there’s a little pond up stream at the confluence with alhambra creek
@Indiebassin Thank you! I noticed that one as well, but wasn't able to fish it that day since I was pressed for time. If, in the future, I run out of ideas or creeks to fish, I might check out that little pool.
@ lmk if u do because i bet there’s hella bass in there
@Indiebassin Thanks! We'll find out eventually if there are any decent ones hiding in that pool. Cheers!
That's a crazy looking place to fish! Looks like a set location for an episode of walking dead lol. Some beautiful little bass and again your casting is amazing to not get hung up in that messy environment
@DrDitchpickle Thanks! You're not wrong about the post-apocalyptic vibes - it's a totally different world down there - and these little bass are surprisingly resilient, they've adapted perfectly to their "Walking Dead" setting. I bet it makes you appreciate the vast array of clean waters you have nearby for fishing. Those overhanging branches and obstacles really keep you on your toes with every cast and dealing with tight spots like this definitely helps to build accuracy! 🎯
@Astrofishicist right on. I've been looking at some spey and skagit casting technique videos lately. Fascinating how these casters manage to fly fish around hanging brush with no room to back cast
@@DrDitchpickle Yeah, incredible accuracy, right?! They've probably been practicing their casts for years. Will you be getting a spey setup next?
@@Astrofishicist oh I did put a single hand spey line on my 5 wt rod. Rio brand. Fantastic stuff
@DrDitchpickle Cool. I assume there will be a video about that on your channel shortly, right?
where is this?!
Where are the parents of the small bass at? Thx for the vid.
@SlowCarsFastSFV They probably moved out, cause the creek got too small for them. Cheers!!
Are your waders needle proof?
Let's hope so!
Gotta love a chonky blue gill 😂
@kaffall Absolutely!! Chonky bluegill are the best!
Where is this at
Epic! Fabulous fantastic
@DrDitchpickle Thanks!
@Astrofishicist was that a 4wt rod? Serious bend!
@@DrDitchpickle Right?! No, it's my 2wt that I use all the time. I prefer to fish super light and, fingers crossed, so far never had case where the 2wt was outmatched, even when catching carp.
@@Astrofishicist right on. My favorite is 3wt. I do have a 2 wt. Maybe I'll revisit it soon
@@DrDitchpickle I don't believe there's such a big difference between a 2wt and a 3wt. I think what's more important is the action of the rod. I like to fish moderate or medium fast.
Man what an awesome outing! Those tilapia are super cool. Love the underwater release.
@DrDitchpickle Thank you!! I was happy to catch some tilapia, but man, these slimy boogers are even more difficult to hold than carp. They slip right out of your wet hands!!
@@Astrofishicistoh BTW i forgot to mention that double bass catch! That was epic.
@DrDitchpickle Right?!?! Up to that day I've only seen it on other videos where people fish for trout with dry-dropper rigs, so I was beyond thrilled to double up. You should try it too, in one of those small ponds I keep watching you fish. I wish we had that many ponds here!!
@Astrofishicist oh man. We have tons of tiny ponds in southeast va. My Google maps pins are in the hundreds
@DrDitchpickle I'm so jealous!! I'd be fishing a new spot all the time. I assume you have many small creeks nearby as well, or am I wrong?
Nice video man! It's nice finding random spots like those creeks in Los Angeles.
@FlyByFrancis Thank you! Yes, I love those tiny overgrown and difficult to reach creeks. I'm hoping to find more of them in LA.
Where in the la river is this ?
Where is this?
wooooo!!! i was on a dink fest there last year, nice to see they are gaining some size. *subbed
@losangelesbfs Thanks so much for the sub!! I've watched a lot of your videos, good stuff! Yeah, the 15 inchers, which is around the max size for that shallow creek, are picky and with all the fishing pressure during the summer they're challenging to catch. Plus the dinks there dominate the water there. Still fun to catch though.
Nice bass!!
Thank you!!
Great stuff! Just migrated to flyfishing from ultralight trout and surf fishing, so this is right up my ally. Last week I tried flyfishing for Mullet in the San Gabriel River just up from the power plants in Long Beach, but no luck yet. I have both a 5wt and 7wt outfit I recently purchased just waiting to catch their first fish. The 7wt has sinking line, hoping to score a Corbina in the surf. Too warm for local Trout plants, so looking for fun spots. Thanks for this!!
