    Wow! This wasn't a small error by Honda and its supplier. Just purchased the HRN216 from Home Depot for $599.00 and hoping it wasn't affected by the recall. I am ok. Much respect, I can see this is not a 5-minute job. Thanks for creating the video it helps me learn about my mower.

      Wasn't an error by Honda it was their supplier. Honda saw the problem and has addressed it and made it right.

  • @BSD2000

    My HRN216 is two months old, I used it about 5 times and now it's surging. Is this going to be a common issue every so many weeks or what? Why are Honda mowers ranked so highly if my 2 month old lawnmower has issues already?

    • @BSD2000
      @BSD2000 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe Honda should include a carb brush cleaning kit with each lawnmower. TH-cam is filled with videos explaining how to 'fix' surging issues. My eleven year old Husqvarna mower with a B&S engine always started on the second pull and never had a surging problem. The deck rusted through from sitting outside in the rain and snow most of it's life, but I never had a single issue with the engine - and that thing had a cheap plastic carb!

    • @duanesliftedtrucks
      @duanesliftedtrucks 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @BSD2000 The surging is in the carburetor. The carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned. Maybe the fuel needs to be changed too, I would use synthetic fuel in the future

    Great video, and as everyone knows, iced coffee always makes everything go more smoothly. Here are a few comments and tips I'd like to add for the benefit of your viewers. First, that jet that you mention at 13:00 is called the pilot jet, also sometimes referred to as the idle jet. Ninety-nine percent of the time, that jet is the cause of surging on small engines. The size of the hole, (the orifice) in that pilot jet on many carburetors is around .013 (thirteen thousandths of an inch). To put that into perspective for the uniformed, that just a tad more than 4 times the thickness of a human hair which is about .003, or three thousandths of an inch in diameter, and is also about equal to a standard sheet of paper, (also .003 thick). Some pilot jet holes run a little bigger at .015 to .020 in diameter, and that screw above with the spring is the idle screw. To be safe, a good way to set the idle screw back where it was is to look at a mark or make a mark on the top of your screwdriver handle before turning it. Then gently screw it in all the way until it stops, counting the number of turns as you go. DO NOT FORCE IT WHEN IT STOPS. Mark the number of turns down, and when you go to put it back in, screw it in until it stops, put that mark on your screwdriver handle on top, and then back the screw out, counting the turns as you go, stopping at the correct count. For those very small drills, great for cleaning jets, go to eBay and type in, "Gyros #61 to 80 HSS drills" in the search bar. Then do a search for "Pin vises" needed to hold those small drills. Gyros also makes the pin vises. The #80 drill is the .0135 diameter drill I mentioned earlier, and the #61 measures .039 in diameter. Finally, one more tip for the uniformed; when buying tools, the letters HSS stands for High-Speed Steel and is the only metal/material you want when buying tools like, hex key wrenches, (commonly called Allen wrenches, which is a brand name), drill bits, easy outs, taps and dies, and many other kinds of tools. DON'T EVER buy carbon steel tools of any kind; if you do it would be much quicker to just throw your money out the window! Again, good video.

    Three points: (1) Using M6-1.0 threaded rods as temporary guide studs is genius! I had thought about permanently replacing the original bolts with threaded rod, but there is simply no need to do so, as you clearly show. Using threaded rods as temporary guide studs allows one to bypass the whole gasket drama that goes with every HRX217 Honda carb overall. BEAUTIFUL! (2) Using a wire to hold the threads of the main jet as you unscrew it is also a great technique. You are the only person on TH-cam I have seen do this, but it is so simple and so helpful. I use a bent paper clip or a plastic toothpick for this purpose, as I have done for years. Every time I see someone shaking or beating their carburetor to get the loosened main jet out, I just shake my head. It is simply not necessary -- as you clearly demonstrated. (3) I strongly agree with your use of engineered fuel when storing any small engine equipment. I started doing this about five years ago and all my equipment starts right up every time I need to use it. Further, I use only engineered fuel in my equipment AND the carburetors stay clean and run well for years, not just months. (I have had it up to here 😡 with ANY gas station fuel for my small engines.) Many thanks for the video. 👍👍👍👍

No torque wrench on engine internals is a no-go, "I just go till it feels good", did a terrible job of cleaning surfaces prior to reapplying silicone and I bet if you took the head back off you'd find the oil channel blocked (at least partially) by silicone even though he used a screwdriver to remove some extra (when it gets tightened back down it'll squish back in, didn't clean the connecting rod and head bolts prior to reinstall (just love loctite over oily bolt threads, drops the rocker arm pin in the dirt on the mower deck twice and doesn't bother to clean before installing. I hope this isn't your mower, and I'd rather do this myself than let him fix my $1K mower. Seems like a really nice guy, but needs to pay better attention to the details. I did like the way he kept the connecting rod cap in the same orientation and being careful on the timing.

      It's not the gears or teeth it's the hole that is in the plastic gear/cam which the metal decompression pivots in. The hole is too small when it was made by the outsourced manufacturer. The decompression sometimes will not pivot back to release the compression. The other manufacturers are blaming the metal tolerance of the decompression pivot, which is too big. Honda has a good fix to the problem. It's too bad that Honda will no longer manufacture lawnmowers.

    Thanks for making this video! Recently had my mower serviced for the camshaft recall and was wondering what was involved. My mower seemed to be functioning properly, but I still decided to have the recall work done anyway. This is a major goof for the Honda company and a lot of work to replace the camshaft. I don't feel confident I won't have other issues related to the repair such as oil leaks later on. I probably would have a used a torque wrench when reassembling. That said, there doesn't seem to be much tool clearance around some of the fasteners for ordinary torque wrenches.

      I had the recall done. Now it's back in for more work. Unit kept shutting off when engaging the blades when warmed up. Tech took it a part and found an oil leak in the crankseal. Apparantly a common problem after the recall fix.

      @@chris36771 if the repair was done the way this guy does it then it is no wonder. Hondabond silicone must set up before adding oil. Or the seal will be compromised

      @@duanesliftedtrucks I don't tolerate anyone who puts 3D plastic gears inside lawnmower engines, not even on the Honda brand

    If you turn the crank, you can get a 1/4" torque wrench in there real easy. Torque is 9ftlbs.
