How songwriters can use secondary dominants and the circle of fifths with purpose.
Ever wanted to add a little more flavor to your chord progressions or lead the listener to a climactic moment? As a songwriter, it's something I think about a lot. In this video, I walk you through my thought process as I figured out how to use secondary dominants and the circle of fifths to create drama and surprise to one of my tracks. Give it a watch and add these tools to your songwriter toolkit.

Going to Mississippi - An Original Song by Brian Blickenstaff

The summer I turned 22, I fell in love with a girl who was about to start graduate school in Mississippi. I helped her drive across the country and get settled in a place far from home. This song is about that move. And the girl? She and I recently celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary. Streaming on Twitch five days a week. Join me: www.twitch.tv/brianblick. Inspiring thanks. I don’t know why but big thief talk to me and they are my favourite band. There’s something so special and unique about them.

Thank's a lot, for taking this great song into your discussion. I'd also be interrested to talk about "Depreston" by Courtney Barnett.

Your lesson here is absolutely brilliant, man. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together and share it with us. The last 10 years or so I've made a gradual transition to becoming an Audio Engineer primarily, but I've also been a songwriter and performer for almost 25 years. As a musician, the majority of my projects / bands went absolutely nowhere. I was lucky enough to achieve modest success with a couple of them along the way though. Eventually I came to realize my real talent was on the production side, and although it was a somewhat bitter pill to swallow, I came to terms with the fact that I was not likely to see any level of meaningful success with my own material. I have no intention of putting my time and energy back into the realm of songwriting, but I can't help but wonder if things would have been different if I had access to this sort of information and perspective back then.. I enthusiastically believe that strongly in the lesson you're giving here. I couldn't possibly put a monetary value on this sort of advice. While it sounds relatively straightforward, when you're young and trying to figure out how to improve your skillset as a songwriter, it's so easy to get lost in the minutiae. Especially back when I was coming up back in the early aughts and TH-cam wasn't even a thing. *Young songwriters- this information is legit invaluable. Really let this soak in. Practice it. Learn it. Understand it.* Again Brian, thank you so much for sharing this with us! And I apologize in advance for the verbose, long-winded comment, lmao.. Definitely another reason I never broke through as a songwriter, I struggle mightily with keeping my writing efficient and succinct. I lose the attention of the listener / reader frequently.

Your take(s) on this , really good. I’m not a Springsteen fan but there’s a lot in this that is, that I wonder if there was any influence. You were talking about the “Oh, baby …” part and what gets me, and I think it was a choice that has an answer in it (if we knew why, the choice) to have that delectable and nearly imperceivable “And I say, “Whew, (so quiet) baby…”. I’m babbling but I love this song. Thanks for “covering” it on your channel.

Gorgeous voice, chill vibes, and a nice little skewer at that ordinary suburban mind: sign me up for a peculiar monastic life (though Cali is getting too pricey for hippies).

Thanks so much for the video, that was really informative and I enjoyed it a lot. Could you post the chords (beginner here) as other videos use the standard chords and you nailed the authentic chords of the song. Whether that is another video or just a list/pictures, it would be greatly appreciated. Also recommend checking out an artist that has been compared to Big Theif by BBC Radio 6. Bess Atwell, her album Already, Always is really good.