@Will_H800 Brilliant, I hope you don't give up and catch your first fish soon!! 5 and 7 wt is quite a bit heavier than I fish, which is mainly 2wt (I know for saltwater fish you probably need something with a bit more backbone), but it's probably better for beginners, especially if you're already fishing with a sinking or sink-tip line. Eventually, I'd like to try saltwater fishing as well, that's probably when I need to get some heavier equipment. Also, DFG will probably stock the local ponds and lakes with trout soon. I believe they have a planting schedule on their website. Cheers!!
@@Astrofishicist Not giving up for sure! I'm also going to give the San Gabriel River a try shortly for Tilapia on the light rig, as I hear Nymphs work there. I did pick up some sandcrab and ghost shrimp flies to try out for Corbina, so I hope to score one soon. Thanks for the reply!
@Will_H800 Anytime!! Hope you get your first Tilapia, Mullet, or Corbina on the fly soon! Please keep me posted on your San Gabriel expedition goes and how the shrimp and sand crab flies work for you. Cheers!!
Question - do you fish strapped in the LA river?
@2Skinny What exactly do you mean by 'strapped'??
@@Astrofishicist With a pistol.
@2Skinny It may be a tad bit naive, but I never felt I needed one.
Can you give me an idea of where access points are? Thx
@DavidValazza Certainly. Any bridges that cross the river at the re-naturalized sections will serve as access points. My best advice is to use Google satellite images, zoom in, and check out the sections. Also, use Google street view and look for nearby parking. That's what I do. Hope that helps!
You should try Whittier Narrows area starts off of Rush St. in Rosemead. Love what your doing!!
@UNCLELEMUR Thanks so much!! I quickly had a look via Google Maps. Hopefully it's enough water to hold fish year-round. The homeless there aren't hostile or anything, right? I spotted an encampment when I zoomed in on the satellite image.
@@Astrofishicist Just keep a distance from them and respect them as times are hard. I know below where it starts off Rush St. down below there is a huge pool and a Water Treatment plant that has a discharge below the 60 FWY. Worth a look.
@UNCLELEMUR Thank you, I greatly appreciate the follow up! I have some experience with the people who live at the LA River, so I'm too worried. Typically they're friendly and interested in what I'm doing.
It's a baby, but catching bass is fun regardless. Nice!
They don't get very large in those tiny shallow creeks.
where exactly is this
Thanks for the video. I just found your channel. Are you using a 3 or 4 weight?
@kevingarrett9694 Awesome! Actually I used a 2 wt in this and most of my other videos.
Awesome video! Dude that algae is such a nightmare. I call it pond snot lol. Great catches! I'm curious about your gear. Line. Leader rod reel flies and all. Maybe you can give a run-down of your setup on a future video. Impressive casting in that jungle!
@DrDitchpickle Thanks mate! Yeah, it's a total nightmare but they're all hiding right underneath it. Pond Snot is the perfect description!!! I can tell you got plenty experience battling that green nightmare!
@DrDitchpickle And yeah, I'll be happy to go over my setup, which, btw., entirely depends on the location I'm fishing. It was great to see you take the ol' fly rod out for a spin! Please, for me, can you try to point the rod tip directly at your fly and strip set the hook when you get a bite instead of lifting the rod? I really hope that will get you more fish (I know you already catch plenty though); and if it works, I'm hoping you can make a cool video out of it.
@@Astrofishicist right on! I'm totally not skilled at fly fishing but yeah I catch a few. I need to practice fly fishing more but it's really frustrating. I get snagged all the time and knots on my leader. I appreciate any advice! Thanks
@DrDitchpickle The knots may come from your loop being too tight. Yeah, it's all about practice and there's no substitute for it, other than putting in the hours. But the pay off can be rewarding, landing the perfect cast right underneath a bush/tree or ambush spot and connecting with one of those biggins!!
@@Astrofishicist thanks man! That tip about stripping the line to set the hook sounds perfect. I'm so used to pulling the rod for hooksets from spinning gear and baitcasters. Definitely gonna try to keep that in mind for flyrod
Somewhere by the 605 fwy?
Are these all LA County creeks? Some good ones in Ventura County?
@soccercoach9803 Hi, yes, these are all in Los Angeles. I wanted to explore all possible roadside ditches in LA first before venturing towards Ventura and other neighboring counties. Also, I noticed that some of the watersheds in Ventura Country are closed for fishing because of the pesticide runoffs from nearby farms. I hope not all creeks over there are badly polluted, since I would like to find some places to fish in that area as well. :)
@@Astrofishicist They are not there are quite a few you are able to fish and they are full of fish...literally some pretty amazing spots for bass, catfish, sunfish, and carp. I have fished in LA at the creeks near balboa lake but outside of that I haven't explored many others in the area. seems like you do some bushwhacking to get to some...Ventura county more easy to access.
