dive.

The WW1 wreck of the Coln at Scapa Flow is a great dive. Not least because of the sprats that shelter in the open bows of the German cruiser.
Sue's first Eddystone dive

Eddystone is a great dive. The extensive Eddystone reef is about 12 miles south of Plymouth (UK) breakwater. Being well out to sea the visibility is often very good. This dive took place in August 2023 and was the first Eddystone dive for Sue, Julie and Miles. The dolphins appeared midway back to Plymouth.
Diving over the SS Empire Heritage wreckage

The Empire Heritage was part of a convoy going from New York to Liverpool in September 1944. The ship was torpedoed some 10 miles off Malin Head, Ireland and rapidly sank - spilling out its cargo of war-related goods from the USA to the UK as part of the WW2 war effort. It is a stunning wreck to dive. We dived in July 2018.

Flat Ledge is a very colourful and prolific granite reef lying to the NE of St Martin's island. A favourite place for UW photographers.

This dive is on the edge of the UK. Out to the west lies 3000 miles of the Atlantic. But living around these exposed Western Isles, there are a substantial population of inquisitive grey seals.

Dice Rock is the most northern pinnacle of the Hand Deeps complex. Hand Deeps is situated a couple of kilometres west of the famous Eddystone Reef.

This reef lies about 2 miles out to sea off the South Devon coast. The top of the reef is at 18m, and it falls away to a depth of around 40m.

Kim - it's a great dive site but it is subject to tides. Owing to the fact this is the main channel for Devonport Dockyard then we must dive on slack.

What exposure suit did you use and what gas mixture?
About 18:30 on a rebreather. Standard dry suit. Water temp was about 12C.

Not quite the right place for an ancient burial. Just a large rock of granite that goes on deep down.
Does the Foyle sit in 50m of water or is it slighty less, possibly around 45m? I've heard mixed reports on the depth. Thanks
Plan for 50m. The seabed is quite flat around here. You may get 46m on top of one of the boilers. Trimix recommended.
Southernmost point of the UK I think
This is the ship that my Grandparents & 3 Aunts came to Canada from Liverpool, England, in the Spring of 1910 when the ship was relatively new.

after doing a lot of research discovered my great grandfather was on board when she was torpedoed Thomas Evans hulley his part in the crew was as a Fireman. very interesting to see the dive so much still remains down there

Easily one of the biggest troopers of WW1, took 6 torpedoes to take her down. I’ve never heard of any other ocean liner escaping after getting with with 4 torpedoes

About 5 miles offshore.
Brings back happy memories, dived this wreck lots of times in the late 70's & 80's, and was fortunate enough to find the Bell ! We handed it back to Torbay SAC in a large ceremony, and were made honorary life members of the club. Went back a few years ago to their 50th anniversary, where we were made very welcome. Thanks for posting. Ex BSAC 434.

Not on this dive. This was moving westwards from the lighthouse.
