How Sunderland AFC use DATA to find better players - James Young
James Young is currently head of sports partnerships at Genius Sports. Before that, he was recruited by Sunderland AFC (from Deloitte) to set up and lead their new data analytics department as they looked to get out of League one under new ownership.
In this clip, I ask James how he aligned with the scouting and recruitment department with the use of data. The Sunderland squad looks very different now to what it was before the new ownership, and James was someone that played a huge part in that change.

Hi Chris, just watched/listened to couple of your videos. They are truly insightful and interesting. I earlier sent an email, however it might be in your spam. Hope you see this and keep up the good work. Tibo
very very interesting James. Enjoyed the subject and presentation
Thanks for watching Geoff. Glad you enjoyed 👍🏼

Great content though still onfuses me as why we employed Michael Beale as head coach, considering all the data e had
Fair point for sure, we all know how that panned out! I obviously didn't ask, nor do I know Beale personally but I do know he is well thought of in the coaching world and has positive record working with, and developing young players (going from anecdotes from people that have worked with him). RLB been a pleasant surprise so far. Big end to the season incoming!
Absolutely loving the quality of this content 🔥 all the way! Are there any other episodes you’d recommend that are a must-watch for data scientists?
Thanks! I'd say Tom Worville, Sam Gregory, Sam Radford, Rob Suddaby!
what’s the best course at uni to do to become a data or performance analyst
Hard to say which degree would be 'best' as it depends on what type of analyst you would like to be, your location and degrees do change with more being added. I do have a video on this topic though: th-cam.com/video/h1aPgvvDXLo/w-d-xo.html A degree is never going to be enough on it's own though. You need to also gain experience and create a portfolio of work to showcase your skills in what is a very competitive field. Good luck!

I'm a second year student at uni studying business intelligence and data analysis. I'm expected to graduate in 2027. I wanted to ask where do I exactly start and how? I did take python but only the basics. I'm more worried about what I should do after grad to gain experience in the football data analytics field. thank you.
Check out McKay Johns videos on TH-cam if you haven't already. Get some free data and start a bit of a portfolio of football related work. start to share this work to help build a football related network which should help to get you more experience
nice
Thanks 👍🏼
Hi, This might be a stupid question but I thought it’s worth asking. Is it possible to start out commission based in a football analyst role, build a portfolio and then get a full time role with a club, or would that route not be viable?.
Thanks for the comment! Clubs typically wouldn't offer commission style roles. You could potentially earn money freelancing (either with clubs or in the media/journalism space) but even those are not too common from what I have seen. Both would require a lot of groundwork to have a strong and attractive portfolio of work to get the initial opportunity. It's tough for sure. The path you have described with building portfolio and gaining experience is (unfortunately) an unpaid labour of love. At least from my experience...
My son struggles with the age related effect of the game. He’s born in the latter part of year, technically he’s very good, makes near on perfect runs and spacial awareness his great. He reads the game better than I’ve seen any other 6 year olds but when he’s at open days for academies, the bigger stronger children who generally don’t pass the ball at that age much means he can’t showcase himself especially when they realistically only watch a glimpse of the session as they walk around to see other age groups. He often comes away upset and asks why they never pass the ball.
Thanks for the comment Adam. Yeah, that's a tough one, but if awareness and runs etc. are of good quality, these things will be seen by good scouts. And I would imagine that certain (better) open days, would look to assess the players outside of just game situations, so your son can excel there. I'm definitely no expert in talent ID at that age though, but if your son is doing the right things, it will get noticed. More of an issue of keeping moral high if he does dislike not being passed to etc (I remember this feeling!).
@ He often comes off and the first thing he says is “why does no one pass to me” I always try and motivate him and make him understand that this will happen and to just keep working hard. Was a great podcast! Thank you for responding. 🙏🏻

I released a mod for FM24 to add San Diego FC to the game but had difficulty finding the actual staff list for the team. I'll have to add Harry to the team. Probably as "Head Performance Analyst"? If that's a suitable job title.
His job title on LinkedIn is 'Head of player development' but what you have suggested fits. They are in the process of brining in two more analysts too, to help with pre-post match analysis. Plus they will have data personnel too!
@chrisgill_UK The team made an announcement on their site with a couple coaches they've brought in but I guess with the scouting department and analyst side its harder to stay on top of the news for recruitment. Thanks for the video by the way.

How does the recruitment process work? What happens when you have done your analysis? How do Carlisle end up with a player like Georgie Kelly , on a 3 and a half year contract, when he hadn't played an English league game for 90 minutes for years before joining us. Isn't checking injury history part of the process?
Hi Mark, thanks for the comment. I can't really speak on that specific deal (as I wasn't involved) but there are lots of things to consider. Checking injury history would definitely be part of the process but it will often come down to weighing the pros and cons of each incoming player. If that was the case (Kellys history), he may well have been cheaper and seen as a risk worth taking based on the potential upside. It is quite common for a player to sign with more weight on what they did at a previous club (before their last) as their last move could have not worked out for a number of reasons (the style of play at that club, off field factors, personal relationships etc.) ... The thing is though, transfers are hard. The clubs that do the best business tend to be the ones that do the best. As a Sunderland fan, we've had our fair share of rubbish, but also ones that seem pointless on the surface, but come good later, whether that be for us, or as a sell-on. Thanks again for watching the video and all the best for the rest of the season 👍🏼

I recognised one player from the Belgium league..Go Genk
Yes, go Genk!
I mean relegation threatened teams do one mistake, that is they do not sign the players they had on loan most times. Like Burnley in the Championship with Kompany, they had Maatsen on loan. They should've signed him in the PL, considering he was also their player of the year.
The thing is, signing them permanently is not always an option. Not sure on the Maatsen specifics, but as a Sunderland fan, we've had many great loaning signings that simply would never have become permanent...
It's almost impossible to get into a girls academy. The clubs only look for the same type of player, they all play exactly the same way despite being in different positions. The interest has gone up massively however the infrastructure and so opportunities are probably 10 years behind. If you're not a fast winger type how takes on players don't waste your time. My daughter plays defence or defensive midfielder, she takes all this lot on and usually always has clean sheets but never gets into an ETC because they don't value her skill set.
Interesting that you say that... what part of the UK are you from?
@@chrisgill_UK From Sussex, there's very little down here apart from Brighton which as a result is notoriously impossible to break into. I've seen or been a part of the process with Brighton, Charlton, Chelsea and Palace and their youth Academy girls teams are all made up of exactly the same type of player. I was told by someone in the know at Chelsea that the example i gave is the only type of player they're interested in.
Thanks for having me on Chris. Hopefully this can help a few people!
My pleasure Liam, thanks 👍🏼

All clubs have analysts as a key part of the coaching team, and the value they offer on a cost basis can be extremely high (especially as they are usually underpaid). Thanks for checking out the video and I appreciate your opinion, but I must stick up for the analysts here!
