Commenting this after seeing the opening hypothetical about comparing Mario as if it evolved like D&D did, while all the aesthetic things about D&D like it's shallow examination of race and identity are byproducts of years from the hobby pushing out discussion, things like market share are a different beast to handle. Mario only requires one person to be convinced at a time, the game teaches you how to play with instant positive reward, table top games do none of this. I spent 6 years designing a dungeon crawler wholly separate from D&D's mechanics and realized there is just no market for it. I have to not only convince one person to learn to play, I have to convince one person to learn the rules to run the game and other people to learn how to play the game itself. I think the indie scene thrives when games are small and a couple of pages but trying to break in as the next complicated options tactics game is a non starter since the effort is astronomically higher than the video game counter parts have to do.

I think that why minorities play less dnd, like in your exemple with your friend, might have less to do with bigot/racist depictions and rules that were or remain in the game itself(you need to engage with the game to know of them after all), but it might have more to do with socio-cultural context: a good question to investigate could be "is dnd a largely middle-class suburban hobby?", which seems like it would'nt correlate much with minorities then ? (the same question could actually be asked for the medieval fantasy genre, and fiction that is not set in a contemporary setting). "Such and such don't play dnd" could be in a similar dynamic to gender-centric beliefs/norms like "boys don't take dance lessons" and the like too. I'm not sure if I'm clear, english is not my first langage. Also, as for the community, one question could be "is there proportionnally more bigottry in the dnd community than in society as a whole?". I don't know the answer to these questions, but they are interesting to me. Interesting video.

im a GURPS GM that is also very disgruntled in regards to DnD - but i gotta at least acknowledge that the "roleplay scenes might just end up with players repeating the exact same rolls! this is because there's no reason not to roll if its not a single-attempt roll" that is NOT a systemic problem, that is bad GMing, no other way to put it. if your players have to repeat a roll that doesnt have consequences on failure - it means you dont even want a roll. like why would you ask for a pointless roll..? thats just a DM's problem, you shouldn't be doing that.

I haven't watched the video yet, but as someone who has played a bit with a group and is planning to hopefully both become a GM and run some solo games for myself, I'm staying very much away from DnD and sticking to rule light systems. I know i prefer the roleplay and political aspects and don't care much about fighting. Too many rules would lessen the fun for me. Luckily nowdays There's something out there for everyone! So many talented game developers who create great settings and systems ( I just bought myself a nice deck of playing cards for my solo games instead of the usual good luck dice, I have enough of them ahah)

Ive noticed when i DM dnd games my players barely roll because rolling stops roleplay from happening and i hate that.

Honestly, it was a pretty good video until the third part. Because I really cant say I see how drow are just 'black elves' considering the fact their skin was charcoal black, to the point it almost seemed shiny because it was just straight up a black ink on the pages. Or how the monkey people from spelljammer are racist because intelligent apes aren't a concept unique to dnd. Planet of the apes exists. But yeah, I liked the first hour. The rest... not so much.

The reason I don't like D&D as much as I used to, at least save for the 3rd party expansion books, is because it honestly feels more restrictive than people want to believe. I won't buy official books anymore because of the shit WoTC did, but I'm more than willing to buy those 3rd party books because I find them to be great additions to have. These days I mainly use D&D as a means to get a feel for the original characters I make.

Tbh, I think the reason for me personally not liking 5e dnd is that baulders gate 3 exists, why would I find a place, Cary equipment, dice, and so much other prep… when I can do a co-op session of bg3?

Good roster

My favorite TTRPG mechanically is Steel Hearts, the main mechanic is that everything is a pool of d6s. 1s are misses, 6s are two successes, anything from 2-5 is one success. The base damage for all attacks is equal to the number of successes you get, so at worst an attack with a pool of 6 dice can be expected to do about 6 damage. Even if you roll all ones, damage is min 1 and even a basic attack will generate resources for the whole party. Some have conditions for extra damage, like +4 for the first instance of doubles you roll, or my favorite attack having +10 damage for each 5 of a kind. I did some back of the napkin math between sessions once and found I could potentially get a pool of over 20 dice for that shot, even at worst that would deal tens of damage and I love that. From there, special attacks often have added statuses that go off regardless of damage delt.

While I do agree that there is a huge balance issue between martials and casters, I heavily disagree with the methodology you used, due to the Warlock being *way* more focused on resourceless damage than casters and having very few spell slots as a tradeoff. Other casters (usually) can't keep up with this damage per round, at least when speaking in terms of resourceless damage Also I disagree that tanking *requires* a taunt mechanic. There are far more ways to tank than just in the MMO sense, for example utilizing sentinel to keep enemies from reaching your backline, or even utilizing grappling

Even within the rules you set, having no boruto, hxh or (to a lesser extent) kagura bachi rep when they’re way more popular than almost every jump series on the roster is insane.

This concept is awesome and this roster is dope but a capcom vs shonen jump game would never not have the big 3, goku or street fighter ryu just being realistic

30:14 - Not so sure about AC making you untouchable. I once played this Alchemist Artificer, and I remember giving her a lot of AC (managed to get to 18 I think), believing it would've kept her *relatively* safe and give her the time to get out of harm's reach. I never felt particularly safe though, as even at lower levels I remember she would get hit quite often, and risked her life on a couple of occasions. 😢

41:13 - Makes me think of when I found out that "taking an Attack action" and "making an attack" were to be considered two separate things, and that by "Attack action" one must understand "an attack performed within a standard action" (as opposed to a bonus one or a reaction). For instance, if your Eldritch knight performs an attack as a bonus action (War Magic) that attack won't trigger Extra attack 🤷

