Cape Town Cycle Tour 2024 Full Group 1A Footage
Full race footage in 4K with front and rear camera views of starting group 1A, with my group merging with the front of group 1B through to the finish.
If you were in the rear of group 1A or in group 1B and feature in the footage let me know in the comments at what time and in what kit
Thank you to all fellow participants for fast but fun and safe riding, it made my second tour most memorable. I hope to be back in 2025 to improve on my 2024 time of 3 hours 14 minutes 5 seconds and get closer to that 3 hour mark
I finished in 1113th place out of 17924 finishers and in 82th place out of 1930 in my age category 55-59
Special shout out to the super quick 1B rider in the yellow Sci Con kit - sorry I didn't have the legs to stay with you but enjoyed the short lived 2 up none the less. Also to Brent Pheiffer of Wayne Pheiffer Cycles for that magic helping hand over Smitswinkel - we seemed to stay close from then on to the finish. And to my PE cycling friends for making my stay memorable thank you Avron, Brian and Ian and the rest of the crew for all the race advice and support
Of course thank you to my Coach Bob Tobin and Matt Bottrill of Matt Bottrill Performance Coaching for getting myself and the bike to the start line in the best possible condition - Matt, your aero handlebars worked a treat
The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust put on another world class event - congratulations and thank you to them for all the hard work involved to ensure it all ran smoothly

Thanks for sharing this excellent video Richard! I last rode the long route in 2022. I did the 42km in 2023 and 2024 so I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video to familiarise myself with the efforts needed at various points of the route. I am looking forward to training this route as regularly as possible to complete my 24th CTCT long route in 2025.
Hi Granville. Thank you for your kind comment and am really pleased you have found it useful. But am super impressed that you have done the long route 23 times! Training for the event gives me a bit of focus to get me through the long UK winter now 👍 Good luck with your training for 2025 and hope to see you on the start line!
Awesome training video, well done. This is helping me with my training for next years event on rainy days😀💪
Thank you for the kind comment. Great to hear you liked it and that it’s helping the training, I do the same! Good luck for 2025 👍
Hi Richard. I went through your video. You are creating content on a whole other level. I'm on a hero 7 Black. I usually go through 2 batteries. I like all the detail like the maps and the info during the race. And the different angles is a nice touch. Well done on beating your previous time. Maybe next year sub 3...😜 I'm going to try it on a road bike next year. Busy getting used to one at the moment. My body is not finding the transition to be smooth. Lower back is feeling it. And the legs are working much more than I thought it would. Great workout though. Looking forward to next years Cycle Tour video.
Thank you for the great feedback it’s much appreciated. It’s a fabulous event and I enjoy videoing it each year. I used a software package called Telemetry Overlay for the graphics and edited on FCP. And an external battery to get the run times needed. Am hoping to go sub 3 but as you know it’s not easy and needs a bit of luck at least for me! Getting a good position on a road bike is key for comfort maybe with the help of a bike fit. Then build up the ride times as you know. Hope it goes well and maybe see you at the event!
@@mangofilms1161 I am almost 100% sure we will not see each other next year. But maybe if I do good on the road bike I'll see you in 2026.
@@WestCoastMountainBikerFCP is the Final Cut Pro video editing software..
Oh man! Got as far as the blue route and my back wheel packed up. Would've been no. 20. Great footage to motivate for nex year
Thank you I hope you get number 20 in the bag in 2025 . Fabulous achievement to do so many! Have a 2024 video as well, which was my second event
Stumbled across this and found it very enjoyable. Bucket list event.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it. It’s certainly a fabulous event!
Wow, super cool footage! Congrats on a superb race as well. So good!!! Did you use Telemetry Overlay to bring it together?
Thank you, much appreciated. It’s a tough race but worth it for the excellent organisation and spectacular scenery. Correct yes used Telemetry Overlay for the data visualisation and then edited on FCP, and created 5 camera streams that I cut between for the different views. Ran two GoPro 12’s with external extender batteries for the footage
Great vid! Watching this on my home bike in canada, I did arguses when I lived in SA :)
Hi Shaun. Yes I often rewatch it on the home trainer as well. Glad you enjoyed it it’s such a super event. I videoed the 2024 edition as well, managed a pb of 3.14 this time 😊
Great footage of this iconic event!
Thank you glad you enjoyed it. I think it’s the best event of its kind in the world- hope to be back in 2025!
@@mangofilms1161 I'd love to ride it again in 2025 as well. I last did it in 2015 when I was living in CT (albeit the shortened route due to the fires) and I also rode it as a 12-yr old back in 1987...it was 104km back then and finished in Camps Bay
This is just fantastically good video footage, thanks for uploading - I use it on my indoor trainer quite a bit!
Thank you Nicholas for your kind comments and glad you are finding it useful - I do the same myself! Hope to be back for another go in 2025 👍
Great footage… especially through Epping town & the Forest👍😊 I’ll be spectating & cheering this Sunday from the local Fayre they set up in Epping 🚴♂️👏
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. Let’s hope any rain holds off!
Hi there! Was it possible for people from later waves (pink) to join your actual wave?
I think not, earlier waves can join later though - good luck 👍
@@mangofilms1161 thank you! Just asking because I see that you kept overtaking pink people and also a few of them started next to you. And yes, my wave is a pink but my pace would be to finish it in less than 5 hours.
I’ve heard that the entry into the pens will be more controlled this year but last year it seemed to be less so..When I did the Cape Town race it was strictly enforced but not at previous editions of RL, if that helps
Brilliant that Rich, great time too. 👏
I think it’s funny watching boy racers who have never raced think they’re in a real race 🤣🤣🤣🤣
This might be a stepping stone to racing’s. What’s funny about that?
