Things You'll Never Do Shopping Online
February 28th, 2024
Andres Fajardo- drums - casually reading a discount sheet while throwing down a twisted beat
Christian Pineda- bass - being convinced to get over the metal guitarist's mindset of burying the bass in the mix
Christopher Safos- guitar, trying to pass off a strap mishap as a deliberate finish
Right around the time we found out that just over half the Sam Ash stores in the US would begin liquidating inventory before closing doors near the end of Spring. (The others had closed by Summer, though the onljne side has stuck around )
I've said this in more conversations and various rants than I can recall, but the impromptu jam in this video is the kind of thing that I may never experience again in this lifetime in a store, and most certainly never could sitting and clicking on some item while shopping online.

Did you have to ground it somehow, or is it fine (not noisy) simply installed?
20/20 hindsight- the jack does not appear to be equipped with a ground wire, so if I had to do it again I'd probably solder one to the base plate of those PowerPins- Technically I still could, but that's currently a bit more than my skill set and tools will allow, so I'd have to go to a pro. Not super-noisy but a proper ground can't hurt
I confirm. I have never done this while online shopping. More of this please!
@ohdippity whenever possible!
That's really cool.
The kit was from Reid & Sons - the original pups were a little hissy and underpowered, and the pole pieces did not quite align properly under the strings, so the doubled strings didn't track as well - The Alumitones are built more bar or rail-like and track more fully, cleanly, and with surprising power- not super hot but they feel pretty good - I need to get into it soon to check for grounding issues - I didn't shield the cavities, and there seems to be spotty connection at times
Great collection you have there. Interesting seeing all of the pickup selections as well. I have LR Baggs Anthem SL in a J45. I just bought a Fishman Neo D Humbucker and put it in an old Takamine. I was impressed with the sound. I like your classical guitars too. I've owned a few Cordobas over the years. I bought a C12 about a year ago. Happy playing
@@joshfeatherstone8546 great thing about the Cordobas is having truss rods in the neck... too are a thing in classical guitars...
@joshfeatherstone8546 their thinbody Stage pieces have gorgeous tone plugged in - comparable to Godin Multiac or better (at least to my ears)

Hello do the pickup need electric guitar strings to work? (To pickup the guitar sound)
@@coupe662 Not absolutely necessary though I prefer it because of the flat wounds- Maybe nickel has a bit more of a magnetic pull than bronze for a magnetic pickup (though quieter acoustically) That could be relevant - Bronze wound would resonate more acoustically but may need more of a volume boost and raise the noise floor (more "hiss") if you're recording It's not a super quiet pickup but perfect if you're going for that little bit of grit
@@csafos thanks for taking the time to answer, nice video! Have a good one💪💫

why are the strings not removed or at least loosened first?
Check the thread - impatience and didn't want to shop for another set of flat wounds
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Thanks! There were a lot of steps that I wrote about both in the notes and some of the comments that were not in the video even the original cut of the video which was 17 minutes long didn’t include a lot of critical steps that are meant for efficiency and preservation of the finish. I do highly recommend the step drill bit though because running a straight half inch reamer bit through the base of the guitar could definitely do some damage to the finish at least if not the actual Block inside the guitar.
Hey why didn't you remove the strings? Curious. I'm about to do this
Mostly Because I was impatient and wanted an additional obstacle to amuse/frustrate myself with. That and flat wounds are overpriced - didn’t have another set to swap them out - I find that that putting the same strings back in is even more of a pain and prone to early breakage
@@csafos thanks bud. I went ahead and removed the strings. I needed to restring it anyways with lighter ones. But your notes were very helpful!
That combination
Sounds amazing.
👍 Nice man keep up the good work I enjoyed that
Thanks! I’ll keep at it!
I haven’t picked up an S-310 recently But I have absolutely no regrets about this setup, which I e also dropped into a 12-string kit build that originally had the three single coils setup - mind you this demo was played through a 3-watt amp powered by AA batteries at minimal volume - I’d say go for itt!
I have been thinking a lot of Lace configs for my Epiphone S-310 Custom. Was thinking Golds, and that is awesome... Bul the thought of the Alumitones has been reaaaaally circling my mind for the longest... Same config, Yay or Nay, for a Do-It-All?