@soccercoach9803 Thank you so much for the insight!! I will look into it again and hopefully I will find a few locations where fishing is allowed. And yes, I get a good workout in every time I have to crawl through the brush to get to the next pool or spot. Easy access would be nice but hopefully that means the waters there are not overrun with people.
Nice video I like to fish in our little rivers and natural creeks here in LA too.
@CarlosReelz Thank you! Yes, the smaller creeks don't always hold the largest fish, but they are extremely fun to fish, aren't they?
Where is this? By Balboa
Gonna find a body next my boi
@bilbobaglens That will be the day...
@@Astrofishicist stay save and fishy brother
@@BilboOutdoors You as well. And tight lines, hope your channel takes off!
Nice catch
Thank you very much!
Thank you for sharing your fun day. Have you try carping with a 5wt?Carp is the most awesome to catch in LA river; that’s why it’s the poor man’s bone fish, taking you into the backing with their runs
@jcmsu2002 Thank you! I've been catching a few carp there as well, but on my 2 wt. They're strong and fight well. Feel free to check out part 2 to this video, there should be two carp in there, nearly back to back. There are also a few carp in my other videos.
Don't grab the fish like that when you're releasing them. Just let them go and they'll swim away. Great video though!
Awesome video.. catfish on the fly is too cool! Those things are so fat! Fun stuff
Thank you, my friend!! I love catching bullhead on the fly and the channel cat get large there, like the 20+ inches I caught in the other video. :)
Can you give me a shout out
Yah that’s a pretty one
Thanks; yeah, it was a beautiful fish!
Biggest la river bass I e ever seen
I don’t know who you are, but in 15 seconds I knew that you’re a true fisherman. You love the sport and respect the animals. Excellent.
@kaffall Oh wow, what a fantastic and inspiring compliment!! Thank you so much! Yes, I'm a big advocate for catch and release and prefer to fish with barbless hooks.
Dude. Your casting technique is on point! I wouldn't even consider casting a flyrod in all that brush. I have a hard time with the flyrod even around banks with tall grass lol. Great video. Really enjoyed your adventure!
Thanks so much!! Years and years of practice, my friend, and I still think some of my casts need improvement. Also, believe it or not, I used only this one fly throughout the entire video; I only got hung up three times but managed to retrieve it. I'm amazed how well this fly held up. Anyhow, I need to catch up on your videos; I'm excited to watch the Panfish Party!! I don't know how you do it, though, making a new video every three to five days; wow, you must be a fishing machine!
Lol. I try to fish everyday if I can. And speaking of fishing machines. I actually own a 1976 st croix fishing machine! Awesome rig
Oh man, I wish I could fish every day; that's the dream!! And it's awesome that you find the time to get out on the water daily. Do you still use that fishing machine, or is it a collector's item for you?
Piru Creek?
Can you do an LA river catch and cook?
Nice blue gill
@jubayvang Thank you!
Where is it exactly)
This is so cool. That s a solid fish.
Thank you! Yeah, that was a nice catch. And a good fighter as well.
Nice channel
Thank you!! Glad you like the videos.
10 second retrieve with a real rod.
What else only takes Ten seconds ?
😂
Good job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great catch, but too small.
Thanks, but not too small for me.
Great catch.
Thank you!!
Nice fish!😊
Thank you!!
Awesome
Thank you!!
Love the content man! I’d love to know what fishing waders and boots you use
@NaturalistArt Thank you so much, I'm happy to hear people love my videos! Believe it or not, the waders I currently use are some cheap boot-foot nylon waders I got on Amazon for $10 when they were on sale. I did not have lot of money to spend on expensive waders, although now I wish I had a pair of breathable waders, especially during the hot summer months.
@@Astrofishicist I love your videos for sure, I just got back from the la river this morning near balboa lake and caught 15 largemouth bass. I caught 11 on a spinning rod and 4 on a tenkara rod. Your content made me want to get out there and catch fish. Now I want to get into the water at certain parts of the river. So stoked 🤩 keep the content rolling man
@NaturalistArt That's awesome!! I hope you got some good ones. These days the river is full of 3 to 6 inchers that bite on everything you throw.
@@Astrofishicist Thanks, yeah they were mostly 10-12 inches . It was a awesome morning on the river
Great Video!! I would guess the Catfish length about 17 inches
Thank you!! And good guess on the channel cat; only a few inches off. It was a phenomenal catch, though, and it made my day, heck, my entire weekend!
