I used to think that living in a house and having modern conveniences was a natural consequence of human progress. The reason everyone does it, is because it would be terrible to be like a hunter gatherer of old. And kinda just assumed that if someone DID want to be a hunter gatherer, still they could. Just nobody would want to. Then I remember when it first dawned on me, that 'the system' wasn't set up for freedom and betterment of mankind. It was specifically designed for slavery. As soon as I discovered the system said it was MANDATORY to live in a house and pay taxes, I realized. I know how to grow all my own food, and live off my bicycle. I need almost no money. At least I would need almost no money, if it wasn't illegal to even pitch a tent on public land while not causing any harm to anyone, not leaving any litter, not presenting a fires risk, etc. Its government mandates that make it impossible to go off grid. You're simply not allowed. They're scared we all would do it. I mean, with my lifestyle, I literally have no effect on anyone, so why on earth should I pay anyone anything?