Hi from England, just bought one of these pickups, but it wasn't much of a demo. Have to look elsewhere.
Hi, are you asking about a demo of the audio or about the installation itself?
@@csafos the installation itself.
@@bessiebraveheart apologies for the fast forwards - the original video was over 17 minutes I didn’t think too many people would sit through the whole thing but I can walk you through some areas if you like- Some preliminary steps that i skipped - 1. taping around the drilling area with masking/gaffer tape- this will help avoid chilling/flaking of the finish if that’s a concern. 2. The step drill bit is important- if you push a straight 1/2”(13mm) bit through the strap pinhole as is you could potentially damage the surrounding area - go in gently with the step bit first - if the step bit is metric I’m not sure if 13mm is the last gauge-so check your numbers 3. There are two pinholes at the top of the endpin Jack that will allow you to pass through a thin wire (a high e string may do in a pinch) (around the 5:44 mark I pulled a thin wire through the endpin hole with enough length to reach out of the sound hole- passed the end through the pinholes and tied it off so I could pull it back out through the endpin- the back end nuts threaded on the output are to be adjusted so just enough of the jack pops through so you can screw on the strap pin that holds the Jack in place- maybe 7mm? (I eyeballed that measurement so my numbers may not be exact) -
"Promosm" 😔
Thanks but I’ll pass
Beautiful keep playing 🎸
Thank you!!! I will! P.S. Keep listening!
Hi there! Nice informative video. I've bought an acoustic with the same Gretsch pickup installed. There's a bit of noise - because it's not grounded. But would you ground this? Replace the plastic saddle with a saddle made of metal or? Thanks in advance. Please continue making videos please.
I don’t think a metal saddle would help since it’s not connecting in any way to the pickup - something along the inside of the Jack maybe I also noticed some noise when the cable wasn’t fully slotted in- maybe check to see if the cable is fully snapped in
@@csafos Great feedback. But if I placed the ground cable underneath the saddle.. Well I'll try your suggestion anyway :)
@@thefuzz4447 Before you do I’d check the output Jack. Twist off the strap pin piece and check to see if the 1/2” nut is fully tightened
So much waving around of the guitar and such a strange way to install without taking time to at least loosen strings and move them aside so that a steadier view can be seen of the process. The stage of installation at 5.13+ isn't even filmed - the pup just appears in place in what seems to be a speeded-up section.
Thank you for your thoughts Verse Shed- it’s true that the more appropriate way to mount the pickup to the sound hole would have been to loosen or remove the strings altogether- The original length of the combined clips that made up this video was over 17 minutes- I had to assume that most people with an interest in doing the installation would fast forward through some of the process - The more challenging part of the process is the drilling and running of the output Jack out through the cavity. Ideally one would also place gaffing tape over the area surrounding the drill hole to prevent chipping of the finish- however, since the finish of this guitar may be it’s least appealing aspect, I wasn’t overly concerned
Soothing as fuck

If you like the sound of this or any of the other videos, let me know if you have something in mind for a remix using your slow-motion shots
Er, have you ever tried taking the strings off...?
Hi Cody- I have indeed on several others with a lot more room for hand movement in the cavity. But I got a kick out of contorting my hand just to see if I could
Beautiful Lou Reed vibes but also Leonard Cohen!
WOW I’ll take that!
Nice !
@dave barras thank you!
To be more precise, the KNA pickups are not “under-saddle” They’re tied off on the bridge BEHIND the saddle A home guide to installing acoustic soundhole pickups- as shown with the Gretsch Deltoluxe single-coil passive pickup. The instruments shown in the first 2:30 feature heavily in my other videos- you can skip to the installation guide portion if yon go to the 3:45 mark up to approximately 7:00 Remaining 4+ minutes is testing through a Vox Mini 3 and a 6-channel Yamaha mixer (contrasting mic vs pickup and blends)
What to do when your open G string is buzzing and there’s no fret buzz anywhere else? Sand the 1st fret? Tweak the truss rod? Or just drop relentless hammer-ons at G# until the buzzing goes away? Does that happen?