It’s kind of funny, I’ve seen so much discourse online about how much martials suck and how even numerically, they fail to measure up to casters in terms of DPS and defensive capability. However, I’ve yet to play at a table in real life where the martials didn’t consistently have higher DPS and survivability compared to the castors. I’ve come to the conclusion that optimize casters must be better than optimized martials, but a normally built martial we’ll have significantly better, single target, DPS and generic survivability compared to a normally built castor. Let’s be real, there are so many bad spells in the game, and without multi classing most casters don’t have access to heavy armor and shields. The vast majority of players playing casters do not experience this amazing power fantasy that is described online. I’ve lost count of the amount of times that a castor excitedly revealed their new spell only for it to be nowhere near as impactful as they were hoping. - To be clear, I also do not like DND 5e for a variety of reasons, but i feel the need to push back against this popular narrative online that martials are clearly and consistently weaker than casters at everything

I thought youd point out that theres like 100 different causes for wisdom saving throws and like 10 different causes of strength saving throws. Maybe its later in the video idk but i thought thatd be helpful when talking about the saving throw ability score disparity

I had to scream this into my discord chat! Finding characters in media that I saw myself or wanted to be was that big bright neon sign pointing to my gender being different from what I was assigned at birth. I suppose it was because I had a Father and younger Brother that wanted to connect with me that brought me in as a AFAB person into gaming. I can chalk my "Akira" moment to Link (for his purposeful androgyny) and Sheik (a bend in gender expression and queer reading) from Ocarina of Time. Girl games that are now evolving into greater cozy game genre has continued to offer those raised in the teaching of womanhood, a queerer, more trans, more inclusive space for femininity to be explored and positive masculinity to be encouraged. The more games continue to grow and allow the customization of their characters or inclusions of stories, I hope this media will continue to have that bleed into other forms of art. I've noticed an uptick in books that I can finally see myself in, find solace and share with my loved ones.

Honestly, although i like the idea of a "new generation" themed roster, i felt as though it went too much in the Street Fighter 3 route with it. (and we all know where THAT almost got the series...) Capcom side I was able to follow just fine, but a good third or so of the Jump side only had me like "WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE???" Having obscure picks can be fun, and trying to give spotlight to characters who haven't been in that many games is neat in concept, but a fighting game roster NEEDS the flagship characters in it to bring in the casual fans of both IPs as well, ESPECIALLY considering that this would be the first time these two companies would collab like that, so throwing so many obscure, non-fighter picks for Jump, and so little legacy characters for Capcom, felt TOO risky to be a realistic roster, even as far as hypothetical rosters usually go.

Hey, i respectfully disagree with every point you made in regards to race in fantasy games. I also don't believe that a game as racist as you are describing could achieve the level of success dnd has. Thank you for your thoughts.

And this day was the day a figther who achieved what Toji Zenin never became was fully realised. Even if their prowess in battle are equals, i don't think Toji ever see the world the same as Maki does when she liberates herself from the past. Toji knew it when he met his end against Satoru Gojo. When the Strongest awakened, he wanted to bring him down. Even when his senses alarmed him that something was strange, he choosed to fight. Because he wanted revenge against the Zenin Clan, the Jujutsu Society who cast him aside because he bears the Heavenly Restriction. Satoru Gojo was the symbol of this world, his ennemy in this lifetime. He tried, and only his name was remembered as a shadow in the clan... The Zenin clan, something that tortured Toji during all of his life. A trauma he could never pass on. He became the Sorcerer Killer. He sold his son, who bears the precious Ten Shadows, to the clan. He never came back to slaugther it like Maki did. He was never fully gone and rebuilt a life beyond hatred. Even when he built a family, he was going back to kill sorcerers when he lost his wife. And, in the end, he killed a girl... Because of that, i don't think Toji was free like Maki. But, his actions, interestingly, were one of the causes of the falling of the Zenin clan later and the profound changes that happened in the Jujutsu society years later. The death of Riko Amanai destroyed the cycle of sacrifices of girls and women to Master Tengen, conducting to their evolution throught their cursed technique. This death was also the moment when Satoru Gojo became the Strongest. The Alone One, who became the pillar of the new era. A person who was still human, but was seen by everyone else throught this infinity he bears. The day where Suguru Geto lost himself in his racist prejudices on non-cursed users and wanted a genocide for them all. A cruel day for everyone. A day that gave the resolution for Satoru Gojo to prepare the next generation to become stronger and better than him. For them to have the capacity to face the unpredictable consequences of the evolution of Tengen, to confront and win against cursed spirits stronger than ever. And, ultimately, for them to break this corrupted system and don't make the same errors as before. Maki Zenin was one of them. A woman who have the same disability as Toji Zenin. Someone noone in this society could see as a capable sorcerer. I do think the reputation of Toji Zenin, and the fact he showed this immense power during this tragic day, made it possible for Maki to become a Jujutsu Sorcerer. A power everyone in the old generations reject. Interestingly, after this battle with Naoya Zenin, when Maki faced Sukuna in the Shinjuku Shodown. His adversary showed interests in the Heavenly Restriction, praised this power. The King of Curses, the symbol of the golden era of Exorcism, was the one to acknowledged the strenght the conservatives of the Zenin Clan feared and rejected. And, it's also interesting to note the silence of Maki at this praise. Showing her ultimate evolution. That she has completely accepted the past and goes throught it. She has nothing left to prove. She finds a place for herself in this world. She was free at last...

I had read before about how Tolkien's orcs were based on Asian stereotypes of the time and place, but when orcs were brought to D&D those traits fit the American stereotypes for Black people not Asians (and the American stereotypes for Asians were put into elves instead). I figured there would be more but holy shit it was somehow worse than I thought.

I think that Chihiro from Kagurabachi would be a cool DLC pick, idk much about fighting game design but I think a mid range rushdown would be a fitting playstyle for him
