Aalavandan, i.e., Literal english translation "One born to rule" is a "Tour de Force" in Kamal Sir's Repertoire with exceptional acting, layered story & experimentation with radical ideas.. This movie is based on a story series written by Kamal haasan in 1980's titled "Daayam," I.e. Dice .. This film has been a highly influential piece of art, so much so that even Quentin Tarantino's Manga Sequence in Kill Bill Vol 1. was inspired by this movie's one scene where violence is portrayed via an Animation Sequence.. This was conveyed by Quentin Tarantino to both Anurag Kashyap & Naman Ramachandran (Sight & Sound Critic) during Cannes Film Festival.. Alavandhan is one of his most ambitious work in terms of narrative storytelling with an underlying theme of "Duality." The twin brother, I.e. bald one plays a paranoid schizophrenic in this movie.. His paranoia about his stepmother(who physically & mentally harrassed him) being reincarnated as his brother's fiance & his self- imposed mission to save his brother forms the crux of the story.. Nandu, i.e., Bald Twin brother in a song claims he is half God & half Devil.. This is not only true about his character but also relationship between both brothers .. Vijay & Nandhu are the God & the beast.. Both brothers have aspects of God & beast in them & when balance is tipped, chaos ensues.. The two brothers are like the two-headed snakes they tattoo themselves in the film or like the two sides of a coin or God with two faces, i.e., Janus Janus is an ancient Roman God who represented the idea of duality.. The two faces of Janus represent Life & Death, past & future, war & peace etc.. There is an allegory in the film where both brothers are like the two sides of a coin or two heads of a single snake.. It's a single coin toss that determines the fate of two brothers.. Their lives were based on chance ... Like coin toss, even dice works on chance or probability.. The two brothers figuratively play a game of dice like in snakes & ladders where they can be bitten by a snake to fall in hell or climb up ladder to reach God ... Both Vijay & Nandu are killers.. One kills out of duty toward his Country I.e. Army Lieutenant while others kills out of Duty for his brethren.. Vijay claims in the movie that Nandhu is a sadistic killer, however this trait is seen with Vijay as well when he kills a terrorist in the movie.. This is the beast within both of them.. What tips the scale is when Vijay makes his fiance Teju Pregnant.. At a Meta level, Vijay is bringing life into this world as God does.. When Nandhu learns about this, he turns into a Beast that is out to Kill Teju & the child Vijay is about to bring into this world.. The two brothers are like the two-headed snakes they tattoo themselves in the film or like the two sides of a coin or God with two faces I.e. Janus Nandhu is stuck in the past, reliving his traumatic memories & confining himself to a self-imposed hell.. Whereas Vijay looks forward to the future to start a family.. Although Nandhu is the protagonist however its Vijay's actions that drive the story, i.e., Driving the beast, i.e., Nandhu.. It's Vijay introducing Teju to Nandu that drives him to break out of the Mental Asylum & go on a drug fueled killing spree. Nandhu believes women are untrustworthy .. However, later in the film, this may seem contradictory when Nandhu lusts for Sharmilee.. But it's Vijay who drives Nandu to lust for Sharmilee.. This is because Nandhu, at one point in time, feels Vijay his brother has found a woman for himself & is happy which Nandu couldn't.. The hallucinations scenes are a testament to Kamal Haasan's brilliant vision.
