During heat treatment, chemical properties also change in a gemstone. Blowing more fuel for the furnace does not acquire complete combustion because all the oxygen is consumed by the LPG gas (or charcoal, mineral oil) for the creation of the heat energy, ultimately the inner atmosphere of the furnace is rich in CO2 and H2, that leads to a reducing environment.

Locally produced “Lakmini” furnaces are commonly used by Sri Lankan gem sellers. They reach a maximum temperature of 1900 °C and maintain controlled atmospheric conditions within the furnace. The reducing atmosphere created inside the furnace is necessary for the development of the proper blue color in geuda gemstones