Well mr big know it all i actually know this guy and i bet your pound to my Greand he would piss you right off! And he races too
Excellent work Richard well done mate
This is a really good video. I’m also doing it this year and aiming for a similar time. Me and a few club members have all entered, hoping we get wave A. How strict are they with starting in the correct wave?
Hi Connor, thank you glad you enjoyed it. The starting procedure is a bit more informal than the Cape Town race I did. But as a faster rider it’s worth getting into the early slots to get a good group. The seeding process seemed a bit vague though better last year than in 2022… Good luck!
Awesome video, what software do u use that shows ur speed?
Glad you enjoyed Elroy 👍. This video was done with Garmin Virb. I will use Telemetry Overlay for the footage from the 2024 race though
So enjoyed that from UK. Brought back memories of my 9 Argus rides 20 years ago. Never quite managed a sub 4 though. Well done.
Thank you David, am very glad you enjoyed the video, it’s such a fabulous event. I rode this year as well and will do another video when I’m back in the UK. Went 5 minutes quicker in group 1A this year so am still searching for that elusive sub 3 😊
What happened to the 42km race
I think it was run separately- the video is the 109km version from last year
Awesome video! from a Saffa living in Xiamen, China (Where all the carbon wheels are made)
Thank you - glad you enjoyed. Will do a 2024 one - was quite hectic in the winds this year
Hi Craig glad you enjoyed. Yes am off in 1A this time, have a good safe ride 😊
Enjoyed this! Thanks! See you at the start
Wow super cool, thank you!
Brilliant footage, if you happen to do 2024, please see if it would be possible add a view of the map to give context on where you were per time..
Thank you Alfred, glad you enjoyed it. Yes plan to run a different overlay for 2024 that has a map 👍
Excellent thanks
Thank you glad you enjoyed. Not long to go to 2024 edition 🚴🏿
Well done for an excellent and inspiring video! Hope your CTCT 2024 is an even greater achievement!
Thank you Carel- pleased you got value from it. Yes hoping to go well this year, will run cameras again - good luck if you are riding also 👍
Did you know the fella in the black kit and white socks or was he just a good wheel to follow? 😂
Hi @Connor French. Think it was just a case of following wheels at that point, making sure I kept up!
Well done on your ride and great video! Which app are you using for the telemetry overlay?
Thank you, much appreciated . Am back this year riding again, it’s a fantastic event. Hope to go in 1A this year. I used Garmin VIRB , but this year will use the telemetry overlay software- you can see the difference with that on my Ride London video. It’s much more customisable
@@mangofilms1161 Good luck with your 2024 prep, hope I see you on the road, I'll be on my MTB as usual 😉 I also use Virb but it has so much issues lately, will look into other software options 👍
I saw your camera battery died at Houtbay. I use a small 5000mah powerbank attached to my handlebar which keeps the camera battery charged! Love your commentary notes 👍👍
@@cptmtb Yes I think I ran the camera too long in the start pen - am taking a nitecore 10000mah battery this year that is lighter as well. Glad you watched through and liked the commentary notes and good luck to you as well - will look out for you
Great ride Rich 🙌
Respect
Thank you @rauf800. It’s a fantastic event to do 👌
Fantastic footage and pacing. What camera did you use to record this? 3.5+ hours of footage at 4K is very impressive. Did you use an external battery pack? If yes, which one? Thanks and stay safe!
Thanks was pleased with the time, glad you enjoyed watching. I used a GoPro 10 hooked up to a GoPro Volta strapped to the handlebars to get the extra battery life - a bit bulky but seemed to work!
love the metrics layout. what did you use to get the map super-imposed in realtime onto your overlay? what software is that?
Hi, thank you. It’s something called telemetry overlay goprotelemetryextractor.com/telemetry-overlay-trial. Has lots more features than Garmin Virb
@@mangofilms1161 thankyou for replying ~ subscribing ~
Brilliant ride, thanks for sharing. May I ask how often you had a gel please to top up your energy.
Thank you, no problem 👍 I took high carb drinks plus about 2 gels/energy bars an hour. Pays to eat drink from early on as well….
Thats a lot of gels! But definitely paid off well done

Cheers Leigh it’s a great event - training for 2024 has started!
Great work on this video and well done on your cycle man.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. It’s a fabulous event to do
Well done! I was meant to be in yellow A wave but missed that and started in yellow B. Managed to get in a good group after 30-40 miles or so and came in just under 4:25 which I was very happy with.
Thank you Warwick. Under 4.25 is a good time 👍
@@mangofilms1161 Over that distance the difference between our times could be as simple as which group you manage to get in. I also didn’t stop for a bottle refill/change like you did so maybe that was the only difference. 👍
How the fuck did that car get there
Well done, great footage ,at least the rest of the guys didn`t jump you,,brings back many happy memories of my own rides at the Argus,CTC, many years ago, I did manage a 2:57 on one ride, conditions were good...I was living in P E then, good cycling scene there then.
Hi Bruce, thank you, glad you liked it. I knew the start would be hectic! I just had to pace it and latch onto a group on the blue route. I’m lucky enough to know some cyclists in PE when I visit there from the UK. Have been along Marine Drive and over Maitland a few times… Well done for being in the sub 3 hour club. Hope to be back in 2024. By far the best event I’ve ever ridden 👍
I so enjoyed this video, footage was great, forsure I will be cycling the Argus for the first time and I haven't been cycling now for a year, very inspiring 👌👏👏👏👏
Awesome video. I see myself a few times. Do you have any more videos of the race posted?
Hi Nick. Your very kind, thank you very much. I’m working on a full length video with front and rear camera view. I have a couple of other short videos on the same playlist at the moment. What colour jersey were you wearing, I can see if I have any other footage of yourself Regard’s Richard
